Phonopath for Dummies Trying to work my way thru this As expected, other players are running way ahead of me. I'm going to work my way thru and try to learn some thing at the same time.
So far Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ has been very useful.

booba - I think I need to be in the dummies forum. I can very basically look at the spectrum in audacity - have no idea how to manipulate, splice, stack, etc.
I was trying to do quick online tutorials - but finally decided it was better (at least for me) to just ride on the coattails of the audio tech talents of others.
Thanks for uploading the files so I can hear the actual solutions instead of just looking at them in the other phonopath thread.

Yeah r.m, I've hung around here for years and just waited for someone else to do the sound files, it's time I learned. It's a great opertunity to try and duplicate the solves from the real Phonopath. Most of this is my first time, so join in.

Aplause Booba & much THX! As Level 2 became progressively very tough for me I ditched it to TGIF out with pals.....
Would help out but am playing phone stack with them and have to shout a round of drinks for posting just this but you're worth the expense. Cya.

Thankee amandel- Just got back from a football payoff/poker game and way too "tired" atm. If anyone can advance this short bus version, please carefully explain how.

You took the fall on a round of phone stack for us? Wow, that right there is dedication! (That's such an awesome game).

This one, you're going to have to use Audacity (or a similar spectrogram-friendly program): I'm putting in step-by-step instructions on how to make it clear, since an audio file won't reveal it.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
1. Download the file and load it up into Audacity.
2. Enable spectrogram mode. I've included a screenshot of where to look below.
3. Expand the window as much as you can and press play: what you're looking for is about 20 seconds into the recording.

4.2 - Soroban
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
1. Follow the same procedure as with 4.1 to pull up the spectrogram.
2. Make one of the channels as large as possible so you can see what you're working with. Linking to hagbard celine's image, which is much cleaner than I tend to get out of Audacity, http://img831.imageshack.us/img831/4428/screenshot20120106at108.png
3. Read the abacus (soroban), which gives you two numbers: 8750 and 19500. If you need help on how abacii work, here's as good a reference as any. http://www.japan21.org.uk/downloads/resources/soroban/soroban_1.pdf
4. The "notch" hint is talking about removing frequencies from the spectrogram. While you can make this edit in Audacity using a plug-in or special code under Effect --> Nyquist Prompt, what it's really telling you is to read along the "lines" created by those frequencies listed on the lefthand side.
5. Up top (19500), you get the "Y" in Your, the "E" in Exist, and the "D" in Deceive. Down below (8750), you get the second "I" in Ambitions and "L" in Only.
6. Reading left to right, that gives the password, "YIELD".

In Audacity, go to
Edit->Preferences
(or use Ctrl+P)
On the left hand side of the screen that pops up, choose 'Spectrograms'
Change the 'Window size' to a somewhat larger value(1024 or 2048 is alright, I think, 4096 is too big.).
This changes the frequency resolution with which it does the calculations. Bigger is also slower.

Good tip Joey - for those on a Mac the preferences are under the Audacity menu. I wish I'd found that earlier.
