[ADVERTISING] minotauragency.com
Nothing really to see here.

I received this e-mail yesterday from theminotauragencyATgmailDOTcom:

Quote:
Hi Brian,

How are things at TD? Swing by and say hi at Minotauragency.com. If you can solve our labyrinth, you'll be one of the first to know who we are and what we do.

Best,

Your friends at Minotaur

Firstly, it's strange that they know I work at TD. Secondly, we did a google search and found copy-pastes of the same message into various casting searches and Craigslist pages (sans the TD comment, of course). Some of the Craigslist ads make a "string theory" joke.

When you go to the page, there are three images: there's a riddle, a picture of a ball of string, and a code. There was nothing helpful in the website's source code.

I'm quite new to all of this. Any thoughts?

I'm in but it's game over for me at this point. I'm not good at puzzles. Looks like I'll have to wait until someone solves this before I can start playing.

Try adding the first and last number in each row together. Each number represents a letter. Follow what number is what letter in the alphabet.

If it spells something, you may be in luck. If not, try it anyways as it could be the rest of the link. Type it into the end of the URL to test it.

If that doesn't work, try multiplying.

If you can figure out what the riddle is describing that gives you a clue to solve the code.

Hint-
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
it's describing a game board

OMG I feel dumb. I still don't know the code per se, but i can't BELIEVE I missed that about the riddle!!!

RIDDLE ANSWER:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
scrabble

Now why we don't have the code yet:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
In the english, original edition of scrabble, there are 10 possible values for letters, and frequency of letters between 1 & 12 - "E" having the most available tiles at 12 with 1 point value. {copied from wiki below}
2 blank tiles (scoring 0 points)
1 point: E ×12, A ×9, I ×9, O ×8, N ×6, R ×6, T ×6, L ×4, S ×4, U ×4
2 points: D ×4, G ×3
3 points: B ×2, C ×2, M ×2, P ×2
4 points: F ×2, H ×2, V ×2, W ×2, Y ×2
5 points: K ×1
8 points: J ×1, X ×1
10 points: Q ×1, Z ×1

Since the numbers INSIDE the parenthesis go up to 10, and the numbers outside go up to 12, it would make sense that 12(1) would be "E" HOWEVER it doesn't work. Reason: the number combo 2(10) appears 48 times, yet there is no letter substitution for that code.

If we used the newer "super scrabble" which would allow for a 2(10), then there would be no code which starts with 1

Here's a list of the number combinations and their frequencies:

Code - Frequency
2(10) - 48
12(1) - 36
4(3) - 29
9(1) - 27
9(2) - 26
6(2) - 24
6(1) - 21
6(3) - 17
8(1) - 15
2(2) - 12
4(1) - 11
2(4) - 10
2(5) - 10
4(2) - 10
3(1) - 9
2(8 )- 7 <---(had to add a space between the 8 and the ) to prevent it from being a smiley face, lol)
2(9) - 6
4(4) - 6
2(6) - 5
2(1) - 4
2(3) - 3
2(7) - 2
1(2) - 1

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Another point against the Scrabble letter frequency(point value) theory is that no tiles in the game have a point value of 6, 7, or 9, yet those numbers show up in parenthesis in the riddle.

Substitution:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
first number is frequency, number in parenthesis is the "n'th" letter with that frequency. we have to include blank pieces, or spaces. 2(10)=space

I'm too lazy to decode the entire text though xd

I'm a bit more than put off. Brian, is NOT looking for a new job and has NO reason to get head hunted to a freaking AD agency.... Yes, this was creative, but it was a HUGE waste of our time. But hey, they got free advertising out of it. I feel like a spammer.

ETA: enaxor - we were just about to post the solve when you posted the key. LOVE that they had a spelling error... So professional
