[SPEC] Mission: ICEFLY, Related to Syfy's "Alphas"?

My friend was watching Syfy tonight and they aired a preview of an upcoming episode of their hit series, "Alphas". Here's a link to the video.

http://video.syfy.com/shows/alphas

A glimpse can be seen at 11-10 seconds, of what 'Appears' to be a motorised fly landing in the girls hand.

I cant say for sure if this is related, but it looks pretty damn close.

Credit for the find goes to him, but i thought i'd present it for examination. Smile

Sorry for double post.
I'd edit my previous post But I dont have an account. I registered ages ago and the registration derped.

I should also note that the 'motorised fly' seen in the clip does have wings but due to terrribad video quality, I couldnt get a good capture.

Very interesting find...

Generally I'm pretty outspoken about MIF/TSN being gum only. Alphas wouldn't be a bad connection except for the fact that I feel like it would be bad business to market for it without telling anyone what you're marketing for, all the way past the pilot episode airing. IMO, if this was for Alphas we should know by know.

Still, the theme does seem to fit. And the robo-fly is very curious indeed. Then again, every appearance of the icefly has been the exact same creature, and the robo-fly looks just different enough for me to have some pretty serious doubts.

I was watching Alphas a few weeks ago, and started thinking the same thing.

The show is about people with "heightened senses" and such. And there was a scene in which one of the characters was offering everyone gum before going in to catch the bad guys because it helped focus the senses or something.

I don't actually think the show's related to ARG so much as I am now very aware of anything and everything having to do with the senses or gum or flies that I come across.

In a previous episode, there was a mute girl who was able to encode messages in her own "language" (using household objects to make noises).

I wondered this myself...but it would be odd to link it to "Alphas" in such a loose way, considering the season is about half over.

By the time the link was revealed...the season would be almost complete and any "bump" in ratings would be almost impossible to garner.

It's always good the compare things, I'd say, this ARG is getting really defined on what it should be. Somebody can easily grasp the fact that this is for 5 Gum, for obvious reasons. But we can't say the same for anything else. I do like the idea that this could be tied to the show, better than what some others are thinking what this could be for. I never seen the show myself, but it might be something to try out, show that others have shown interest in it and comparing it to this.

Edit: Fixed.

Ever since SDCC, i've seen alot of folks say 'Cant people see this is just for gum'?

I find that hard for many reasons. This ARG is far too expansive.
For the flash game alone, they would have had to hire a number of 3D modellers and flash programmers, as well as artists, website coders, and then they would have had to spend a fair amount of time and man power organising and orchestrating the fly drops.

Plus, some folks at the SDCC managed to squeeze the MIF folks present. I quote 'We got there and they had a black van filled with boxes full of envelopes that they were handing out. I asked them if this was about Gum. they said 'we can't say'.' Basically they would neither confirm nor deny. But I continue, 'We talked to them for about half an hour about various things and finally asked again, Is it about gum.

'they said simply,
'No'.'

Its paraphrased, but that was the general gist I got from another post somewhere here on UF. now, there's a possibility that they were jerking chains and lied, but i dunno. Its not in human nature to lie, even if someone is told to.

Not when you've got thousands of people succling at your teat for every precious drop of information they can get thir greedy little minds on.

I for one, am not convinced this is JUST gum. mind you, my consumption of gum has gone from nil to a pack a day. I'd say their campaign worked flawlessly if their goal was to increase sales by having five gum sponsor and host their events/servers, pay for expenses and hire their design team.

That's interesting about the SDCC people... I couldn't get over there when they were doing envelopes, never saw them. But I would point out that I've gotten oodles of misinformation at SDCC (for non-ARG stuff); generally people aren't given much info about the work they're doing, and frequently even folks working the same booth who *aren't* random lackeys will give you opposing info. For example, people will tell you definitively that a specific giveaway doesn't exist, then give it away the next morning.

It's not deliberate misinformation, it's just lack of communication.

I saw the Alphas promo as well, and thought it was a fun coincidence. But i will tell you for sure: Syfy doesn't do viral advertising. They really don't like spending money on ads at all, and on the heels of cancelling one of their most successful shows due to budget costs, I find it highly unlikely they'd have launched such an expensive, obscure campaign for another.

But hey, if it turns out to not be "just" for gum, cool. If not, cool. I'm just playing for the game.

Both very good points.

I suppose the final conclusion to anything would be to simply wait and see. and of course, enjoy this for what it is- a well thought, well executed arg that's been a hell of alot of fun, for sure. Smile

Gum or not, I'm in it till the end.
