Interesting. I could definitely see a blog using that as an origin story, like in Marble Hornets with the story of the criminals executed by being tied to trees and left to die.

I dislike any origin stories that imply he was once a human...

Old God figures FTW!

This.

I prefer to think of Slendy as a tree spirit of sorts, myself. A scary, child eating tree spirit. :3

can't he be both? a kind of eldritch/jesus? or human fodder that somehow provided energy for an elder god to manifest in somewhat sometimes physical form? The possibilities are just endless...

Eldritch Jesus? I can't see that. Currently leaning towards Slendy being a pure eldritch horror/elder god/what have you. Any ties to humanity would just water down the scariness for me.

Marble Hornets handled it excellently with a multiple choice back story. Slender Man could be one of the stretched criminals, he could be one of the trees themselves, he could have been the "god" that the criminals were being sacrificed to, or completely unrelated to the provided back story in the first place.

Victor Surge once gave an interview about how he came up with the idea for Slender Man. He said he just threw a bunch of things that scared him together and went from there.

If you're looking for a more in-universe answer, that would be different for every story.
