I can tell you that the binary can't be decoded directly. It was a bunch of nonsense. It was made solely of the characters: #"$&%'!B@?A>= plus the character U+0014 which predictably repeated every three characters. EDIT: actually, sometimes there is actually a space and no second character between the two DC4s This character is apparently 'DEVICE CONTROL 4' and is used when computers need to tell a device to stop doing something:
Quote:
A device control character which is primarily intended for turning off, stopping or interrupting an ancillary device. If it is not required for this purpose, it may be used for any other device control function not provided by other DCs.
Perhaps there is some meaning in the fact that it's segmented like this?

I figured that, since it repeats so predictably, that character has some sort of significance and that a description of what it's used for might be of some use to us. It was my best lead at the time.

I wonder if there's any significance that we can see other folders in the site.... although, they're 403ed on us...

EDIT: I wonder why the file is named "voicesfromfuture" should have some significance, too

Wait! Pause! It's a pause! Like in a transmission! Those symbols must each represent a number or something. They're grouped in twos, so it must be something like dec / char or hex. We just have to figure out which character represents each number. The groups that are just a space would be the end of a word.

EDIT: Oh, wait. There are a few groups of " A" A line break maybe?
EDIT2: Nuts, there are also "% " and " %" maybe spaces represent a number, too? or maybe my theory is just a good (but incorrect) guess...

I just ran a google search, and scimitar is actually a kinds of sword they used in the old times and is usually known to be used by arabs/muslim.

Now, going back to the list of directories on the L6 of the sfs, there's s directory named "swordfiles" maybe that has some significance now?

EDIT: also, scimitar is also a stealth ship in starwars... lol, I guess now things are makes more sense

EDIT2: it also has some info about another ship in startrek about a ship (that can cloak) used to overthrow someone... hmmmmmmm, now it seems the use of this word has much deeper use then?

Ok, I need to go. I likely won't be back until tomorrow. I emailed my theory about the code to Dan in case that will get you guys a hint.

Decoded it! You need to decode it thrice *hint*

Edit--Use your knowledge of what each kind of base language should look like.

Edit2--I should share the message, at least. Here it is (I emailed it to Dan already):

Quote:
The voices tell me they are coming. I don't know what they mean. They say they will come. They say we should probably prepare. I don't know what they mean! Am I th only one who can hear them? I'm not crazy. I know they can hear me. I can hear them. They studied me. Now they understand. I think the everyone should know. Everything was a lie. I should have never made this. This whole thing should have never happened. The future could have been different.

Got it!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I decoded the binary, then put the Dec / char result into the hex field which produced plain text that looked suspiciously like more hex. it decoded to:

Not sure what to think.

EDIT: Ok, I'll remember that quotes in spoilers don't work.
EDIT2: Emailed Dan again. I'll go offline for real after I get his typically fast reply and post it.
EDIT3: Whoops, didn't see Punxtr's edit. I guess Dan just got emailed the same thing twice.

Edit--No problem duke, I beat you by a full 10 minutes! Not like it matters... solving puzzles make you feel great!

Dan's response:

Quote:
I. am. just. speechless about this. Creepy indeed. But I think I do have something that might help about this.

In early prototypes of the Whispher project, test subjects (and just for the sake of getting things to progress in this problem we're facing, our test subjects were actual live humans) experienced a slight passive reaction to the Whispher project. And that is the ability to have a persistent connection to whoever they communicated to, using the Whispher project. But, it only lasts a couple of hours, until in later developments that after-effect lasted down to mere minutes until further down the research we were able to eliminate this after-effect.

Genus has invested heavily on this project and is the lead scientist for this, as I may have already mentioned. He was able to solve the problem and remove the after-effect. However, in the early days of the project he seemed to have experienced this after-effect himself when he intentionally used the project onto himself. From that day, he experiences these so called "voices" which only he hears. We assumed he might have just gone crazy so we had him checked and he was fine. After the checkup, the after-effect was gone so we didn't bother with it. We then also required him to NOT use the project on himself again. That's also when we tried to start testing it on live humans, since Genus didn't die from it, and he just had that after-effect. From there, the project had it's development sped up and Genus was able to fine tune it.

