I wanted to revisit this thread for a number of reasons.
One, I found this book in the library yesterday and could not remember where I had heard of it before. And two, to anyone who has read it, can you clear something up for me? I am a christian through and through so as such, I personally choose not to dabble in anything occultish. What is the deal with the house? Is it posessed? Or is it a Dark Water kind of thing where it is a metaphor for inner struggles and demons?

Theories abound.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Some say that the entire story was the creation of Johnny's mother; something she created for him. If that is the case, then since she's mentally disturbed I'd say the 'metaphor for inner demons' choice would be correct.

Indeed, there is no "right" answer to what the house is. Personally, I believe it does have a "sentience", but not a mature one. I think the mind of the house is like the mind of a child, that wants attention and to be fussed over but gets irritable and cranky when it doesn't get it's own way.

Congratulations, you have intrigued me and I shall no doubt be buying this book soon, even if it'll just mean my backlog gets even longer...

I'm going to have to re-re-re-read it again once more.

What's the actual significance of the editions?
Was it like Cathy's book with the extra pieces or something?

Wow coffeegirl you really dragged this up from the depths. The last post on this thread was made almost 6 years ago!
Regardless, I love the book also. My copy is covered in post-its and it very frayed at the edges from too many hours spent pouring through the pages looking for codes.
If you search for the HoL forums theres a lot of info, and stuff is kinda still being discovered.

I have to say that this looks good. I'm not much of a reader anyway, but like the weird and wonderful ones!
(As an aside, anyone into graphic novels like Watchmen, etc?)
