The Big Picture
Stepping back and looking at the story

According to the popular theory that the episodes should be viewed in the following order: 1-2-3-5-6-4-7-8, this is the narrative that unfolds.

A group of four pirates has misplaced a chest of gold. They can't remember where they buried it and while discussing its possible location they will talk in secret code to thwart any spies that may be listening in. (1)

The pirates are fleeing a British ship that is firing upon them. Black Tom saves the ship and the crew by blowing up the sun and hiding them in the cover of darkness. (2)

The pirates are interviewed by Larry King on his show. They admit that they stole the gold from the guys at Glove and Boots. (3)

The pirates play in a poker tournament where Krothers loses a hand, Black Tom wins the pot, and a rotating compass skull emerges from the felt. (5)

A monkey reads a comic about the pirates fighting a monster as well as the British. Then the monkey grows to a gorilla and attacks the pirates.(6)

Black Tom and Krothers spout clues and and complain about vague statements. Very short.(4)

The pirates (minus Tom) stand around the ship at night and fear for ghosts. The parrot accidentally shoots and kills Krothers who returns as a ghost. (7)

The crew holds a seance for Krothers who possesses the parrots body. The captain welcomes his old friend because he now reminds him of his beloved lost Tutty. (Cool

This story doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense to me. If you disregard Krother's injuries I think 6 then 2 then 7 then 8 makes a good deal of sense. Basically the pirates encounter the British in 6, try to escape and succeed when Tom brings on the night in 2, fear for their lives from ghosts in the night in 7, and bring back Krothers the ghost in 8.

As for 1,3,4 and 5 I think 1 could happen just before 6 and 3 and 5 could happen before 1. No idea aout 4. So my proposed timeline is this:
3-5-4-1-6-2-7-8.

I've been thinking more about this "stepping back" idea... The overall story doesn't make much sense, but maybe we need to be looking at each character's story as it is told across the episodes.

The Crothers story: him getting injured in various ways, gave us the order of the episodes. So maybe we should be doing the same thing with the other characters. Mulligan has the story of trying to get to the crow's nest. The Captain has the Tutty story. I can't really think of anything for Black Tom, he has an 'attack' in various episodes: the sword slicing the training dummy, cutting off crothers' sleeves, destroying the sun, throwing star at Larry King, throwing stars at Gorilla.

Most episodes have details contributing to each of these stories, with the last episode being important: Mulligan finally gets up to the crow's nest and is struck by lightning, and we finally get to see what Tutty looks like (and has the word Happy! on its shirt for whatever reason).

maybe this has been brought up before, in another thread, but i believe the "bigger picture" is what the map looks like after we trace out their paths. Not sure if this is THE answer, just a suggestion. I mean, after all, the code of all codes that mulligan gave, and we should have been listening to him from the beginning, was him tracing the captains foot, so retracing steps seems logical enough, then looking at the picture/word/scribbles that are left behind.
