Not having read the Dark Tower series, I was googling around for info on Black Thirteen...considering it's a magical object in King's mythos, I thought it was interesting that in I Like Trees it has been taken on as the name of an entity. I was wondering if anyone might have ideas as to what it means that this inanimate (I assume) creation of King's has been translated into a character for us.

Black 13 in King's mythos was, indeed, an object. But it clearly had a will of its own, and even a consciousness and a desire to dominate and pollute the minds of men.

Similar in many ways to the One Ring in JRR Tolkein's mythos:

- The ring had a goal; getting back to Sauron, and it was able to influence the minds of those who merely looked upon it.

- King's Black 13 appears to be slightly higher up the ladder of power. It had self-awareness, and seemed to act of its own accord without any specific goal, other than to twist, control, and destroy.

While King never specifically indicated that Black 13 could speak or act independently, it certainly wouldn't take a very far leap of imagination to argue that it was capable of doing so. At the very least, this BlackThir13en could represent an entity under the direct influence of the actual Black 13.

Going one step farther, Slendy could even be a physical manifestation of the object's power, or could otherwise be under its influence or answering to it for one reason or another. Anyone who's read more than a few King novels (for example, the 2-part Talisman series) knows that there are darker things than faceless men in the otherworlds of King's imagination (often answering to terrible lords seeking magical talismans, or enslaved to the talismans themselves).

There are certainly a wealth of opportunities for parallels between these mythos (mythoses?).

It's also interesting because it was heavily implied that Black 13 would be destroyed in the events of September 11, 2001. Confused

A building fell upon the area in which is was being held. Obviously it's open to interpretation, but I personally never bought into the idea it could be destroyed by such mundane means. Again comparing it to the One Ring, talismans of extraordinary power aren't often fragile or capable of being broken by blunt force.

Plus, I flat out don't want to believe Al-Qaeda were responsible for destroying Black 13. Smile

So the Black 13 could control things? Maybe this is how Slenderman is being controlled.

I did see another interpretation once that postulated that Black 13 was simply "released" or "set free" by the destruction of its storage locker. I suppose our puppetmaster could be running with that version of events.

The doyouknow clip's description on YouTube is "poetic". Any ideas on why?

EDIT: Found this. Note that "Childe" is an untested knight. Hmm.

EDIT 2, the Son of Edit: It's unlikely, given "Gunslinger Revised," but could the codes work on poetry?

Twitter post from @BlackThir13en: reads: 66 114 111 107 101 110 46 32 85 115 101 108 101 115 115 46 32 76 111 115 116 46

Sticking it through an ASCII translator gave me:
Broken. Useless. Lost.

*shudders*

No one ever did bring it up though, so kudos. I actually forgot to mention it... Razz

Yeah, I thought it wasn't that recent, but I didn't think it was mentioned earlier.

Un-ninja'd?

poetic = The Waste Land? That Greek tragedy that I forget the name of? t3hkender and I adopted a code and my original thought was to key it to The Waste Land by using a reference that works something like the book cipher. We didn't end up going in that direction, but....

Slender'd. For instances when everyone else saw it, except you, until it was too late old by then.

Thanks, yrch69, that was very helpful! So...thoughts on the most recent blog entry?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I think punxtr brings up a good point about Slender not killing Serah, while he's shown no qualms about killing other children he took. Were a bunch of kids taken and some proven to be expendable?

So, let's brainstorm once again on the numbers.

Quote:
09/02/11
0030104 0030305 0050905

09/07/11
0150601 0150602 0150708 0150709

09/11/11
0262201 0273810 0262202 0272702

With the way the numbers sequence, it appears each number is broken into three segments: AAA BB CC

Assuming all three are coded the same way, the values are:

AAA BB CC

003 01 04
003 03 05
005 09 05

015 06 01
015 06 02
015 07 08
015 07 09

026 22 01
027 38 10
026 22 02
027 27 02

AAA
- Highest value 27
- Lowest value 3
- Evens and odds
- No common factors
- Values exceed 26, cannot represent direct alpha substitution
- Values exceed 7, cannot represent book # in DT series

BB
- Highest value 38
- Lowest value 01
- Evens and odds
- No common factors
- Values exceed 26, cannot represent direct alpha substitution
- Values exceed 7, cannot represent book # in DT series

CC
- Highest value 10
- Lowest value 01
- Evens and odds
- No common factors
- Values exceed 7, cannot represent book # in DT series

Hypotheses
Possibly a book code (based on B13 clue "Gunslinger Revised is the key" -- GUNSLINGER was also the key to another code, so this may be a smokescreen)
