Ugh Math

Does anyone have some hints for Ugh Math? I've already found the link, but I have no clue how to solve it.

Nevermind. I figured it out. The math itself is very easy. Once you understand the notation you'll be fine.

I understand the math - I have

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
-5, -4, +2, -1, -20, +15, -5, -4

But the letters do not correspond to anything. Does the word "total" have anything to do with it?[/spoiler]

Wrong seal. You're looking for the Middle Office thread.

Ugh is right.

I'm no math major, minor, or even extra credit arithmetic guy so I'm certainly guessing here. Not knowing what all the symbols meant I just multiplied all the numbers together in what appeared to be a set, then divided by 26 and disregarded the quotient noticing merely the remainders. I got 8 numbers:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
10, 0, 0, 24, 22, 10, 0, & 8

One can see that three of them will not convert to a letter. Is there a letter/number shift going on here? Now stop laughing at my idea and provide some hints. Thanks...

You don't have to be a math guy. The paragraph under the symbols explicity explains what they mean. You just have to be able to parse sentences that are a little longer and more dense than average. I suggest you spend a few minutes trying that instead of random actions. It will save you a lot of time.

M even tells you, "...the issue isn't you at all--you're perfectly capable of solving even the most complicated math mumbo jumbo as long as you have a modicum of confidence in yourself, read the problem carefully, and take it step by step."

Ugh, Ugh, Ugh, Ugh

Well, drakono, I got the answer. Not due to your help, but thanks anyway. Not due to knowing that math. Not due to understanding any words. Actually, I don't know why I got it, but I did.

Magicrock is right. I used to be a math major and I couldn't make out what M was trying to say in those lines. I don't know the reason behind the process, but got it figured out like Magicrock by PM.

Hm, I agree with Drakono. And the line that Drakono quoted is just the one I would have quoted. Be patient, do it carefully, and it's pretty straightforward.

I struggled with it a lot, but I figured it out at the end.

Quite big spoiler:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
There are two(!) resources you have to use: Alphanumericizer and Letter shifter.

Really big spoiler - only in case of total desperation:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Alphanumericize the first group of numbers - it will be a number in letters. Write it down.
Alphanumericize the secound group of numbers, then shift the letters with the first number - it will be a number in letters. Write it down.
Repeat the process till you get to the end.
And now alphanumericize all the numbers you wrote down.
There you go.

Uh, no, I agreed with DRAKONO. I didn't need help, let alone a spoiler!

My trouble was when I used the
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
first number as the shift, I got gibberish. I found out later, thru trial and error that the shift was opposite, 7, not 19.

Confused But it isn't. You simply add the number to each in the string of numbers. I suppose it all depends on the direction you assume, but using addition on numbers tells you which way.

Also, I didn't mean my reponse to magicrock earlier to be condescending or anything -- merely encouraging. I hope it came across that way.

Edit: Okay, I played around with the built-in shifter on the site, and I can see how it would be confusing. The "shift amount" is used correctly when encoding, and to decode you have to use the negative (modulo 26). The given numbers could easily be considered to be encoded already, so you'd put them in the box on the right, ...and get the wrong results when decoding unless you use the negative shift.

But again, the math statements are correct, and tell you exactly how to shift the numbers/letters.

Ugh

Drakono...I took you comments as encouraging for sure. Not a problem at all. I just discovered the answer by continuing to shift, rather than having a reason for determining the shift amount. I'll research an above comment to try to determine that reason for the shift amount. This game is much like golf in that you may use any technique (or club) you wish to achieve the goal. I just perseved. For me then, it was a game of braun rather than brain.
