Player Etiquitte and general nervousness?

I know that an ARG is meant to be interactive, but I've always held off doing the interactive stuff because I'm... I don't know... like I'm nervous I'll break some rule or something. I've been reading the trailheads for a few weeks, and am really interested in Gishwhes [which is apparently at some sort of standstill?] and Vladimir Sirin, but both of those you start with e-mails. Is it okay to just email them and see what they say? What would you say? Or would you just jump in at the most recent finding and go from there? Embarassed

I guess I should try my hand at easier ones first, but I really like the interactive stuff, like THESEVENTRIALSOFHABIT or geocaching stuff, so I want to try... something.
