Update from the field

Sorry to intrude, but I don't know which threads people are reading.

Melissa asked someone in the field to relay this information to the rest of the crew:

1. There will be a reward for the picture with the most rank and file crew members in it.
2. All that the rank-and-file pictures require is salutes at a payphone.
3. Melissa wants to bring Dana into the fold. She said that Dana would respond well to kindness.

I sent in a request for a new axon, thusly:

Code:
Capability to receive incoming transmissions confirmed

Number:  (626) 356-9091
Physical Location: 34.148405   -118.131707

160 N. Lake Ave., Pasadena, CA, 91107, USA

Visual confirmation:

with the pic after that. Anyone in or near the San Gabriel valley might have a slightly easier time getting to the spot(a Ralph's just off the 210) than to the Glendale or Burbank axons.

No confirmation as of yet, though I'm not really expecting one.

Troublecat, I think you need to start getting the Hollywood axon again. I've gone out there the last two weeks with no luck. I'm pretty sure I'm at the right phone going off your description. Should be the one just off Tito Puente's star.

To add insult to injury, I didn't get pictures of anyone saluting next to the phones. I thought it would be fairly easy considering the amount of foot traffic in the area, but I swear I was there during "no English" hour or something.

This coming Tuesday will be depressing. I thought about submitting an axon near work, but the nearby public phone bank has been disconnected by the construction crew working in the building next door. And although I made the crew, I forgot to send my phone number until after I saw the new list, so there's the possibility that that won't get up in time either for a call. The worst is that I will be in meetings all day so won't be able to get to the Santa Monica axon again. (Go Lt. Belle!) Plus I can't even coordinate or follow the proceedings. Sad I guess I have little comfort in that it isn't a puzzle day, I like those!

I feel bad if I can't help or at least participate. Sad

Go Team LA!

Missed my axon, the one chance I get to answer one and I f it up. O well back to work and good luck to the rest of you.

Hey, no worries. It's not your "one chance," either: there are still two or three weeks of axon hunting left, methinks. I see that same phone is ringing early again this Tuesday, for example.

I finally got to that axon (Burbank Airport Hilton) and the Glendale Galleria axon on Thursday. They were recordings, of course. But something odd happened when I tried to hit my favorite axon, outside the Burbank AMC Theater, on Wednesday evening. I finished up in Lancaster at 4:46 p.m. The axon is due to ring at 5:42 p.m., and I'm about 73 miles north of it. I think, "Hey, I can do that!" I speed like a lunatic, and end up reaching the Burbank offramp of I-5 at 5:40 p.m.

...where I proceed to sit at the red light as the clock changes to 5:41, and then to 5:42...

Once the light changes, and the people in front of me begin moving with excruciating slowness, I drive to the theater, cursing everyone in my way. I'm sitting there, trying to make a Censored left turn, sure the clock is going to click over to 5:43 any second now...

I make an extremely risky and technically illegal left-turn in front of oncoming traffic, ignore the squealing tires, drive about ten more feet, slam the car into park, and leap out, leaving it still running and blocking the driveway with the keys in the ignition. I charge over to the phone, pick it up, and...

Nothing.

No dial tone.

No Melissa.

Not even dead air.

Just...nothing.

My first thought: "Aww, nuts. The phone's broken." I say "Hello?" a couple of times, but people are starting to honk, so I hang up, trudge back to my car, and park. I trudge back over to the phone to check it out...

...and there's a dial tone.

Oh, Censored . I think I blew it somehow. This impression is confirmed on Wednesday morning, when, at the Burbank Airport Hilton axon, there is definitely a second or three of lag between when I say "Hello?" and when Melissa starts talking. Crums. I think I hung up on her. Oh, well. I guess that means I'll have to hit it that evening (Thursday). Which I try to do...

...and the phone doesn't ring.

I checked the recipe5 page, and the two axons I successfully hit Thursday morning have changed from "cancelled" to "success," but that one hasn't. So here's my question: We know Melissa keeps calling all week if no one answers the phone. Does anyone know whether Melissa keeps calling if someone answers, but she doesn't make a successful connection?

I think I broke my favorite axon. Sad

I believe that she does Shad0.

The first week we had the axon at the UCI Engineering Tower I gave the wrong answer. Embarassed

I was able to go back the next day and make it hot.

Got this from Melissa today:

Quote:
Solider,
You are commended for your resourcefulness in gathering this data for me.
I will attempt to construct a communication channel to the axon you
have submitted.
If I am successful, you will see the GPS coordinates 34.148405 -118.133707
listed on the next confirmed broadcast schedule.
Excellent work, Richard!

/me is a happy soldier, /me is. Smile

p.s. anyone who wants to try for that axon and needs directions, I've got 'em.

That's the Ralph's grocery store in Pasadena, California, right? Southeast corner of Lake and Walnut? Exit I-210 at Lake Avenue, head south, and it's on the left? Congratulations and good job!

That be it exactly. I haven't seen what time it's gotten assigned, yet, but I can tell anyone who goes that it's the left-most phone.

It didn't ring again yesterday. Sad

I'll try one last time this evening, but I think I really broke it this time. Sad Sad

Santa Monica Axon

Hi, I think I'm going to be heading out to the 10:42 Santa Monica axon tomorrow.

I missed the whole "team-forming" phase of the axons during the last two weeks, is it too late to join one? Is there an LA team?

I'm a bit confused as to what I should do at the phone tomorrow if Melissa asks for my unit... I've been reading the posts, and have done searches, but it seems like there's a lot going on off the forums, so I can't quite follow what people are doing. Plus I won't see the forums for an hour before that, so I'm worried the passphrase will change while I'm heading out there.

Anyway, if anyone else is planning on heading out to Santa Monica, that'd be great. I'll be bringing a camera and cell phone!

Thanks in advance.

Heads-up to the Claremont crew: we're back in the game!

http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=88518#88518

The call's coming in at 11:50 PDT, during the "immigration" block.

There doesn't seem to be any organized LA team, which is pretty unfortunate. I haven't run into a single person since I've started going out to axons, which surprised me.

I'd head out to Santa Monica tomorrow too, but I have class then, which means I'll be missing the first two UCLA axons too. If anyone else wants to go for them, the "acme" links off darkforge's spreadsheet are pretty much spot on. The first one's on Dickson Court, right off the intersection, and is a bank of two Verizon phones. The second one is in Ackerman (union), and it's on what I believe the bulding calls the "first" floor, which is actually two floors up. It's by the bathrooms just around the corner from the pretzel place and is all alone.

Yeah, from looking at the squad list it doesn't look like there's an LA group. So if I get a live call, should I start a new squad? "Team Los Angeles"???
