I'd peg it to the Slender Man Mythos' version of the Grandfather Clause. We often take for granted just how novel and influential MH was to the mythos in general. The first YouTube entries started appearing just over a week after Slendy's debut on Something Awful. In a sense MH has become the definitive Slendy-centric video series.

In a similar sense, JAFool has been widely acknowledged as the first major Slendy blog. While it's obvious to us now that it has nothing to do with MH, we didn't know that back in July 2009. Most likely the JAFool entries in the wiki are still there because no editor's had the time to delete them, but personally I don't mind keeping them around if only for history's sake.

I was thinking about the potential endings of Marble Hornets the other day. It occurred to me that, given the narrative structure, the most likely possible endings require a victory or at least survival. Of course, with other characters in play, such as totheark, a final entry could be uploaded even if Jay meets his demise. However, I am not a huge fan of that idea, because I don't think it makes sense for totheark to have the final victory. I came up with an idea more like this:

At the end of the 2nd-to-last entry, Jay describes plans for some future undertaking (like, maybe he thinks he's discovered a way to stop The Operator, maybe he's trying to rescue someone from The Operator, something like that) and says he's really uncertain as to how it will go.

About a month passes.

A video is uploaded entitled "Final Entry," which is entirely unedited (no title cards, cuts only occur when the camera would have been turned off and on again). In it, the events foretold in the previous entry go horribly wrong. Jay encounters The Operator, and, although it is not certain exactly what happens, it doesn't look good. After the struggle, we see that the camera is left on the ground and both Jay and The Operator are gone. Footage taken by the camera on the ground continues for about 30 seconds.

The video cuts to footage in a bedroom, where a man we've never seen before has started recording. He tells us that he found the camera in Rosswood Park a couple weeks ago (or some other significant location we may see later) with instructions attached in case it is found. He says that he still doesn't quite know what to make of it. At first he thought it was a prank or some weird internet game. He even considered taking it to the police, but he figured they wouldn't care. He says that he ultimately decided to follow the instructions given, which included reading the note out loud on camera. With a shrug and a "here goes nothing," he begins to read:

"To Whom It May Concern:

If this camera is found, please follow these instructions EXACTLY:
1. DO NOT WATCH THE FOOTAGE ON THIS CAMERA.
2. If there is room left on the tape, record yourself reading this note out loud. If there is no room, rewind the tape with enough time to record the message.
3. Transfer the contents of the tape to your computer. LEAVE THE ROOM SO YOU DO NOT SEE THE FOOTAGE.
4. Upload the entire video to Youtube, using the username and password on the back of this note. Name the video "Final Entry." DO NOT WATCH THE VIDEO OR ANY OTHERS ON THIS YOUTUBE CHANNEL.

After these steps are completed, destroy the tape and delete the video from your computer. Feel free to sell the camera.

Thanks,
Jay"

The man concludes, "I guess that's it."

As he reaches to turn off the camera, visual tearing appears at the bottom of the screen.

The camera turns off, and the video ends.

That... actually isn't the worst thing I've read on here. In fact, I might go as far as to say that I would actually enjoy this as a possible ending to the series. There are a lot of endings I think I'd enjoy more than this one, but if Troy and Joseph decided this was how the series was to end... I think I could accept that. There's resolution, to a degree. Enough loose ends left untied that fans still have things to obsess over and discuss after it's over (but not too many that it pisses off the whole community to no end).

My only big issue - that note better have Jay's fucking last name. That's one loose end that (in this ending) would be unforgivable to omit. Razz

Nice work mag3ba, that's actually a pretty interesting theory for an ending. Very Happy

DO FUCKING WANT.
That's seriously the best ending I've read here so far. Great work.

This is EXACTLY what I was talking about when I said that I was sure more literary critics were hovering around here, somewhere. Nice work, mag, and thank you for showing me that I'm not the only one who's trying to look at the narrative structure of this whole piece.
