[Trailhead] Veil Nanoscience Inc.
[GAME OVER] - Thanks for playing!

I received an 8.5/11" black envelope yesterday from a corporation called Veil Nanoscience Inc. - it was addressed to no one by name, and only had my shipping address listed on the front, and a postage sticker in the top-right corner.

Now, initially, I thought it was some kind of school or medical company offering me a position in their program (seeing as how I'm a declared Pre-med student) or asking me to come visit their school. Well, I was wrong, to a certain extent.

Inside the envelope was a very professional, pristine brochure folder of the same size, with the same logo and company name on the front. The contents of the folder is a packet about 12 pages long, explaining who the company was and the program they were running.

Instead of typing it all up for you guys, I figured I'd just scan everything and upload it. Enjoy. See what you can make of it.

Envelope & Packet Contents

Now, I emailed Theresa Markovich (her email is listed on the last page) and asked for any other information she had - I also inquired as to why the Safety Concerns page was all washed out and etc.

Here is our correspondence thus far:

Dear Ms. Markovich,

Just today (9/12/11) I received an information packet detailing the company you work for (Veil Nanoscience Inc.) regarding your Project Mnemosyne. After reading through the packet rather thoroughly, it's certainly piqued my interest concerning the topic, and I was simply writing to inquire about any other information you might have regarding the project that wasn't already covered in the packet that might aid me in my decision as to whether or not I shall participate. Also, interestingly enough, your "Safety Concerns" page 7 (although oddly, it is labeled page 5, though it comes after page 6) of the packet is washed out, and unintelligible. I was only able to make out a few lines of text through the distortion.

I look forward to your response.

Regards,

Damian Rivers

Damian,

I'm glad I caught this, I was just heading out of the office for the day.

We've been doing a lot to fix the mistake in the materials we sent out. We apologize for the inconvenience. You can find a PDF of the materials on our website under the Jobs heading.

We're extremely excited to get the process for Project Mnemosyne underway. This is actually Phase Two of a much grander vision to bring memory implants to the public. During our first phase, Project-77, testing was done strictly on chimpanzees, as well as a few other mammals.

The chimp testing was a resounding success.

We are accepting applications until October 5th. Between now and then, more materials will be made public. We urge you to apply as early as possible. The application can be found on our website at www.veilnanoscience.com under the Jobs page.

Again, I apologize for the mix-up in the materials.

Damian,

Upon further inquiring once I got into the office today, it actually seems like it wasn't just your materials that got mixed up. It seems that ALL of them got mixed up. This was done by hand, which actually makes it even harder to believe. As of now, we assume it was a prank or inside joke of some sort by someone in the HR office. I'm sure the HR Director will talk to the employees over there today.

Again, sorry for any confusion.

I'd also like to point out to you that filling out the application will have more information sent to you over the next few weeks.

Thank you, have a great day.

- Theresa

I've not written her back yet. Also, upon investigation of the website, I came across this information:

And finally, on every page (or close to it) there is a letter that is italicized and bold-faced. The letters are "RYWTER". Anyone else receive this packet? Or hear of anything like this?

This looks sweet, I'm in. Started out by googling "Alec Veil," and in addition to Veil's website, was also pointed to the Presidio Institute that came up in the whois.

Alec Veil was a teacher there, left the faculty in 1992. Here is his bio.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Alec Veil

Position:
Instructor of Neural Engineering and Nanoscience.

Education:
PhD in Neural Engineering, Stanford University, June 1977.

Masters in Computer Science & Neural Engineering, Stanford University, April 1981.

Personal:
Founder & CEO of Veil Nanoscience Inc. and former Lead Director of Research at CBALtech

Googled CBALtech and found a website, pretty bare bones, haven't looked at it yet, but it's for sure in game.

The Presidio website has a ton of dead ends, so it will be pretty easy to find the meaningful pieces of information. Aside from Veil's bio, I also found a bio for one Gloria Larkin. Ms. Larkin is not on the Veil Nanoscience organizational chart that was mailed to Korinthian, so she's the first new name. Later I'm gonna google all the names on that chart.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Gloria Larkin

Position:
Professor of Computer Science and Information Technology.

Education:
Master in Information Science, University of Pittsburgh, June 1987.

Personal:
Published journals such as "Computer Surveys: Information on the Rise" and "Neurological Systems Today."

