On http://www.urbanmythology.net/scanner.html, we got a list of IPs
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
1 - 216.239.41.99
2 - 216.109.118.68
3 - 207.68.172.234
4 - 66.139.79.27
5 - 67.40.102.43
6 - 64.40.102.43
7 - 159.153.253.82

After that, got a link to http://www.urbanmythology.net/hacker.html, where you could put the IPs in and test different combinations until you got it right and got a fragment of a password file.

Next, the fragments:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

1
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxXXXXXxxxxx
xxxxXXXxXXXxxxx
2
xxXXxxxxxxxXXxx
xxXXxxxxxxxXXxx
xxXXxxxxxxxXXxx
3
xxxXXxxxxxXXxxx
xxxxXXxxxXXxxxx
xxxxxXxxxXxxxxx
4
xxxXXXXxXXXXxxx
xxxXXXXxXXXXxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
5
xxXXxxxxxxxXXxx
xxXXxxxxxxxXXxx
xxxXXxxxxxXXxxx
6
xxxxxXxxxXxxxxx
xxxxxXXxXXxxxxx
xxxXXXXxXXXXxxx
7
xxxxXXXxXXXxxxx
xxxXXxxxxxXXxxx
xxXXxxxxxxxXXxx

In order of IPs 1-7

Put the fragments together in order of IP, look at it, looks like 2 symbols, top looking like the greek omega symbol, bottom looking like a weird X.

As per an idea in IRC by SquareKnight, we put the lines of 3 together so that the upper and lowercase x's matched up, and got this:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxXXXXXxxxxx
xxxxXXXxXXXxxxx
xxxxXXXxXXXxxxx
xxxXXxxxxxXXxxx
xxXXxxxxxxxXXxx
xxXXxxxxxxxXXxx
xxXXxxxxxxxXXxx
xxXXxxxxxxxXXxx
xxXXxxxxxxxXXxx
xxXXxxxxxxxXXxx
xxxXXxxxxxXXxxx
xxxXXxxxxxXXxxx
xxxxXXxxxXXxxxx
xxxxxXxxxXxxxxx
xxxxxXxxxXxxxxx
xxxxxXXxXXxxxxx
xxxXXXXxXXXXxxx
xxxXXXXxXXXXxxx
xxxXXXXxXXXXxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Order of fragments - 1725364

It looks like a giant omega --'

i think it's "omega chi".

from Ed's email: "If we come up with a password, we should be able to use it Sunday night when the site normally becomes accessible. Hopefully we can get in and rig the Seventh Sons server to allow us to access it all the time."

so looks like we'll have to wait for Sunday anyways...

I think we might need to do somthing more with it then just using the x's on the seventh sons. Can somebody maybe double check my x's i'm not sure if they are all right. Espically the ones that arn't the same length.

An alternative

The following spoiler is preserved for the edification of all, and because I don't like to delete my own mistakes. I miscopied one of the password fragments, resulting in my answer being complete nonsense.

I contend, however, that the following solution is correct in an alternate universe.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

I noticed that there was one and only one way to arrange the fragments so that the top of each fragment is identical to the bottom of the one above it, like so:

___XXXX_XXXX___
___XXXX_XXXX___ 5
___XX_____XX___
___XX_____XX___
____XX___XX____ 3
_____X___X_____
_____X___X_____
_____XX_XX_____ 6
___XXXX_XXXX___
___XXXX_XXXX___
___XXXX_XXXX___ 4
_______________
_______________
_____XXXXX_____ 1
____XXX_XXX____
____XXX_XXX____
___XX_____XX___ 7
__XX_______XX__
__XX_______XX__
__XX_______XX__ 2
__XX_______XX__

Deleting the joining lines (the duplicated line between two fragments) yields this:

___XXXX_XXXX___
___XXXX_XXXX___ 5
___XX_____XX___
____XX___XX____ 3
_____X___X_____
_____XX_XX_____ 6
___XXXX_XXXX___
___XXXX_XXXX___ 4
_______________
_____XXXXX_____ 1
____XXX_XXX____
___XX_____XX___ 7
__XX_______XX__
__XX_______XX__ 2
__XX_______XX__

Which looks kinda like an emoticon. Not much help, I'm afraid.

I'd agree that it makes an "Omega" and then a "Chi"

Could the password be, "Ouch"?

Also, try going to the actuall websites that it finds:

I recognise all but the 6th ones...

http://216.239.41.99/ -- Google
http://216.109.118.68/ -- Yahoo
http://207.68.172.234/ -- MSN
http://66.139.79.27/ -- Unfiction Smile
http://67.18.253.68/ -- cPanel
http://64.40.102.43/ -- ???
http://159.153.253.82/ -- Electronic Arts

http://64.40.102.43/

I think it might be with asiaventures.com
Nothing much seems to be there though.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Some stuff in the source on http://64.40.102.43/ leads to http://64.40.102.43/dontclickme.php which is apprently just a spider trap

Don't know if hidin it was necessary. Still tryin to figure out what should be hidden and what doesn't matter.

I think the Electronic Arts IP address is a nod to Majestic. This little IP tracer and hacker program reminds me of the program we had in Majestic that allowed us to hack into a communication satalite to redirect it's signal. We also caused the satalite's orbit to decay and it crashed back to earth which was shocking to say the least. This was so much fun. Thanks for the memories Very Happy

And... Omega was the answer!

Ed is going to try today, we should know if its will work soon.

Check out his update at:

The 64.40.102.43 is registered with a canadian ISP called NETNation.

I got this info from arin.net.

Also, now the scanner page confirms the omega theory:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Thanks to everyone's great work we were able to trace and retrieve 7 password fragment files. Many of you noticed that there were several "overlapping" lines, guides to how the lines should be arranged. Here are the password file fragments assembled in what we believe to be the correct pattern:

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxXXXXXxxxxx
xxxxXXXxXXXxxxx
xxxXXxxxxxXXxxx
xxXXxxxxxxxXXxx
xxXXxxxxxxxXXxx
xxXXxxxxxxxXXxx
xxXXxxxxxxxXXxx
xxxXXxxxxxXXxxx
xxxxXXxxxXXxxxx
xxxxxXxxxXxxxxx
xxxxxXXxXXxxxxx
xxxXXXXxXXXXxxx
xxxXXXXxXXXXxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I've colored the capital X's yellow to make them stand out more. It looks to me like an omega symbol, so that's what I am going to try when the Seventh Sons' site opens up tonight. I have a little program prepared that should fool their server into thinking it is always Sunday night. If I succeed, the site will remain accessible beyond the normal 24 hour time period. I'll post a message later tonight to let you know if we were successful.

Thanks again for all your help.

And its been updated again, with:

Great News! The omega password worked and I was able to insert my little program into the Seventh Sons' server. If everything goes as planned, the site should now remain accessible beyond the normal shut down time of Monday evening at 7:00 PM eastern. Keep your fingers crossed but I think we did it. I couldn't have done it without your help. Now we just need to figure out how to make some progress on what's there.

"Oh no, it's not an omega, it doesn't look like an omega." Yeah, who's laughing now. Razz
