If you have a list of possible urls is there a program to check them? I was thinking the next url will be a star name which is misspelled like rasalhague and oreo.

I'm a Mac user so I just paste the text into the Pages app which recognises URLS and accesses them through Safari.

#1. Click on a link in Pages
#2. Get the 404 page on 8𠖥1.info
#3. Close window
#4. Goto 1

Something similar must possible under Windows?

let me help you out

# wget -i links.txt

unfortunately they dont use a proper 404 http-code on the error-page, so you have to filter them out by their filesize...

that are the only "valid" links from the pastebin.

Cocotel said on page 57 that those types of programs only retrieve pages that are somehow connected to the main page. We are most likely looking for a completely independent page.

I know it would be easy to find a list of the names of bright stars and write a program to generate a list of those names with the letters rearanged. Is there a way to test the list without testing each link manually? Is there a way to make a program that will

enter a url into a browser
check the file size
If large enough print url to text file
repeat

My single semester of C++ did not prepare me for this type of thing. Is this impossible?

read again and the context i quotetd on

i took the "possible link variations" of the pastebin and downloaded them all, sorting out the 404 pages so you dont have to check them all manually like 18001 tried to do

Trying with this list without variations. Looking for .mp3, .png, .pdf and .html files. I built the list from Wikipedia: List of proper names of stars

again, let me walk you throu the process, so more people can do this on their own maybe or replicate the results if they want

Code:
# sed 's/^\(.*\)$/\1.html\n\1.png\n\1.jpg\n\1.pdf\n\1.mp3/g' stars.txt | sed 's#\(.*\)$#http://8-3-11.info/\1#g' > stars-variations.txt

# wget -nv -i stars-variations.txt
Downloaded: 1900 files, 1.6M

# find . -type f ! -size 842c

it's even worse than i expected it to be:

Altair.png .. that's it

And hope they didn't misspell anything.

It sucks because star names are not consistant. Different spellings from different countries I see Alphecca and Alphekka are both considered correct

sed black magic Smile I only got Altair.png, too Sad

I think this approach isn't very productive...

quick add to it: if anyone still wants to go for the bruteforce method in finding unlinked files, dont waste your time on case sensitivity.

as this is hosted on an IIS7, which runs on a microsoft os and pretty much has ntfs underneath, it doesnt differ between.. lets say TheOutlet.html (as referenced in their links) and theoutlet.html or view7progressstc.png

on a second note, i found that the index-page was modified on Mon, 18 Jul 2011 20:47:54 GMT

has anyone noticed any changes?

all the other sites are pretty much dated June 23rd, with exception of GetInvolved (July 11th), TheOutlet (July 10th), ImagesOfBelle (July 14th)

Thank you for your help snicker. Do you guys think the eye jay thing is a problem like some letters will be spelled out? That adds a whole lot of problems.

i took a close look at the source of the index page and noticed that the embedded music has a "bgcolor" tag as this color: http://www.colorcombos.com/FF9900-hex-color

Why use bgcolor on an embedded mp3?

double checked, bgcolor isn't even a valid attribute for the embed tag, that's definitely intentional
ff9900 is orange and also:
16750848 in decimal
111111111001100100000000 in binary (which doesn't produce anything useful if parsed as ascii)

I actually downloaded the site at 12:37 -8GMT or 20:37 GMT

Date on index.html is June 9

File comparison = 0 bytes different!!

I don't know wheter bgcolor is fully compliant with HTML specification but it might be an optional attribute for some vendors: QuickTime: Embed Tag Attributes.

i don't think that the html source itself will give uns that many hints.

it rather looks like the one in charge of editing/composing the pages doesn't do it very often or simply has a lack of knowledge of basic html/webdesign.

all the nested <small>, <big> tags, linebreaks with style-attributes to space things, the method to hide the "secret messages" with the font-color of the background instead of using a html-comment or such, would support that theory

looks like the output of a WYSIWYG-editor after playing with some attributes to me
