In all reality, Doug Jones didnt even say anything about being Slenderman. He just said that the idea sounded interesting (If the screenshot of a Facebook conversation can be believed)

I still think he is urinating on the creators collective heads.

I did my thing on tumblr after reading the creator reactions, but I'll add something else. So he only read the SA thread. Good. The creators who first started (like with MH and JAF) only had that to go off of. They don't Need the other creators permission or backing. Just like no one creator needs another to do what they want. Of course this guy almost certainly won't get it through Hollywood, but might as well wait and see. Actually, gimme a second to post my original thing from tumblr. It was a response to the posting of some creators debating over it not the thread's responses in general, Keep in Mind.

"While I think the guy talking about the movie is a bullshitter, I see no reason to be so negative about it. Just the same way that bloggers get offended when people say they think that Slendy can only be best done via vlog (and vice versa) why would you want to not see him in a new medium? Let it be explored how well it can be done. I understand that was talked of by creators, but some of those lines are acting like the Mythos belongs to specifically them, not being changed without their input (and why that's is sad and funny should be fairly obvious). Chill out and let it happen, if it actually is happening. Who knows, you might like it, or it might even change things. Perhaps for the better, even. But hearing he referred to bloggers as 'fanfic writers' was really out of line, as I'm sure a lot of the guy actions were, but a lot of the hate from that posted creator chat wasn't towards whatever he said in the thread, but on doing a Slenderman Movie period.

Can I just say, for the record, that I never, at any point, carried the "listen to the creators, we know what the right thing to do is" line and actually felt really uncomfortable when other creators were saying it but didn't say anything because I was having a discussion with Steven, not anyone else.

As it happens, his latest plans for the movie sound good to me as he seems to be willing to go the extra mile to maintain immersion and go down the "release for free, then offer merch" route which I like to see as a good way for both creators and fans to get a little something back for their hard work without compromising the Mythos. Mr. Simmons has my full support in his endeavours and I'm looking forward to seeing what be brings to the beautiful, ravening monster that is the modern Slender Man Mythos.

I agree that he's learned a lot. His first proposal was unacceptable in whole. The newest ones have a bit to be desired, but I could see this happening.

Probably not Hollywood, though.

I stumbled across something that made me think of this thread and the SN one. I found one objection to Simmons' original project particularly compelling: the objection (made by Reach, and probably others) to any pay-to-consume content within the mythos. Made a lot of sense to me, so I'd like opinions on two not-so-hypothetical situations, both concerning this.

That's "Out of the Black," a $0.99 Kindle eBook by Philip Deford, "set in the Slenderman mythos." It's the only eBook that's blatantly Slender-related in the US Kindle store. I did a little poking around, and you can actually read it online for free. (Is it sleazy to say where? It's not on a Slenderfan site or a personal blog.) I didn't download the whole eBook; the free one is a short story, so maybe it's abridged. But going by the Kindle sample and the file size, I'd say they're the same. The free one was released about a month before the eBook.

First opinion request: Knowing only the above, what do you think of this approach? Equivalent to MH selling DVDs? Or something different, since you'd have to go searching for the free one, with no heads-up anywhere (that I can find)?

Now here's the kicker. [Spoilers] The story is written journal-style. The narrator uses both "Slenderman" and "the [sic] Operator." He does see scary Slenderman mythos shit online, but only after writing "the Operator." MH is never mentioned, nor are any videos. The specific term is important, because he later reveals that he didn't intend to type "the Operator," but "the stranger." He doesn't know where the term came from, if he wrote it or it got changed. And there are decidedly unMH elements in this story.

Second opinion request: So, knowing that, does your first opinion change?

Incidentally, OotB doesn't have any reviews on Amazon. I'd say the story is meh. It probably BINGOs out as your average Slendy fare. And if anyone thinks Troseph should be notified, please do, or let me know how.

I hazard to point the thread in this (possibly ot comment)...

For me, one of the strengths of the slenderman mythos is that it's a collaboratively established universe. It has some major pillars of narrative (ie more successful/riveting blogs and vlogs) but for the most part, it has the tone of fanfic without a primary source. And I'm not trying to disrespect the origins of the sa thread, or the innovation required to birth the creeper himself, just trying to point out how significantly more lush the slenderverse has grown since it's inception.
(this is where I get a little cuckoo)
It reminds me of the Internet itself, or wikipedia- a generally autonomous zone that relies on the majority to vet it's truth.
That said, I'm less interested in stories that try to play into the mythos with deference to at least SOME of the pre-established canons, and wholly disinterested in narratives that require readers/participants to pay with credit cards to gain access to them.
(Marble Hornets does NOT fall under that umbrella. It, much like The Guild, is a popular web series available for free on the Internet with additional swag available to hardcore fans.)
Lastly! I apologize for typos, this was a smartphone post...
