 		Ok I finally got some e-mails from this dude. I sent that same message, close/only/counts...

The subject lines seem random, stuff with my name, some thing I posted on a forum a long time ago (he must be looking up our e-mails), and rot in hell.

The messages look like this:

Also, I think it's funny that he keeps sending us more of the same code, like that is somehow going to help us decode it? Laughing

You're 100% right, I broke that very lock box by over stuffing it and locking it. The top lip is only held in place by plastic pegs. A swift slap with a hammer or a pry with a screw driver will snap the plastic, then the lock has nothing to lock onto.

The footer message is always misspelled. Last time newshound had one letter changed, this time com is xom. Possibly a hint at a substitution cipher?

The ⌀ can be "empty set", diameter, or a zero in linguistics.

I'm working on the basis that this is a Polybius Sqaure which is a classic cryptographic technique where letters and numbers identify rows and columns. The key to decrypting it is that one needs to know the dimensions (e.g. number columns and rows), the orientation (letters are vertical or horizontal) and the pad (i.e. the letters that fill in the columns and rows).

So far I've tried all shifts of a standard alphabetical offset (A-Z, 0-9) on a 6x6 square with both vertical and horizontal displays. I've also looked at using the term "ALBERTA" as a seed for the key. Based on the assumption that the end character is not in the normal alphabet code I've tried using "_" and "-" as the possible terminating characters.

I've emailed the message sender, with a couple of the messages here, but I havn't heard anything back yet.

My next set of things to look at will be to try a 4x6 and 6x4 grid with ABCD and 1-6. Since the 24≠26 ⌀ might be read that we should use 24 letters in the key, not the usual 5x5 or 6x6 configurations. From the trivia answers list a quick scan seems to indicate that there is no "X" or "Q" in the list.

Other random things I've tried are drawing lines on a map between all the various locations (doesn't reveal anything to me). Various image filters to try to get the letters / numbers off of the poster in the background of the image. Various image filters to try to see if there is writing hidden in the trivia note.

 		I think we have 2 different clues that the number of columns in the grid is 4. The original cipher was broken into 4 columns, and the image he sent me is broken into 4 columns of text.

I think the 24 DNE 26 might also suggest 6 rows, so that it totals to 24. But I have tried a lot of 6x4 grids and come up with nothing, so who knows.

I think I forgot to mention this before, but there was another cipher in the last e-mail I got that decoded to "unwilling to die."

I found a poem from the Zodiac killer with this in the title:
