I've been working on this one too.. but only got it working backwards from the genes that I could fill in. Ralen's post provided the last ones I needed Smile This puzzle leads to:

EDIT: just pointing out that the name comes from the first letter of the genes.

This puzzle is confusing me. I don't understand what you all are doing?

Here is a good place to start:
http://tinman.vetmed.helsinki.fi/eng/drosophila.html

Basically, scientists give each discovered Drosophila (fruitfly) gene a clever name, often describing its effects.

You have Ulysses Grant where it should be Robert E Lee.

24601

24601 was Jean ValJean's prisoner number in Les Miserables.

SOLVED PUZZLES

1. DARWIN PUZZLE

BUT_FUN.gif
Dear Charles,

Concerning your manuscript,
we are having some difficulty
with your quaint notion of tiny
adhesive notes. Without an un-
forseen degree of improvement,
they will remain far more
irritating than useful. The
editor begs you to simply
rewrite the pages at issue using
full sheets. This will ensure the
best possible outcome for the
upcoming print of you brilliant
opus.

In the meanwhile, I am returning
to you these notes, which have
become detached from the
manuscript pages. Our clerks
have remained unable, or in
some cases, unwilling, to
discern obfuscated or corrupted
phrases and to reconstruct their
chronology. If you would be so
kind...

E: Reverse the whole word

F: Slide the whole word left and send the first letter to the end
