Cheating by using context:

One of the files we're missing obviously mentions the magnetic decay timer. I was noticing that one group looks like it might be decay. The other looks like it might be timer.

Er, this was for the flowers puzzle. First letter of the result words.

Peruvian Bark is correct. Quinine is the extract, AFAIK.

As discussed way back on page 15 or something.. that picture is used for both Quinine (in the original manuscript) AND Peruvian Bark (in botany.com). It's entirely irrelevant though since the answer we want is still Malaria.

Peruvian Bark or Quinine or Cinchona succirubra, dosnet matter. Its used for Malaria.

Rember, a rose by any other name will still cure malaria....or something like that...

Damnit, I thought I'd tried that already. I'd definitely tried timer_delay, delay_timer and timer_decay. *sniff*

Congrats. Smile

[quote="Oecumenix"]Summary of botany puzzle so far (confirmed plants only)

quinine - for the treatment of - Malaria
(reed??)- written on in - (egypt?)
Madder - yields the color - Red

Well, from Phaedra's youth, when she wanted to be an herbalist (don't have time for much, sorry):

The first plant in beewithh looks like honeysuckle (NOT Japanese honeysuckle). It can be used to treat asthma and other chest conditions. It can also be used as a laxative or an expectorant. It's supposedly antispasmodic, but I don't know for sure.

Quote:
I think spunkinator was on the right track when he said eyebright isn't used to treat eyes.. although it is good for them. Normally you treat a disorder. "in the treatment of eyes" doesn't seem right to me.

Now, this may not be relevant, because they use of images from an old herbal suggest that they're interested in for what the plants were *traditionally* used, rather than for what we now know they can be used. But:

Eyebright has anti-inflammatory and astringent properties, so it's good for treating sinusitus, or basically whenever you've got inflamed membranes.

Hope that helps.

ok, to further dante's theory on the books:

beauty and railroad: both about a complete understanding of the topic
london and dog breeds: both guides (not understanding, just facts)
national velvet and giant: both classic stories

these are in the same order as the clues
