[SPEC]

more spec and most likely wrong.

maybe we need to know this code for some part of Halo2 in game play.
if you play Doom 3 there is a point where you need to go to a real world website to get a code to be able to open emails on an in game pda.

So maybe just maybe the code will be used in game and which needs to be decoded to say open a locked door.

slap me silly if you think i am talking rubbish

My quote from the other thread:

Quote:
A side note: according to the books, the Covenant written language is a "baroque" version of Forerunner, with lots of extra flourishes and ornate decorations on an otherwise simple alphabet. This language looks nothing like that, so I'm thinking that it's straight Forerunner.

Of course, the message was [META] from Bungie, not some sort of "Your destruction is the will of the gods, and we are their messenger" kind of thing, so I'm not anticipating any interesting plot-related activities going on with the alphabet before release.

If this *does* end up being the Covvie alphabet, I'll be sad. They've done a good job until this point of keeping everything in sync with some unseen canon ("the Halo Bible"), but this would be a pretty nasty little departure. Not that people other than Phaedra and myself really care about that sort of thing (side note: I live in Austin, and a while back I saw a car with a picture of two trees, one silver and one gold, painted on the back, and two names in written in the Tengwar alphabet...I love my town!), but Bungie had been doing really well at pleasing geeks like us up until now...

And to answer someone's earlier question as to how the code was decipher: simple substitution codes just require a few good guesses to solve. I imagine most people looked at the last word and said, "huh, there are two of the same letter in there, wouldn't it be funny if it said 'bees'? Maybe the bottom line says 'I Love Bees'? Well, the first word on the bottom line can't be 'I', it's got two letters...and if the third word is 'bees', then the second letter in the first word is 'e', so maybe it's 'we'"...etc. etc. Once you've got a lot of letters, it becomes like Wheel of Fortune, filling in the blanks.

The Covanent are "rumoured" to be extremely vain - which would suggest ornate and "cocky" writing styles.

However - is it possible that they would consider themselves humble before the language of their "gods".

I mean, if God wrote, would we all copy Him and try to make our language look better? Sounds like hubris, or blasphemy to me...

Just a side note Smile

Forerunner symbols...

By the way, just to offset any arguments that this is a Forerunner language, here is a page displaying the Forerunner symbols seen on Halo:

http://halosm.bungie.org/story/forerunner/jsymbols.html

These symbols (which are also found on certain Covenant equipment) are largely circular or curved.

It is possible that this is a separate Forerunner character set, but I get the feeling it's not.

I Love Bees was how I solved it. I think the four of us solved it almost simultaniously. Along with all the people on the chatter channel.

True, and any sort of improvements on Forerunner tech are viewed as heresy (see First Strike, when a Covenant AI catches Cortana improving on their slipstream jump algorithms). However, I also recall reading in First Strike the fact that I mentioned earlier, about the Covenant alphabet being an ornate version of Forerunner. Unfortunately I do not have the book with me, as to give the exact quote. Perhaps I misread, but I'm fairly certain I did not.

The phrase "all your base are belong to us" just sounded familiar to me, so I googled it. I found an interesting flash animation from what looks like an old nintendo game... has anyone ever played this game before? Could there be a connection?

Sorry if this is old news.

If this is old news please feel free to punish me.

The Halo2 site is already up for the Aussies.

I didn't notice any more code but maybe I didn't look hard enough.

I'm sorry, maybe I missed something.

Images? What? Are there hidden images or something on the halo 2 site? Has anything been done with these ciphers aside from learning that these letters make up "All Your Base Are Belong To Us" and "I Love Bees"?
