As I am unsure whether this is an insult or a gentle ribbing, I'll let it pass without further comment. Wink

Correction: your expert is of the opinion that they are separate yet related disorders. And, of course, of the opinion that they are legitimate diagnoses.

The website is lists two authors and its primary purpose appears to be to promote their book. It is not run by a psychiatric association, a university, or any other recognized research institution.

So, while I'm not going to judge the authors' credentials without having read their books, at first glance, I'd be wary.

In any case, it's not authoritative enough to clear anything up. Quite the contrary, in fact, it just adds another opinion to the stew.

There's been an inaccuracy in this thread that needs clearing up:

There *IS* previous canonical reference to Rampancy in the Haloverse. In Halo 1, shoot some of your fellow soldiers a few times. Odds are, you'll get the quote:

"He's gone rampant!!"

Since the MC is techincally a cyborg and not an AI, it's hard to figure out exactly what they mean by that. I can offer a few possibilities:

1) My favorite, which is that they believe Cortana has gone rampant and that she is influencing MC somehow, or that
2) Rampancy is somehow possible in cyborgs through their machine parts, or through the connection between the machine and the organic bits, or
3) They're referring to some other kind of rampancy applicable to cyborgs.

Or it could be that most of the Marines have the same mindset as JJ about the Spartan-IIs... namely that they are barely human. If they're believed to be "barely human", then they must be "mostly something-else"... AI?

Is it possible Durga has already gone rampant, the artifact is an AI bifurcator, and someone using it to keep Durga normal by dividing her into smaller parts cause the time warp? Seems to me the best way to deal with a rampant, overcomplicated AI would be computer mitosis, split one mother AI into two or more daughters AIs.

Hmm...maybe she's not just split in two, but genuinely shattered, and there are thousands of daughter durga's running around that we haven't seen yet.

There is nothing that says a rampant Halo AI goes insane. They don't. Rampancy for them is when they start thinking in ever tighter circles. They pretty much go catatonic with no hope of recovery.

As for the marines and suchin Halo 1 saying the Chief's gone rampant, that is a term used now for exaclt that type of behavior.

so they go totally meta? as in, they can't stop thinking about thinking

the word "rampant" is pretty common with the usage "run rampant", often used by my mother to describe me when i was 3................

[SPEC] Melissa, Durga, and SP... Rampant?

So here's a fresh view from someone who just got involved. Like I just listened to all the wavs twice in the past four days for the first time.

Durga is either afraid her basis personality is coming out, or she actually is that personality, shucked loose from her AI over-personality.

Melissa is obviously an AI over-personality and the SP is her basis personality in this time.

Some facts I think pushed aside:
1) Durga is shut off from knowing some things about herself.
2) The Apocalypso was catastrophically shunted out of slipstream, still leaving a mojority of her crew alive (i.e. Her captain killed by a bus, and the guy J2 gives a ride to with Jan.)

I think this could mean a few things. Durga and the SP are the same thing. They are both basis- personalities for AIs. Perhaps they are even the same personality, seperated by time. Melissa, either the Apocalypso's or the ILB personality would have wanted to get the artifact to the Navy's upper echelons.

What if that was the plan? Melissa, knowing that the Artifact oould be dangerous, but commanded to follow her programming was delivering a very possibly dangerous device to Earth. Durga/SP breaks free of her "glass coffin" to sabotage the venture. Melissa's compassion for her crew manages to turn the possible destruction of the ship and crew into a landing causing the crew and artifact to survive. Morelli (Jersey's fatehr, right?) knowing teh terrible mistake about to be made, has sent a copy of the basis personality (who he knows to be on his side) to his son, hoping that the newly coined Durga and his son can figure it all out and save mankind. In order to make the AI safe he has effectively blocked all reference to Melissa to Durga while still allowing all of her skills to be accessible.

OK, its my supposition, I hope it gets some gears turning.

This is a little out there but heregoes. I think Durga is not rampant but Melissa is. My theory is that Mel, Durga, and SP are part of the same AI construct, just different parts. So, Mel is the rampant Durga and is trying to kill herself in the future because of the Flea or an unknown force (the artifact?). SP is the sane part of the AI and is trying to help us by sending us .wav files hidden by the Queen (Melissa). I still don't know what Dana has to do with this tho, besides the fact that Mel wanted her terminated and now sees her as an asset to the crew (thanks to the crew).

BTW anyone notice how Melissa shares the same name as Lt. McKay?
Just a thought.

Incorrect. In the Wav storyline where rampancy is first brought up, Durga explicitly states that "we go crazy."

Re: The Castaway

Smoke wrote:
woah woah...when did Melissa ever say anything about the identity of The Castaway?

Report is here. Quick summary: Anderian plays guitar for Melissa, at her request. She says he reminds her of someone she used to know. He asks who. She says "The Castaway." He says, "Ah, Jason Morelli." Melissa is impressed.

(And no credit to me, by the way. It was all Anderian. My name got dragged into this only because Anderian actually got to talk to Melissa twice, and the first time he didn't ask who she meant. Whilst he was kicking himself unnecessarily, I suggested that she probably meant Jason Morelli, a.k.a. the Castaway, so no big deal. Anderian figured she meant him, but hadn't been able to remember his first name. So when he got to talk to Melissa again -- and impress her with his knowledge of the Castaway's real name -- he kindly tipped his hat to me. That's all. {Thanks, by the way! Mr. Green })
