To be fair, he was still in college at that point (I think). It might have been the only time of day he was able to go to the house without ditching class.

 		I'm pretty sure J had already graduated by the time he started watching the tapes in Season 1 (his age suggests it, anyway, and he would have had to be in school for a long time to still be there 3 years after Alex was when they're supposed to be the same age). He might have had a full-time job back then, though.

Well he also went back during the day time, and judging from how the entry went and how he went from place-to-place by just going through a door and how much he got slenderfucked, I'd say it wouldn't matter how time of day you went and how many people you brought with you.


I think the best course of action would've been to not go at all.

Didn't Jay say he lost it? Seems to me they decided to just forget about the casing since they have so much more crap to go off of

I'd wager it was either a deliberate red herring, or they weren't entirely sure which direction they wanted to go, so they put that in there to cover their bases should they decide to go that route later. I doubt there was a deliberate plan for it that they later scrapped.
