I agree that it is impossible to truly stop the spread of the pirated version, but I believe WE can help supress it. All of us can refuse to download it or have any association with it. If fact, I think we should all concentrate on finding the perps and notifying Microsoft and/or Bungie.

We can notify Microsoft/Bungie AFTER ROBOGriff has had a few hours with them with a blowtorch and pliers. It's time to get MidEvil

Shockingly excessive force?

irony, no?

Speaking as someone with legal experience, a $10,000 fine does not constitute "shockingly excessive force."

That depends on if they are pirating this work for profit or not. If this is a bunch of 13 yr olds in their mom's basement, then $10k would be pretty steep. Or at least prevent them from going to college for 1 year.

I wasn't referring to how the defendants might view the amount of the fine.

What if we compared the fine to that by RIAA for illegal music downloading?

10,000 does seem like just a slap on the wrist to me, even if they are 13 yr old kids.

Email the location to piracySPLATmicrosoft.com

And there's a phone number too, although I don't know it. Check that link I posted to eurogamer, it's there.

I find it unfortunate that we even have the need for this discussion. As a software developer, I know what pirating can do to a business. And most of the pirating comes from people that are too cheap to purchase something they obviously find value in. Now I will say I am not the most clean person here. I used to d/l music just so I can say I was first with it. But I would still support the artists by seeing their concerts or whatever. Software is kind of an all or nothing thing. Either you like the product and pay for it or not.

For those who are extremely cheap and are considering d/l'int the game, I say visit techbargains.com and cheapassgamer.com

Those sites had killer deals on games. At one time Halo 2 LE was only $35! Not saying anyone reading this is considering d/l'ing it.

This is a very unpleasant turn of events.

unfortunately with the nature of piracy on the internet, cutting off the source won't stem the flow. Its out there now and nothing can be done.

Very true, but if someone is made an example of (the source of the leak, for instance) it might make others weary of d/l'ing something that could get them similarly punished.

Which reminds me. Someone has to have some cajones gigantes to pull something like this against Microsoft. I could see Doom3, since id hasn't had the most clout, money, or power of late... but M$ could literally buy, sell, and re-buy you, make a profit off of you, and then sell you to the lowest bidder just for kicks and giggles. I mean, a company that has no problem whatsoever LOSING money on every console they ship could rip your wallet, my wallet, and Donald Trump's wallet a new one easily.

Why would anyone do this? Let's weigh the pros and cons: Save $49.99 + tax, versus Get fined $10k, be shamed in public as a priate, and possibly have a black helicopter descend on your mom's house in the middle of the night to abduct you from her basement to make you the latest in a string of missing teens.

I'm gonna go with "Wait for Nov. 9th".

As someone mentioned earlier on, I also am pretty sure I read 100k in fines is the maximum possible sentence, not 10k.

I hope it really is 100k too, Bungie deserves more respect than this.
