[PUZZLE] "Bickle" (from Ron update 10/15)
Quote:
XXXXXXX:
I wanted to let you I finally heard from Jaimie. I sent her an e-mail updating her as to my plans, now that it looks like she will be staying at the Dream Projector facility a little longer than planned.
Speaking of which, I wanted to let you know what I am up to also. I've spent the last few days working on the pages from the book I found as well as checking out the Gold Hill area. A few people wrote to me about the old photograph I found tucked inside the book, to tell me that the picture was of the Gold Hill Fire House. A couple also mentioned that they saw a word apparently scratched into the photograph, the word BICKLE. Well, even though the Fire House is no longer standing there still may be something worth looking into, as I found "Bickle" is a well-known name around here and part of a long-standing unsolved mystery to boot.
I don't have time to go into the details about what I found in each e-mail I write but I put a brief report and some images up on my Ronsworld site at www.ronsworld.org/goldhillupdate.html .
I am heading up to Minnesota to meet with this Charles guy from the Cambridge Mental Hospital in just a little bit. I really hope I'll have more luck looking around this time with someone who knows the property like Charles does. I'll keep you posted on what I find.
Thanks for all your help.
Ron

Here's my first crack at decoding the wall carving @ http://www.ronsworld.org/bickle1.html
Between (book) and (lion), lies 223
a m(ark) to the (path)
4 finding me
The (oven???) there
lets you (denote/note???)
the ones with(out) names
are (hiding) (below)
Some are wrong I'm sure, and some are right I'm sure.

Owlerz:
Thanks for attempting to translate the Latin from the old book for me. I have been working on the same thing for several days now and managed to come up with something similar to what you did, with the help of an old lady here in Gold Hill that used to teach Latin years ago. I think she took some literal license to make it sound more poetic, but I'm useless with Latin so who knows? Several other people wrote me about the same passage and sent me results that were very close to ours too. Here's what I (and the old lady) came up with:
Born of assassins, sages and knights
Hidden in prayers, magic, and rites
The seventh of seven, the lore made flesh
We are the shepherds, the keepers (?) of herds
Hidden in symbols, artwork, and words
The seventh of seven, the lore made flesh
The youngest of seven, the princes of Thebes
Spared by Apollo young Ilioneus flees
The seventh of seven, the lore made flesh
The deepest of secrets, a shadow through time
From seventh to seventh, an unbroken line
The seventh of seven, the lore made flesh
We are the holders of knowledge forbidden
In places of power and worship we've hidden
The seventh of seven, the lore made flesh
A mask in a mask, and another behind
Leaving no trace of our power through time
The seventh of seven, the lore made flesh
I've also been working on trying to figure out what all the damn symbols might mean but haven't come up with anything definitive yet. I'll let you know if I do.
I also wanted to let you know what I am up to. I've spent the last few days checking out the Gold Hill area. my take on the picture/word puzzle
between book and lion there's 223
a mark (m+ark) to the trail?
for finding me
the (man/boy/male/mars+ ve?) near there
lets you know (note-te=no->know)
the ones with out (not in) names
are (r) hiding (not low) below(bee+not high)
don't think that's a V tho
it's the sign for male... well it could be mars? (and enaxor points out also iron, which is FE)
so... malve, manve, boyve, marsve, feve?
IF it's a V

Here is the riddle from the other page Ron posted.
Code:
Marty Bickles Note
for the first, of 10 take only 9
In the next take 30 and whats behind
Skip 2 lines and then take only 29
below take 6 and skip one line
take 2, go down and take 15
in the next find i and f and take what's between
1 more down and start with 1
then 11, 16, and 3 past 21
one more down and again take 1
on the next back up 3(?) from 31
on the same line use 32 and 33
on the next take what follow countie
now on the same line just multiply
half a dozen times 6 and half a dozen times 5
again skip a line and take 31
drop down a line take the 1 that's past 1
still on that line take what starts word number 2
look for a mark take what follows it too
go down one more to the very first word
there are 3 i's to see take what surrounds the third
1 of the 2 that you just took is o
take the letter that follows you're done now you know
There may be a couple of mistakes so beware.
Quote:
April 7, 1869 was a historic and tragic day for Gold Hill, Nevada, as a mine fire killed dozens
and dozens of local townspeople. No family suffered more than the Bickles, however, as three brothers,
Richard, George, and James Bickles all died in the tragedy. In the 1980's, Marty Bickle the great, great, great, grandson of on the Bickle brothers, spent his family inheritance trying the prove that the Great Fire
Tragedy was deliberately set in order for secret interests to take over the lucrative Gold Hill mines. He built
a little museum dedicated to the Great Fire Tragedy and stocked it with items, many of which he personally
recovered in the endless days he spent exploring the abandoned mines for proof of his theory. He saw to it
that this museum would be funded for quite some time into the future with a trust fund he established.
Sadly Marty seemed to finally lose his grip on reality as he emerged one day from the mines after being
missing for over two weeks. It was presumed he was wandering through the old mines and tunnels the entire
time. Legend has it he actually entered through the old mines in Gold Hill but was found wandering dazed
and incoherent near the county line miles away. In his hands was a piece of paper with a hand scrawled
Message that no one to this day has been able to figure out.
edited to add the story

(mars + tear + e) = mastery?
Anyone have any ideas what the little wave next to it could be?

Does anybody else thinks the Marty Bickle stuff refers to the Seventh Sons book?
The rebuses could be referring to pictures in the book (there's a lion), and the long note can be referring to that text- Ron made it pretty clear that we should be puzzle solving with his specific version.

Taking the riddle from "Marty Bickles Note" above and using the Devils Gate marker at http://www.strangerthanfictionmagazine.com/images/marker.jpg
I have transcribed the message.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
They live below yet seek the son
If someone wants to double check it that would be great.
I figured Marty would have used something he'd seen and since the book didn't seem plausible as something he'd seen, I remembered seeing the marker at the website. If you read the first line of the riddle it says "of 10 take only 9", if you look at the marker the title is "Devil's Gate", which is 10 letters.
*edited to help explain why I used the marker

Could 'Between the book and the lion lies 223' be a biblical reference?

I'm not sure if Ex is editing her post so I'll go ahead and post this about the Rebus. If you read the marker on Straner than fiction.com, the last paragraph says "between Storey and Lyon Counties" Those are the book and lion symbols in the rebus. The symbols we were stuck on are his for the mars symbol, tore for the weird V symbol and e , History .
Thanks to Owler's explanation of what the tilde mark means we figure this is an approximation or near to the meaning of Historical marker. The Historical Marker is #223 . This was figured out after Enaxor solved the riddle. It's just verification that the rebus was leading us to Stranger Than Fiction and the Historical Marker.
