Puzzle - New Red/Blue E-mails

We might as well spec about the puzzle in one thread, since they are no doubt related.

I took the two files and lined them up next to each other. Maybe it's just me, but there's something that. the left side looks like bearded man to me, while the right side could possibly be some symbol. I might be reaching, but take a look see if anything pops out at you.
One of the files had a slight border which i used to determine which one should go first.

It's also possible that the numbers from the e-mails might have a direct purpose.

I'd like to correct, the left side(red) looks like a stoic face, when the head is tilted slightly to the left.

these kinds of pics can be done with a software called mosascii or something similiar. It will take a pic that you provide and make it into ascii or binary numbers. Smile

I tried, and all I get are these weird numbers and letters:

veopdt fgghao qqiya1 qdqhom
sqolnd mqi966 bnqjei z0tq4d
sq246v bnhgha 6qoiej qf5i25
diagdd fuit5e 9iny0f t9agdd
nbjiig iee9gn plt7e8 tejips
it5172 5wgy4f j5

Shocked I get it! It's another puzzle....
I'm finally catching on...

Something....

At the top of the Red e-mail were the numbers 1/4/6.
At the top of the Blue e-mail were the numbers 7/22/24.
Turn these into letters, and you get A/D/F, and G/V/X, or ADFGVX.
ADFGVX was a code used by the Germans at the beginning of WWII, before they had the Enigma machine!

http://members.magnet.at/wilhelm.m.plotz/Doc/ADFGVX.html

I've been wondering when a game would use this cipher. Finally, one has, it seems Smile

Now, what is encoded in this cipher? Who knows... However, a good indication of an ADFGVX cipher is if the ciphertext is made up of just A's, D's, F's, G's, V's, and X's, or sometimes just 6 unique symbols.

Someone looked at taking the immense amount of letter/numbers encoded in the icarus pic and trying it through the cipher?

There are WAY more than 6 unique characters, and an ADFGVX cipher requires 6 unique characters.

<slapping forehead> Doh </slapping>

I realized it once I posted it.

I was wondering if there was more data encoded in the picture, but I guess not. The data included (the numbers etc) are just a byproduct of the ascii encoding, I would think.

From my 2 posts at CD:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Put the red and blue doc/pdf files side by side (red on the left, blue on the right). It's a painting of Icarus. It's easier to see (at least for me) to put the doc files together in word then decrease the zoom level to 25%.

Leads to http://www.mythosphere.org/icarus.html which is another puzzle.

Picture of the painting can be seen here:
http://www.icare-espace.com/image/icarus.jpg

And

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

The other figure in the painting (which is "Fall of Icarus" by Peter Paul Rubens)
is Daedalus, Icarus' father.

This leads to:
http://www.mythosphere.org/daedalus.html

OK... Rolling Eyes

NOW there's no more data encoded in the picture....

(waits for the third page address to be pointed out to him.)

Sheesh. I'm working my butt off over here. I can't possibly pay attention to this. That's my excuse, yeah! Laughing

From CD, ElderOfZion speced:
Quote:
I wish this were less fumbling and more definitive -- but it's a code, and it's me (which is never the best combination for sterling insight ... it does not appear that the 6 x 6 grid contained in the Daedalus html file can be used directly to solve the icarus message by direct substitution.
It is our thought that the grid itself must be encoded in some way -- and that this code must be broken first.

There are three possible key words from tonight's material, each with six letters -- FACETS (e-mail titles to both groups), GRAVES (Author of both poems), and ICARUS (subject of picture). Any of these could be key words to organize the letters and numbers.

Another possibility is that any of these could be used as key words for columnor row transposition. If the grid uses a column transposition, and FACETS were the keyword for example, the columns would be read in the order 412365 (in the alphabetical order of the keyword, A-C-E-F-S-T). It's even possible that one keyword might be used for the rows, and another for the columns. At this point, the notion probably exceeded the grasp of those of us online at the time, but maybe it will stir a notion
in the better and brighter that I'm not.

Finally, it could be that different lines have different keys. In all, 30 of the
36 alpha-numeric characters appear in the six lines of code -- so, either, there are numerics in the solve, or different substitution patterns in different parts of the message.

I agree with most of what Elder says, except (giving the pervsersity of the PM's) it may be that we need to swap left-right and/or top-bottom to arrive at the proper solution
