For the BEEWITHH puzzle, I don't believe we've got definitive confirmation that the upper left one is Ash. At least I can't find a matching image in the fraxinus family and that image doesn't appear to be on botanical.com at all (I downloaded the jpgs from the site and scanned thumbnails anyway and couldn't find it or any of the remaining unsolved plants on this list).

I tried looking for the missing ones in Medizinal-Pflanzin but after scanning through 2 of the 3 volumes, my eyes started to cross so I could have just missed them but these are proving troublesome to find.

the fourth plant in beewithh looks like some kind of reed to me.. which would fit with it being used for papyrus, ie 'written on in' egypt.

I can't think of any other feasible answer to the phrase "<plant> is/was written on in <answer>", anyway.

Rice is written on as well as paper made from.

Not papyrus

The "written on in" one is NOT papyrus.

Papyrus looks like a stalk with an "umbrella skeleton" of leaves at the top.

I suspect this may be a plant that is used in India or South America.

OK, let's discuss some strategies for the stamp solve.

We've had one suggestion to add up the numberic values of the letters.

There's another suggestion that we order the names in order of stamp value.

Any others?

Also, what are opinions on middle initials?

OK! Finally, with a little bit of simultaneous editing, the fireflies page is finally up...

give a few minutes for the summary section to list the wav links and creds

checksum, as far as the middle initials, I did some research and it seems einstein didnt have a middle name. dont know if that discounts the idea or maybe his is counted as a space.

also uncle sam probably doesnt have a middle initial.

Alright I think I've got the correct answers for the "only_one_alive" puzzle. The first one still doesn't match up, but it's the only mutation that matches the clue, and none of the mutations beginning with "O" seem to have anything to do with development. Anyway, here's the mostly complete list with explanations.

MAGGIE -Mutation has stunted growth (like Maggie from the Simpsons) and does not progress past first instar
NOOSE -Mutation reacts fatally with 'string' gene
LOT -Mutation loves salt
YURI -Mutation has problems with gravity

OUT COLD -Mutation stops movement in lower temperatures
NAKED CUTICLE -Mutation has deleted denticle belt
ETHER A-GO-GO -Mutation becomes spastic under anesthesia

AMONTILLADO -Mutation cannot hatch from egg
LIQUID FACETS -Mutation has incredibly deformed eyes
INDY -Mutation lives abnormally long
VULCAN -Mutation has deformed legs
EASILY SHOCKED -Mutation is paralyzed by sudden shock (figuratively loses its head)

People on stamps with birth/death years

Washington Irving 1783-1859
Nicholas Copernicus 1473-1543
Carl Sandburg 1878-1967
Albert Einstein 1879-1955
Philo Farnsworth 1906-1971
Uncle Sam (Samuel Wilson?) 1766-1854
Jack London 1876-1916
Annie Oakley 1860-1926
Robert E. Lee 1807-1872
Bronco Nagurski 1908-1990

Are we missing a text clue with this?

Just for completeness, the order to apply the rules to JABBERWOCKY is:

B, A, F, H, G, C, E, D, I

Yeah, I agree that some don't have middle initials. I'm more concerned with getting the right form of each name.

For example, if it's ROBERT E LEE, do we put a period after the E?

If the letters have to line up correctly for the solution, then one character difference is going to shift some things. Hopefully not so much that we can't recognize the solution. Just makes it a bit trickier.

In the beewithh images I think the second image is Spanish Broom (Spartium junceum) or Scotch Broom (Cytisus scoparius)

Medicinal use: Diuretic, cathartic, high doses it has a curare like effect on oeripheral nerves depressing respiration.

Dye: Flowering tops can be use as a yellow dye for wool

(edit 1) added dye

Well, that would explain why it didn't work for me... I was going A, B, C... etc.
