ARG vs. VMC

An Alternate Reality Game, as I know it, involves fictional characters, made up for use only in the ARG, used to tell a story that you otherwise wouldn't know from simply watching the movie. Cloverfield, for instance, has entirely no plot that actually involves the monster unless you followed it's ARG.

A Viral Marketing Campaign is just a series of hidden Trailers and pictures used to slowly "leak" information about the events of the movie before it comes out. Again, as I understand it.

I think this qualifies as an ARG, as Darren will almost certainly not be a character in the upcoming movie... or, at least, I hope not, cause that guy on the commercial is a terrible actor. As in Cloverfield, they may make allusions to Darren, or at least his services, but without following this campaign, it may not be possible, or at least obvious, to figure out how they got the footage that makes up the film.
I see your point though, it does fit both descriptions really. Of course, there's always a lot of overlap.
But, ultimately, does it really matter? They're played in the same way, or at least in a similar manner... and, in the end, it's just easier to say "ARG" than it is to type out "Viral Marketing"... and, as far as I know (even though I used it in the subject), "VMC" isn't a widely accepted abbreviation. Abbreviations are only as useful as the number of people who recognize them.
Dude, I just invented the First Law of Internet Abbreviation. lol

Or is he SO GOOD he fooled you into thinking that? It was supposed to be a crappy "local commercial".

Anyway, and ARG is supposed to contain the "G", Viral doesn't. These 1's and I's are suspicious, but they don't seem to be going anywhere with them.

Lol, good point. He did do "bad" extremely well...

Yeah, I see what you mean. Right now though, this doesn't qualify as anything except a waste of time. ARG or VMC, it's gotta go somewhere eventually.
But, I still defend it's position as a full fledged ARG, as it has many of the classic elements thereof: The TINAG aesthetic, communication between players and characters in the game, use of real, working emails... the only thing it's really missing so far is the player interaction, and that's just because they either aren't releasing any new information, or we just cant get past round one...

A new approach
Timelines, numbers, video backgrounds

Checked back to see what we missed, with a new approach...

I used GSpot http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ to view the information so anyone is free to look.

in code: July 21st
(Also PA3 trailer debut)

I searched the date and come across:
1911, birthday of Media messenger Marshall McLuhan encodes pop culture with the legendary aphorism "the medium is the message"

I look back at the cards. 110%, which became 111% on the site. We know it's significant.

I go back to Darren's Commercial images:
These have July 21 and the #11 in common
SPACE - SHUTTLE= 2011, End of last space shuttle mission. Atlantis landed for the final time at NASA's Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral after 200 orbits around Earth.

MOON LANDING= 1969, From Apollo 11 Armstrong and Aldrin landed in the Sea of Tranquility and became the first humans to walk on the Moon.

ATOMIC BOMB= 1945, President Truman orders atomic bombs to be used in World War II (reaching a bit).

SAN-DIEGO BAY/HARBOR= 1905, Boiler explosion of naval ship Bennington, Navy's worst peacetime disasters. Preparations to sail reached completion by 10:38 a.m., and only the absence of Commander Lucien Young, the captain, delayed the departure. After coaling the ship that morning, most of the crew were below decks cleaning themselves. Without warning, two explosions of superheated steam erupted. Many were trapped in the various compartments and perished, while others succumbed to injuries. 11 of the survivors were awarded the Medal of Honor for extraordinary heroism for those rescued. Young re-boarded the ship shortly after 11:00. Speculation was that Young was at a saloon he frequented, and was seen running from the bar back to the water-front.
    or
SAN DIEGO CONVENTION CENTER= 2011, where Comic Con was held, Darren's Timeless Memories cards passed out launching Paranormal Activity III ARG with cards.

    Last Image: ?
GEORGE WASHINGTON PRESCOTT= 1939, Died Fort Worth.
GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73)= 1990, christened by then-first lady Barbara Bush on the nuclear-powered super carrier launch.
    RUSHMORE ?
    ?

At this point I'd try anything, I just can't make heads or tails of it. Maybe this will get some wheels turning though.

I noticed the date stamp on the video clips from the trailer goes from Sept 3 to 24. 21 days. The movie's release date is Oct 21.

In Paranormal Activity 1 it takes 21 days until the Demon takes over Katie and kills Micah (according to the dates on Micah's camera)

C'mon, really? Those aren't even all words, one of them is just a letter.
IF this is an anagram for something, it would be something that is obviously what they were going for, and that obviously ties in with the story, and is actually grammatically correct.

Try, try again
questions and answers

Well at least it's something - Dumb as it may be. I assume slang is OK when using a Ouija board.

Nobody seems to be coming up with anything. You have the answer?

No, I don't, and I'm starting to think that there isn't one.
If it's a cipher, we need a key. If its an anagram, there are over a hundred possible combinations, none of which create any coherent word or phrase. I tried translating it, maybe it's in a different language. Nothing. It's not a website. Typing it into Google just yields references to "Sad Keanu".
I'm pretty sure, at least by itself, Samkeonu doesn't mean a thing.

And, yes, slang is ok for a Ouija board, but not abbreviations and half-words and leet speak. And not complete grammatical incorrectness.

I think we just have to sit tight for the email reply from "Darren", I mean, the 404 message isn't instant, there is (intentionally) fuzziness there before you get the message. Unfortunately I think Paramount are just dragging their feet 'cos this isn't released till October. I am hoping there will be an email reply at some point otherwise there would have been no point in any of this.

Still checking out the videos everyday for missed clues though lol!!!

Just a heads up, not sure if I missed it, but I know there's at LEAST one new trailer. Just static, then Katie screams into the light. It's 7 seconds long. Smile

Also, the video player has been changed/updated.

Update:

Just saw, there's also a new 9 second trailer. Looks like one of the girls is possessed and is being shaked by their ... mother?

Also snagged a interesting screenshot from one of them:

In addition to these I have seen at least 3 new versions of the trailer on the site. When you refresh the page you see quite a few including one of katie screaming, one of one of the sisters just sitting there looking up at the camers, one of the girl sitting on the trampoline and a black and white version of the entire trailer.

Still nothing, huh?

Alright, I officially give up. This is boring, and going nowhere. See y'all some other time, in some actually interesting ARG (or viral marketing campaign). Hopefully, eventually, I will co-puppetmaster one of these things.

What would you call that? I just want to help write, and let an actual puppetmaster do the... actual puppetmastering... I guess I would be a "Puppetwriter"? lol

Anyway, later y'all.