It was indeed his biggest achievement. I'll try to see if we have a timestamp on when this file was made and deleted. This might have just been a file when he had the after-effect years ago.

I'll update you when I have more files to be checked.

New Scimitar email. Has someone been chatting with him?
Quote:
Good morning! Or good afternoon, wherever you are. Or maybe good evening? Whatever it maybe, I just though I'd drop by and say hello to Mr Miller's "experts".

It's been great having some sort of communication with you. Oh, and it is indeed great to see that someone is showing some interest in what I know. I won't tell who that is. It won't be fun anymore if I tell you who that was.

Yes, you can call me scimitar or whatever you like. I don't mind. It won't make any significance if you figured out my email was hex for that word. Seriously now, make this show worth watching Smile

Sure, I'll fess up. Very Happy I haven't rebooted LAINSY, and I won't do it unless there's a majority here who can agree on that decision, but I want to make sure that this new character has a chance to "play" before we all start ignoring him and feeding him to Miller. I had sent him this email:
Quote:
Hello Scimitar (or what do you want to be called?)

I don't know if my fellow colleagues have reached out to you yet, but
let's just say you have piqued my interest.

I'm not convinced enough to go against my co-workers' wishes and
reboot LAINSY on my own, but I can see that you have special
information that can't be obtained by going through the "conventional"
(i.e., corporate) means of conversing with Mr. Miller and waiting on
his reports from his own team of programmers as they investigate the
incident at the Antarctica Facility. From what you're saying, by the
time they do find something important, it will be too late.

So because I think your information is important and time is of the
essence, I'm willing to play along. But I can't go rogue against my
fellow mates without a damn good reason. I may, however, be able to
convince them to hear you out. So if you have something to say, I'm
listening.

Just wanted to let you know.

He's replied with the following:
Quote:
I think you already know what I want to happen, and I don't have to say it again. Maybe if you can convince me, I might have something special for you.

So what can I say? I'm curious, so I sent him a (hopefully) convincing reply. I don't think we're going to get very far unless we consider all our options here. Will keep you in the loop on how this plays out.

That was actually a really nice move! I think if you dance around this guy enough we might be able to yank a little information out of him. Very Happy

I'm not too sure what he wants you to "convince" him of, per se. Maybe that you've really splintered from the group? If you played that up too much he might get suspicious, though. Would you be able to post your reply as well?

Also heads up a new email from Dan Miller:
Quote:
My technicians were able to extract the timestamp on the file we worked on yesterday. It was dated June 7 2011 when it was created and dated June 9 2011 when it was deleted. Seems very significant since the date the code of the facility's systems were modified on June 9. Also, my technicians encountered a file with a string of letters that seem similar to one you have already worked on. I have posted the file at the same location on the secure file storage for you to work on. None of the people I have here on the facility knows how to decode it.

Good luck and keep me posted! I'll keep you posted on our progress here.

There's a new file posted at Dan's file storage (url: http://failtechnologies.com/sfs/L6/millerfiles/experts/remember.txt)

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Enigma code settings are:
III V I
VZQ
AAA (ignore, or start of message)
Plugs: EH IW PS (the letters, minus the R, of WHISPHER)
coded message: OGZQIMFDXLWXLSDLHKZJLDVALFRMQGQDIVSHZIVHERUDSUZJURXWQLLMJBJXLERXMLWGKYZEWQEKOCGZI

decoded to:
TRUST NOBODY AND WILL WIN TRUST YOURSELF ALONE AND DO WHAT YOU NEED TO WE SHALL WIN WE WILL END IT ALL

Have you already emailed that decoded string to Dan? If not, I will.
Also, I second that you should post the message you sent to Scimitar.
