De-lurking to say hi and I'm playing. The first thing I thought of when I read lotion was suntan lotion. Maybe something related to the sun?

Observed like a cake makes me think of the way someone watches a cake baking through the glass window in the oven door. That again fits in with heat and suntan lotion.

Trying to catch up here...
Looking at the newest puzzle, someone already mentioned The Wizard of Oz due to the cowardly lion quote on the 4th line. I think I have tied the first and third lines to The Wizard of Oz as well. Vorticity maximum refers to the highest pressure at the center of a cyclone or tornado . I think "blessed the rains" refers to the band Toto who sang a song called Africa with the repeating lyrics of "I bless the rains". I'm not 100% sure about the "gift of gods" line, but maybe it refers to the rainbow and the link to Oz would be the song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow".
Maybe someone can take that and run with it...or toss it in the trash. I'm still waiting on an email response to catch me up with the rest of you.

We still don't know what we are looking for. Some kind of connection between the lines of text of course, but not how to proceed.

Other random thoughts:
According to Greek mythology, olives were the gift of the gods, granted by Poseidon.
Poseidon is the former name for one of Jupiter's moons.
The Great Red Spot on Jupiter is the largest known vortex in the solar system

I emailed him a summary of most of the information LatentMoths had found, plus some other thoughts of my own. He responded fairly quickly with one line:
Quote:
'Gift of the gods' is a translation, not a metaphor.
I responded with more research that's easiest to post in its entirety:
Quote:
Using 'gift of the gods' as a meaning, I can connect it to the name 'Theodosia', which is a Greek name. This comes from 'theos', the word for god, and 'dosis', which means gift.
Intended or not, the name Theodosia appears in the book called Dragonwell Dead, by Laura Childs, where in one particular scene, she speaks of a strong orchid scent that reminds her of the poppy field from The Wizard of Oz.
He's quite willing to help if we're close, but not quite there. I just got another email:
Quote:
It is very likely the same referent. The most common translation from the Greek would be 'Dorothea.'
So...looks like each line has a connection to The Wizard of Oz. Now to figure out what's next!

One of the permanent pieces at the Philadelphia Museum of Art is "Birthday" by Dorothea Tanning
Tanning as in suntan lotion, and birthday as in cake!
