[OT] Marble Hornets card game
Working on a design for a card game based on Marble Hornets

(I hope this is in the right area to post; if not, please move this where it needs to go.)

I'm a board and card game designer, and I'm currently working on a card game based on Marble Hornets. The basic premise of the game is that you get a stack of cards representing various recovered tapes, and you can either watch some of these tapes on your turn or conduct an investigation. To investigate, you need to turn in a matching set of clues, which lets you draw a number of investigation cards, representing tapes that you have filmed. These cards will either allow you to draw more recovered tapes, or will provide you with points. The goal is to be the first to get a certain number of points, of course.

I have a basic design down, but I have not yet printed out the cards to do playtesting.

Here are some sample cards:

Ths is an example of the back of a Recovered Tape card. The number is what 'level' the card is; higher level cards are worth more, or let you draw more cards during an investigation.

An example of a Recovered Tape. This is a level 2 card, and counts as a green clue. Normally, to begin an investigation you either need to turn in three cards of the same type, or one of each type.

An example of an Investigation Tape. This card counts as a green clue, but also allows the player to draw two level 3 Recovered Tapes and add it to their stack.

Some cards will have the Operator on them; these cards have different effects depending on when they were drawn or viewed. When a tape is watched that has the Operator, it counts as a wild card clue. If the Operator is turned up during an investigation, it creates a blackout situation, where the cards in the investigation are placed face down and have to be recovered before they can be viewed and used. This can also happen if too many Horror cards are turned up (the Operator just counts as an automatic blackout).

Like I said, I haven't begun playtesting yet (I usually playtest my game designs at a local gaming store that has open gaming tables), but hopefully I will get the chance to do so soon.

Thoughts?

This looks awesome. I've never been a fan of card games, but this looks like it'll turn out good. There's not a whole lot of things you can base off of Marble Hornets (and still be cool), but a card game seems like one thing that will work well.

Seems kinda neat. Are you really gonna just use screenshots or are you thinking about having someone do artwork based on the entries?

No offense, but IMO it looks a little... tacky(?) with direct screenshots.

I'm gonna have to disagree (respectfully of course) I personally think the concept cards there are pretty sweet looking, esp. for a first draft. Now I've never dabbled in these kinda card games, with the notable exception of MLB Showdown which I spent literally every free penny on from the ages of 11-14. That being said it's a very different kind of game, with literally hundreds of players cards, which in this sense you can read as 'characters'. My question is this. A card game would for the most part have to be competitive. So if you have two people going up against each other, who is who. Is one person J and one Alex? Are they both J and competing to be the better J? You've piqued my interest, I'd like to hear a little more about what you have in mind for the actual 'object' of the game.

Maybe we could see a side-by-side of a couple of drawn cards versus screenshots?
I think tacky is the wrong word, but I just mean that the realistic screen shot looks out of place with the cartoony tapes.

Also, I've played TCG's, but I think this is more like a Fluxx kinda game, right? Where you start with all the cards and they're dealt randomly to players with a single deck?
In that case, I think it'd be as if there are 2 Jay's.

Most of the art's temporary until I decide what will be the right way to go. If I stay with screenshots, then I'll probably want more realistic stuff to go on the rest of it. If I stay with the drawn stuff, then I'll turn it around and make the images drawn as well. This design is really more of a quick draft so that I can get playtesting done before committing to a design.

Also, if I want to actually make this, I would obviously need permission from the Marble Hornets creators. If I don't get that, then I'd probably re-tool the game to be merely inspired by MH, not include direct parts of it.

It's not a collectable card game, which means everyone draws from the same decks. That technically means there's more than one J, but it's not meant to follow the MH continuity perfectly anyway. That's part of the reason it might have to go the "inspired by" route anyway.

I like what I see so far. Could do with a little more variety in the types of cards, though.
