What if The Operator was real? [OOG]
We say TINAG but we don't actually act that way...

I apologize right now for the wall of text. I did try to cut it down a little.
My significant other and I were discussing Marble Hornets the other day, specifically what would happen and how people would react if it was real. We always say This Is Not A Game but we don't treat it exactly like that. We do know it is a game and we act accordingly, pretending we think it is real. Obviously this is the only way the game can actually function and if we were true to TINAG we would quickly derail the games with police investigations and such. But I think with MH, the consequences would be much more fascinating.

The Operator exists and our friend Jay is really being stalked by a supernatural entity that is kidnapping and possibly killing people. What would happen? Jay is posting his investigations online. My supposition is that a paranormal investigating group would start investigating. Perhaps a well meaning online friend would contact a mental health facility about Jay with his hallucinations and memory loss - he's possibly a danger to himself, maybe even others. And the police should probably be contacted about the video from Entry (the one with all the blood in the tunnel, forgive me I can't remember).

So now we have paranormal investigators, tourists looking for a creepy good time and police all roaming around Rosswood Park. Assuming The Operator doesn't just flee the area (strength in numbers?) some of them disappear and others, probably a fair number, start coughing blood. THAAAAT'S not good...

The police are investigating multiple disappearances, walking lines through the woods. Journalists pick up the story (Speculations: crazy serial killers! chemical warfare! industrial waste! bears! aliens!) resulting in their equipment malfunctioning, and yet more people coming down sick and/or disappearing. The CDC hears of all the slendysickness and gets involved - it could be an epidemic! More people get sick and disappear. The FBI is probably interested by now. Shots are probably fired from time to time in the forest.

At some point people see and catch on camera teleporting (yes I know not everyone thinks that is happening in game, but bear with me for this)...guess who would be WAY interested in having this ability? Under the guise of supporting the CDC and FBI, the military shows up. They make sure that some of their soldiers get infected, so they can study it as well, and just in case the sickness allows the ability to teleport. They cordon off the whole park in the interest of public safety and people in bunny suits roam the woods with strange testing devices. As people keep disappearing and no conventional science has answers, the decision is made to level the park for public safety.

The Operator? Does he still exist at this point? Does he get shot, discovered, killed? Would destroying the forest destroy him, or would it set him free to roam more?

Very interesting idea.

As for the effect of destroying the park: I don't know what effect it would have on Slendy. I don't think that it would destroy him, but I do think he has a connection to the area. That said, I don't think he's BOUND to the area. Presumably, the area in which the Marble Hornets Pretentious Student Film was shot is not near Rosswood Park, and we don't actually know where Alex grew up to begin with (since it's possible he and the Operator go way back).

So I don't think it'll do anything--except maybe piss him off.

The tapes and hard drive would be taken in to custody of the police department and possibly the government.

TiMasky and even possibly Hoody would be on the FBI's Most Wanted List due to their connections found in the tapes and from testimonies from both Jay and Alex. (Well, until we figure out where Hoody fits in, he/she would just be brought in for questioning).

Brian's house would be quarantined and investigated, especially the room where the teleportation happened. They would also hunt for the location of the building that Jay gets teleported to and that Alex and Seth investigated.

To stop the possibly spread of the Operator, the (X) symbol would either be a warning symbol of sightings or it would be forbidden/discouraged/illegal to draw.

All these assuming people let the series continue before someone realized they should report it.

Oh and...

Oooh, forgot a couple.

Alex is arrested for assault, possibly attempted murder, for attacking Tim/Masky. He counter sues Tim for harassment, for running around in a mask scaring people.

Re: police involvement

A lot of this would depend on how seriously the police looked into the footage which was found online, likely bringing in videography experts to analyze the footage. How seriously does the police take that? Well it depends on the municipality and the jurisdiction. The FBI took NIN's "Down In It" video pretty damned seriously since they thought (initially) it featured an actual murder. But...some random suburban, exurban place in Alabama? Well...maybe not so much.