Haven't explored further, have a 5-6PM time commitment, just wanted to get this up beforehand for other people to research on. I'll be back in a couple hours at which point I'm diving in fully.

Confirmed IG websites:

Just as a mention that i'm 99% sure this is from an email I guess about half a year back asking for postal address.

You missed a few, including the page number on page 5 (which is not page 5). I can't remember all of them and the packet is at home so I can't double-check. Couldn't figure out what to do with them either.

Feasible, but after I scanned it for a minute, doesn't seem likely. However it would be quite the coincidence, because mnemosyne isn't exactly, you know, a word, per se. Anyway, I'm getting started on an all-inclusive post covering everything we've got so far, I'll include it as a potential lead. On that same note, posters of unfiction, you have an hour to post something in this thread, less I commit an unpardonable double post. Big ol' wall o' text comin' up in a bit.

Um, this looks weirdly professional for an ARG. Are we sure this is going to be an ARG and not an actual thing?

I know it sounds kinda speculative with the nanotechnology, but we're sure this is gonna be an ARG, right?

I agree with the heightened professionalism, but I fairly sure it is an ARG. The random bold letters in the handbook and the small amount of required information on the application point to ARG.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I did some more digging around the CBALtech website. Under Projects, there are links to a research and non-profit group focused on malaria.

http://www.malaria.org/
http://www.nothingbutnets.net/

Going back to CBALtech, here is some info listed on their site:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

"Founded in 1975 by Dr. Joseph Silva and his wife, Dr. Alice Silva, CBALtech has gone through many transformations but has always had a clear and defined goal: provide research data and information to help fix the problems of the world."

From here, I went back to Google to find info on the founders:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Dr. Joseph Silva Bio snippet (full info can be found at http://www.health.mil/dhb/members/Silva-Bio-11_13_07.pdf)

Dr. Silva currently serves as a Professor of Internal Medicine (Division of Infectious Diseases and Immunology) at the UC Davis School of Medicine. He previously served as Dean of the Medical School (1997-2005) and Chairman of Internal Medicine (1982-1997). Post appointments include Professor of Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School and as a Lecturer at University of Texas at San Antonio. In addition to his academic appointments, Dr. Silva has served as a Consultant for Kaiser Permanente Hospital, for the Veterans Administration Hospitals in Ann Arbor and Northern California, and as Staff Physician at USAF Medical Center at Lackland AFB (major).

I was also able to find an office address and phone number:
UC Davis Medical Center
4150 V St
Sacramento, CA 95817
Phone: 916-734-3815
Strikethrough since it's OOG

Information on Dr. Alice Silva is difficult to find. Her names doesn't turn up much on Google.

I hope this is helpful

Alright, for those of you that didn't get a packet like myself, and are interested in getting involved, I'm gonna summarize everything here so far, as well as some early legwork I've done to get us off on the right foot.

The Packet:

http://imgur.com/a/lDpIQ#zAOXm

This packet of information was sent to user Korinthian, among others. He was kind enough to scan every page of it for all of us. Follow the link if you want to see the whole thing, but here's a summary of the important stuff.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The cover of the packet gives us a website, http://www.veilnanoscience.com/ as well as a mailing address for Veil Nanoscience. A preliminary google search makes it appear as if this is a fictional address. There is a notable blue ink mark above the address label. Scrawled onto the label containing Korinthian's address in blue ink are the letters RYWTER with the E underlined. The packet has an introductory letter from CEO Alec T. Veil, and gives us an email for the volunteer director Theresa Markovich, t.markovichSPLATveilnanoscience.com as well. The letter asks for your participation in "Project Mnemosyne." On the table of contents page, the number 3 is italicized and emboldened. The next page is an organizational chart which lists another 11 potential persons of interest along with Dr. Veil and Ms. Markovich, who hold prominent positions in Veil. Also the letter O in CEO above Mr. Veil's name is italicized and emboldened. The next page gives some very broad and vague information about Project Mnemosyne. Also, a letter r is italicized and emboldened. The next page, What To Bring, is essentially a continuation of the previous one, and there is a bold and italicized lower case y. The next page outlines potential (and presumably fictitious) payment details for participants in the project and introduces Stanley Lofgren(the o has an umlaut), who also appears on the organizational chart as the accounting director of Veil Nanoscience. This time, it's a lower case w that gets the bold-italics treatment. Worth note, the table of contents was labeled as page 1, and every page has been numbered. However, since What To Bring was page 4, the payment page should be 5, however it is numbered 6. Page 5 follows the payment page, it is titled Safety Concerns, and printed wrong, or was whitewashed, whatever the IG reason, it is illegible. However the page number, 5, is bold and italicized. The next page is a certificate from the state of California licensing Veil to proceed with this particular project. This page is not numbered, however it is where page 7 would be, and the next page is numbered 8. That page gives a basic explanation of neural engineering and hints that Project Mnemosyne involves brain implants. A lower case t is bold and italicized. Next is a bullet pointed page of the goals of Project Menmosyne, with the letter e getting the usual. The final page of text reiterates Ms. Markovich's email address and telling us to contact her with any questions. Letter r bold and italicized. The last 4 pages are what I assume to be parts of the folder in which these pages were contained. We get a mission statement, a slogan/catchphrase "Guiding Humanity to its Ascension" and a timeline of Project-77, which is now Project Mnemosyne. Also worth noting is the appearance of a couple more names from that organizational chart, Dr. Donald Miller and Dr. Hope Bradenberg, who aling with Dr. Veil, were all former employees of a company known as CBALtech. The bold and italicized letters/numbers spell out "30ryw5ter" which when separating the numbers, you get 305 and "rywter" the word that appeared on the cover in blue ink.

