The two seasons have obviously felt different. Season one was a mixture of things, with entries all over the place, in terms of the timeline. There were no continuing narrative threads to tie various entries together (well, maybe some narrative threads, but not many). Most of season one was comprised of footage from Alex's tapes.

Season two started off in the "present timeline", and eventually switched over to the tapes J found in his safe in the hotel. Since Entry 33, we've been seeing footage from the tapes, footage that fills in the seven-month gap since Entry 26. There have been longer narrative threads, with several consecutive entries forming a single narrative thread. There's more dialogue, the story is more developed, characters more developed, and a lot more to discuss and speculate about.

Season one was primarily all about these mysterious, perhaps paranormal characters lurking and creeping about, and main characters visiting abandoned and mysterious locations. Season two is more character-driven, with the Operator having not so pronounced a presence.

Very good way of putting it. I'd argue that there was just as much to discuss/speculate about in Season 1, but there is a lot more continuity with what's being discussed because of the narrative structure in Season 2.

Both seasons have their share of creeps and scares, but the scares in both seasons are of different natures. Season two was about the enigma that is the Operator (and Timasky, to an extent). Season two is about human characters trying to figure things out, and one apparently having an agenda of his own. There is still a mystery, but it's focused on the human characters, with the enigmatic characters in the background.

^That last line (emphasis mine).

I think, formal/genre/theme changes aside, this is why the shift from one season to the next is so natural to me, and maybe not so much for others. In the first season, we had two clear, parallel protagonists (Alex & Jay) and two antagonists (Operator and TTA/Masky, respectively). Man v. Supernatural. This season, we have one clear protagonist (Jay), a character previously thought to be good who now appears to be an antagonist (Alex), a supernatural presence whose motives are still unknown but appear to be antagonistic (Operator), and a potentially good or bad force influencing both sides (TTA/Masky/Hoody). Man v Man, Man v Supernatural, and a little bit of Supernatural v Supernatural.

True, it's a lot more complex, and you can argue very easily that it's a pretty huge change. I agree, but the way I see it, it felt like it evolved into what it is now quite naturally. Alex wasn't 'bad' when Season 2 started. When he appeared, we were on his side... and then we put a human face on Masky... and Alex dropped that rock. Suddenly, pretentious and disturbed film student Alex became angry and possibly psychotic manhunter Alex, and as the season has gone on, we've seen pieces of why that's happened. The Operator is influencing something in Alex, and it seems TTA/Masky/Hoody want Jay to find out what is happening and why.

^ That's what's got me so hooked into this season. (And SO FREAKIN' PSYCHED to see what the hell is on that damn tape!) Very Happy

*Edit: And I'll note in addition to all that, that I fully expect S3 to start drawing clear lines again, between Jay and Alex, between TTA and whoever/whatever they're against, between the Operator and... well everybody. Razz Season 2 is a transition to what, I hope and expect, is gonna be a pretty explosive final act to this story. Smile

I agree; the scares have been quite different in S2. In S1, the individual entries were more frightening, but the audience sat a bit further back from the action. We were mainly watching Jay-the-vague-narrator watch past events that had happened to another person we didn't know. In S2, Jay's gotten personally involved to a much greater extent, and we've come to know both him and Alex better. So while the S2 entries have fewer individual scares, we're closer now. The stakes have been raised. Even watching events of the lost seven months is a more intimate experience, since they happened to Jay-the-real-person and have a direct correlation to what he's experiencing in the present. For me, the overall story is scarier now. Plus, individual events that may not have been scary in S1 cause a different kind of fear in S2. Alex losing his temper with Jay in #47 is significantly more frightening than Alex losing his temper with Seth in #9. They're both saying the same thing--Alex has changed--but #47 implies a lot more as well. That's a direct result of developing the characters and plot in S2.

Re: Season 1 or Season 2 - which do you prefer?
I think we're late enough in season 2 to start discussing this.

Can't agree that the scares aren't as good. #29 is as good as any "Alex roams around the woods and encounters the Operator" entry from season 1, with the aid of unsettling video and audio effects. #40 is better than anything in season 1 thanks to the added tension of the Operator being extremely close and approaching off-camera while Jay lies panicking on the ground. #43 starts the same but then gets even better as Alex starts walking towards the Operator. To me, that's a lot more existential than the pretty tame #14 which makes the mistake of showing how the Operator walks. The movements are pretty stiff, but he loses a bit of his mystique because you can see how he does them. The Operator is scariest when you can't see (all of) him, and #14 breaks that rule.

Oh, and there's also the psychological terror of #32 (Jessica's distorted voice and glances back into her room make me panic), Masky's slow then rapid attack in #33 (although it can't beat the stalking in #19), enttry 37 (I refuse to watch this again) and some solid jump scares in the vein of #26 (#44, #46, #49). I guess the fact that they stopped being subtle about Slendy doesn't cut it for some, but the silent clips have never seemed exceptionally threatening to me.

Fix'd. Dr. Girlfriend would've probably been more appropriate, but Mol and I are both redheads--same shade, too. Now let the slashfic commence! Laughing

Shocked D-does that mean I have to get really good at art really fast so I can create the DVD case design for Season 2...? *shudder of combined fear and excitement*