Particularly if the authorities find out about a small online subculture interested in faking videos featuring a curious, faceless guy. I actually don't know whether MH presumes the presence of the SA origin or not. Let's say for now, it doesn't.

I think all the authorities would really be able to do is say, "well this video was shot, but edited by a third party, and there are several distortions and damage to the video data. Hard to tell." Which brings it down to legwork on the part of the cops. While it might be difficult to track down Jay and Alex individually at this point, they can go investigate their families. This would be able to bring in a lot more information about Alex and Jay's pasts that the game has not dwelled on before. Has Alex had a history of violence or psych observation? Does Jay? Where would they go if threatened? Who are their friends, where do they live? Have you spoken to your children recently? Do you have their address, phone number?

The story can get a lot more complex if you take it from a police procedural perspective. And, it could end up much the same way as Jay/Alex. Two cops on the missing persons beat who draw attention from a certain tall dappler fellow. Particularly if one of those cops is an old veteran who has seen this pattern before...

As long as it's not slash....that'd be.....terrifying.

(Further off topic - I posted this in the Admin forum, no responses yet, but I can't seem to update my sig. Anyone else have this problem. I have tried many times. I save it and...it stays the way you see below.)

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
If you're adding things to it, it could be too long, thus it doesn't update it.

You know, from the real life perspective, the entry of law enforcement on this is probably either: a) Amy's disappearance, or b) the arson on Jay's apartment.

While Jay and Alex seem to have no particular close relatives or parents or anyone else who gives a crap about them, you'd be hard pressed to convince me that the disappearance of a young, attractive (white, blonde) girl wouldn't show up on someone's radar. While no one might believe her roommate that something odd was going on (due to her drinking problem), her parents or other family would probably be trying to get some answers pounded out.

Investigating the arson might not get too far, unless there were some tell-tale pieces of evidence to connect the perpetrator to the MH production. Hard to say what that would be (eyewitnesses seeing a guy in a mask, security footage, analysis of the method of the arson), but it's not impossible. This wouldn't really bring the real life consquences close to encountering the Operator - but it would get people looking for Jay and possibly Alex or Tim and Brian.

Oh. How could I forget this? Where the hell is Seth? Being disappeared for more than three years? Yeah...there'd be a cop somewhere who'd have looked into the production. Maybe he didn't get too far, but there'd at least be a file open.

It spreads like a disease. A single film student, caught up in events that he didn't understand that brought North America to its knees.

It started with the film student. When he disappeared, due to unknown circumstances, his friend began investigating. Through what may have been fate, or even random chance, many began working against him. Everything became so much that he lost himself for so long, only to be thrust back into investigation of the unknown.

Many followed the friends investigation, leading to a full-scale manhunt, if you can even call it that, of the infamous Rosswood Park. Police forces, paranormal investegators, thrill-seekers and even the unknowing civilian entered the park and never returned.

From the forest, to the towns, to the cities, to the country, to the continent, to the ark. It spread like a disease. Men, women and children losing their minds to a force unknown. Promises of escape to an ark, like Noah to the animals.

No help ever came. The continent of North America was lost to the mysterious force. It is unknown if what has taken one of the largest populations of the world will continue spreading, but what is certain, is that the mysterious force is still out there. Waiting. Watching. Searching for its next victim, to begin the cycle again. Where it came from is still unknown, but we know where it is and that the world is still under threat from the tall stranger. The mysterious watcher. The operator of death. The Slender Man.

The beginning of the fanficition starts with our Narrator, Jay, one day finding the fateful tapes that would in time dissolve the sanity of Americans all across the continent.

Surely the cops would quarantine Rosswood Park before anyone else was harmed? Though the park is big. And the Operator has been seen outside of the park, obviously. Damn, this is like an unbeatable weapon. If we could find a way to harness the power of Slender Man/the Operator, we would have created a new weapon on the frontier of psychological warfare.