By no means should you take me at my word and assume that's all the important information, but I scoured the thing, and that's what I found. So we got a website, an e-mail address, a baker's dozen of persons of interest and the name of a second company, along with the letter puzzle.

I started off by googling Alec Veil. Along with Veil Nanoscience, a second website came up, http://www.presidioinstitute.net which appears to be a website for a college that Dr. Veil worked for at one point. Spoilered from here on in case you want to find this stuff yourself.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
A couple interesting notes on the homepage, foremost of them a report of a minor security breach of the campus network dated Sept. 9th. Further down we find that Presidio is ranked #2 in the country for colleges to study nanotechnology. Also, dated June 14th is a post that says "We're excited to announce that world renowned technology expert Meghan Clay will be speaking at the Alanskas Center on March 14th. " which gives us another name, location and (however far in the future) date. The next link is Bulletins, and there is little of note, save the mention of the J.R. Vance center, which appears to be the bursars office or something. Under the next link, History, we learn that the Presidio Institute of Technology was founded in 1984 by the now deceased Frederick Westerfield. It was formerly called the Golden Gate College of Sciences. I'm just gonna cut and paste this paragraph because I can't quite paraphrase it. "In the 1990's, the school became famous for it's Neural Engineering program. Dr. Alec Veil, now the CEO of Veil Nanoscience, and Dr. Macolm Willard, the current director of the program, led the way as the program surpassed giant universities due to grit and determination." That gives us another name, presumably an important one since he holds the post Dr. Veil once did. The next link is Admissions, and this page is strange, not for its content, but for its lack thereof. There is a link for Tours and Open Houses, Undergraduate and Graduate Applications, and Tuition, Housing and Meal Plan rates, for 7 total links. However, all of them link to the same page, a custom "page not available" page which does give us an email, supportSPLATpresidioinstitute.net. Interesting but likely meaningless were a couple of the links. For example, the URL for the tuition link is www.presidioinstitute.net/tution.html, where as you can see tuition is misspelled. The link for housing rates lacks the .html suffix all the other links have, and the address for both the undergraduate and graduate applications is graduate.html. It's up to you to decide if these typos/miscues merit any investigation. The next link is simply a campus map which includes the aforementioned J.R. Vance and Alanskas Centers, as well as other various campus locales. There is a spot on the map which is labeled MOT 1 upside down, and does not appear in the map key. I'm gonna skip over the faculty link for the time being because that's the beef of the site and cover the last link, Student Login. There are fields for a PITPortal ID and Password. Entering a random ID (bonerboy) and password (poop) yields a popup window which reads PITPortal ID not found, so clearly we're gonna be able to access this particular page somehow, and at some point later in the game. Finally, we get to the faculty page, chock full of potential POI's. Clicking the link leads you to a list of the majors offered at Presidio. They are Applied Physics, Computer Science, Engineering, Forensics Science, Health Science, Information Technology, Nanoscience and Neural Engineering. The links for all but two of those majors (surprisingly including Nanoscience) lead to the same custom 'bad gateway' page that the admissions links led to. The two links that work are Computer Science and Neural Engineering. On each of these pages there is a current faculty link which is dead as well, but under those is a 'faculty archive' listing past faculty by the year they left the school. The Computer Science page has about 30 names listed, of those 5 or so links work. They are 5 of the first 6, with one dead link in bewteen, and give us a total of 4 new names (the link for Derek Summerfield leads to the page for Gloria Larkin.) So we get POI's Neil Hartwick, Gloria Larkin, Sharron Sharper and Clayton Grate. The info listed on their pages includes their position at Presidio, their educational background, and a personal tidbit. As for the Neural Engineering faculty, same story. 25 or so names listed, 4 working links. One is Dr. Alec Veil, obviously. The other three names are Tim Mayhall, Janine Larocca and Mary Wittman. Now, it would not surprise me at all if of these 8 names, Dr. Veil is the only relevant one, but leave no stone unturned, right? For now, I consider these people of interest. Lastly, the school calendar is listed on all of these pages, with the same events on it. The soonest event is a faculty conference on 9/28. There's also a technology expo for students on 10/7 (which I'd bet my bottom dollar will be attended by one Dr. Veil) and for some reason there are no classes on 10/19. The rest of the dates seem standard fare.

