Keep in mind that Durga's real name is probably Melissa - Durga is just the name Jersey came up with for her, after all.

which is slightly odd. Durga? Is there something behind that name other then the goddess Durga? it just seems an odd name to pick from thin air. Dunno
anyhow, back to the regularly scheduled spec:
it does sound like it was Kinkle getting shot twice. although Monster Ann might have taken some lead in the next moments, ending the .wav on the end of Kinkle follows perfectly.

i'd really really like to see what's keeping the connection alive, other than "the artifact". Is there a giant blue swirly wormhole vortex of swirliness above Jersey's house? is the harddrive in the ilovebees.com server positioned at the exact 34.777 degree angle to the ddr memory to open a temporal nexus? maybe there's a giant time-travelling carrier pigeon made of dark matter that ferries messages back and forth!

anyway, back on topic:
Durga is the only Melissa component that seems rational, but she's also the only component that has no memories

Melissa: all function, all memories*, no emotions
SP: no function, limited locked memories, high emotions
Durga: proper functionality, no memories, proper emotions

*some memories have been purged by the SPDR due to corruption, but she still has more than the other 2 parts

I think we should really start acknowledging that Durga did not simply "land" on Jersey's PC by accident. I think it's very clear that she was purposely SENT to Jersey's PC. Learning why she was sent--as well as by who-- will explain a whole lot of the mystery going on.

Here's the key facts:

1. Melissa was the A.I. for the Apocalypso.
2. Jersey's Dad, Jason a.k.a. The Castaway, is aboard the Apocalypso and befriends Melissa.
3. Durga ends up on Jersey's PC near the same time something knocks the Apocalypso out of slipstream along with Earth's comm channels.
4. Melissa has a fragile connection with a process named Durga in the future.

Shad0 had it confirmed by Melissa that Jason Morelli was the Castaway. It seems like this happens a lot - the most likely spec ends up being the answer to Melissa's question of the week. Nice game design.

So yes - the SPEC I draw from the above is:
1) Mr. Morelli Sr. had fully intended to get Melissa onto his son's computer in order to get more information to Herzog, whom he was working for.

2) Even he didn't know what the artifact would do when it pulsed, so it was an accident when a copy of Melissa went to Jersey's computer, but forgot its name in the process, and a copy that DID remember its name went hurtling into the past, and like Heinlein's relativistic twins, they can still think at each other.

3) Melissa DID manage to decode the message on the artifact during the return trip, or make a good guess, but the decrypt was of course top secret, and at this point that memory is LOCKED - or she can't put her finger on it - or deleted. (Hey SP, can we try the locked-room puzzle?)

4) Our 2004 edition of Melissa is running on Pentium-equivalent hardware, for gosh sakes, and I'm surprised she can even speak coherently with all that "sand" in her system. But they build them tough in 2547, I guess. Or she's stealing process cycles from Durga's host.

5) 'Durga' thinks she's going rampant because she is getting impressions of the SP bumping around the castle, but she might feel much better if the cross-time link ever goes down. Or incomplete.

6) If Durga ever talks directly to Kamal, it'll be stressful. But at least she won't be lying to herself, and may be able to reconcile the SP side of her personality with the main one.

That's a great summary of my thoughts on the matter.

Now, I want to know who "locked" those sections of the memory. If it was intended for ONI only, they must be the ones with the codes.

But if Jersey's father was the one who locked up that data before sending the AI to his son, he might have used a code they would both understand.

Anyone feel like singing a few jazz standards?

Oh yes, and everything I post is just speculation to get the gears of you other, smarter minds turning.

Hmm. Interesting thought...do we have any support other than "Stormy Weather"?

I wonder what would happen if we tried to transmit> !master-sector to get a message to Durga? Tell her something along the lines of, you are not crazy... we have interecepted these messages and have been instructed to pass them along.

Well, we still need assurance that it really was Jersey's dad who sent the AI to him, and not just Durga looking up a familiar name from the ship's manifests when she arrived.

She says she didn't choose Jersey, but she also couldn't ask what her own name was.

There's been an inaccuracy in this thread that needs clearing up:

There *IS* previous canonical reference to Rampancy in the Haloverse. In Halo 1, shoot some of your fellow soldiers a few times. Odds are, you'll get the quote:

"He's gone rampant!!"

Since the MC is techincally a cyborg and not an AI, it's hard to figure out exactly what they mean by that. I can offer a few possibilities:

1) My favorite, which is that they believe Cortana has gone rampant and that she is influencing MC somehow, or that
2) Rampancy is somehow possible in cyborgs through their machine parts, or through the connection between the machine and the organic bits, or
3) They're referring to some other kind of rampancy applicable to cyborgs.

or, it could just be a grammatical coincidence...

Webster's Revised Unabridged wrote:
rampant

adj 1: unrestrained and violent; "rampant aggression" 2: rearing on left hind leg with forelegs elevated and head usually in profile; "a lion rampant" [syn: rampant(ip), rearing]

Possibly, considering that "rampant" is probably a pretty well-known technical term for when an AI essentially goes crazy, it's become slang for "crazy" as well, kind of like "bonkers."

Possible, but you know it would be a HUGE coincidence, and with Bungie there aren't a whole lot of unintentional ones.

I'm leaning towards either Phaedra's explanation, or #1.

well, that's what I mean... rampant being a regular word in the future, nothing to do with AI's... he's just gone crazy or mad... we do have quite a few technical terms with layperson meanings we use today as well... quite possible...

so it could be any explanation... <shrug> I'm on the fence, but as it doesn't bother me or pique my curiosity, I'm quite happy sitting on the beam

Just thought I'd clear this up, since I recently had cause to undertake casual study of MPD: MPD and DID are related, but different, conditions. Rather than type a post long enough to rival some of Phaedra's, I'll just link to this web page which explains it.
