[SOLVED] Friday 10/22 embedded set

Here's the place, now we just need the puzzles...

also, the Fireflies Wiki page has been allocated at http://tinyurl.com/5wabo for archiving the embedded files, puzzles and their solutions.

also inio posted some links to his server a few posts below this, but requests that you don't pound it. The extracted files will be transferred to the Fireflies Wiki page link above.

Let's be careful out there!

EDIT -- I'm marking this thread as SOLVED, despite the nagging feeling that the tictactoe letters might have a 3rd message left over. I think we have found all of the .wavs we were meant to find.

I also thought I'd compile some useful links for easy reference (though I got beaten to the thread post), so in no particular order, we have:

beekeepers chat

Robyn's transcriptions
(TheBruce's transcriptions are usually here, but he will be away today).

Get ready people!

Also, if anyone feels like letting me know how to get at the images & wavs hidden inside the pics, it'd be most useful (repeated from Questions/Meta because no-one ever reads it)

Save the picture to your computer. Open it using Notepad or some-other text-only program. Scan through the gibberish until you find the hidden message. NOTE: You can't copy and past the image to Notepad -- it won't work; you have to save it and then use Notepad to open it.

Soon after the corruptions appear, I will start archiving them at

http://true.inio.org/bees/puzzles/

When I get extractions done, they will appear at

http://www.inio.org/bees/10-22/

I only have an 80kbyte/sec upstream, so be nice.

Gakk.. I know how to read embedded text.. what I need to know is how to get at the pictures and wavs. I know the simpler case is probably asked all the time and you guys go into automatic, but jeez.. that's the fouth time someone's replied without actually reading the question!

Oecumenix, I think you did get your answer. You find the embedded text, then copy and paste that section into a new file. Save it, and when you try to open it you get the picture.

It requires the use of some sort of binary or hex editor. I have made a MS Access database that lets me extract both text and certain types of files (JPG, GIF, WAV) from the images, but it refers to a set of original files and a couple of other files and directories on my computer... so not much use to anyone else.

As soon as I have any files (or text, but I mainly concentrate on the files) extracted I will attach them to a post in this thread.

It's trickier than that sometimes. If you try to save an image with the file inserted into it, IE can't recognize the format and wants to save as a .bmp. Doing so will change the image data entirely.