Next up I googled the name CBALtech, which is the company Dr. Veil worked for, along with two others listed on the Veil organizational chart. That yielded the web address http://www.cbaltech.com/

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Only 4 links on this one, with very little information. The home page is a short paragraph started by the hypothetical question "What if we lived in a world without disease?" It then goes on to state the company's involvement in the fight against malaria. The about page gives us a brief profile of the company, along with 2 more POI's Dr.'s Joseph and Alice Silva, founders of CBALtech. The projects link gives profiles of two very real malaria research and prevention websites which as far as I'm concerned, are only on there for immersions sake and are 100% OOG (I have a hard time believing someone has made an ARG about the realities of malaria in third world countries, but I guess anythings possible.) The important page is the contact page which gives us emails for Dr.'s Joseph and Alice Silva, josephsilvaSPLATcbaltech.com and alicesilvaSPLATcbaltech.com.

I know that's a lot to absorb right now, and I spoilered most everything in case someone wants to do this stuff on their own, but I swear, this is the wrap up for this post, a summary of what we have so far, as well as the next orders of business.

Next steps
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
For all the effort I put into Presidio and CBALtech's sites, I haven't touched Veil's yet. That's info we're obviously going to need. Also, my google of Dr. Veil provided the windfall of information on Presidio's site. We need to do the same for all the persons of interest. And finally, everyone looking to get involved should fire off an email of some sort to all the listed addresses. Try to stay in game, a.k.a. for the Presidio support email, don't be like WHO HAS THE FUCKING NANOCHIPS or something stupid, ask about the website status or something, ask the Silva's about CBALtech's work with malaria, etc. Or don't listen to me, I'm not in charge here.

Alright, that was fun. Sorry for the wall of text everyone but I think it'll help catch people up and organize us. Now it's time for a cigarette and then back to work on what looks like a pretty promising little ARG.

EDIT: Added a person of interest I failed to list.

Bio of a Dr. Joseph Silva

To my untrained eye, that particular Dr. Joseph Silva appears to be real and OOG, although it is quite the coincidence that a specialty of his is infectous
diseases and immunology. The website that bio is hosted on is DOD (US Department of Defense) and isn't fake as it has a .mil suffix, reserved for US military webpages. However, while that particular find was OOG, I agree with you 100%, this is full on ARG, the 'heightened professionalism' as you put it so well, makes me all the more excited, this I think is gonna be a special one!

Sounds cool... I just applied. Hope it isn't real because I certainly do not agree to a chip being implanted in my brain. O.O

Been at work, so I haven't had time to participate more than email Theresa, but I highly appreciate your compilation, Thermal.

I'm going to write Theresa back now, as well as the other emails we've come across. As far as the login, or the rywter/30ryw5ter, I'll run some basic deciphering on it here in a few minutes and come back with any news that I might obtain.

EDIT: Upon re-reading Theresa's reply, I noticed she wrote that "filling out the application will also have more information sent to you over the next couple weeks." I'll be putting in my application and emailing infoSPLATveilnanoscience.com to see if it gets me anywhere.

Also, to whomever mentioned that it seemed overly professional for an ARG - keep in mind, this could be viral for a TV show, a movie, a video game, or even done by a company similar to the folks at PerplexCity. But this is definitely a higher level ARG than most I've participated in. Very excited.
