INFO: Wes's Recent Books - Da Vinci Code

Quote:
While in Paris on business, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon receives an urgent late-night phone call: the elderly curator of the Louvre has been murdered inside the museum. Near the body, police have found a baffling cipher. While working to solve the enigmatic riddle, Langdon is stunned to discover it leads to a trail of clues hidden in the works of Da Vinci -- clues visible for all to see -- yet ingeniously disguised by the painter.

Langdon joins forces with a gifted French cryptologist, Sophie Neveu, and learns the late curator was involved in the Priory of Sion -- an actual secret society whose members included Sir Isaac Newton, Botticelli, Victor Hugo, and Da Vinci, among others.

In a breathless race through Paris, London, and beyond, Langdon and Neveu match wits with a faceless powerbroker who seems to anticipate their every move. Unless Langdon and Neveu can decipher the labyrinthine puzzle in time, the Priory's ancient secret -- and an explosive historical truth -- will be lost forever.

INFO: Wes's Recent Books - The Phantom Tollbooth

Quote:
Milo travels through the tollbooth in the Kingdom of Wisdom, a strange and wonderful land, where his first stop is Expectations -- so naturally, he goes beyond Expectations. (Yes. The whole book is like this.) He acquires a passenger, a watchdog named Tock, and goes to Dictionopolis, where words and letters reign supreme. At a banquet (where he must eat his words -- I told you the whole book is like this) he is charged with a quest: to bring the princesses Rhyme and Reason back from exile in the Castle in the Air. Unfortunately, that happens to be somewhere above the Mountains of Ignorance.

Still, Milo accepts the task and sets out with Tock and another companion, the nattily dressed Humbug, whose answer to most questions is "Seventeen!" (For those of you who are Douglas Adams fans, seventeen does not divide evenly into forty-two. I already tried.) They travel through the Forest of Sight, checking out the Point of View, jump to Conclusions and visit the Valley of Sound. In Digitopolis, the city of numbers, they meet the Mathmagician, the twelve-faced Dodecahedron and the .58 child, of the average family of 2.58 children.

Finally, the intrepid three make their way to the Mountains of Ignorance, where they must avoid such demons as the Gross Exaggeration, the Overbearing Know-it-all and the Threadbare Excuse. They complete their quest, and Milo returns home much more interested in life and learning

INFO: Wes's Recent Books - Le Grand Secret

Quote:
The GREAT SECRECY , it is the history of a couple separated by an extraordinary event, then joined together in circumstances such as never a man and a woman did not know the similar ones. It is also the history of a mystery which, since 1955, joined together, without the knowledge of all, in a common anguish, over the oppositions of the ideologies and the imperialisms, the heads of the greatest nations.
It is this `` Large Secrecy '' which put an end to the Cold war, which was the cause of the assassination of Kennedy, who makes comprehensible the behavior of Gaulle in May 1968, which made essential the voyages of Nixon to Moscow and Peking. It has nothing to do with the war or the bomb H. It is the secrecy of the greatest fear and the greatest hope of the world. It should not be forgotten that it is a novel. But if it were true?.

INFO: Wes's Recent Books - Mission de l'Inde en Europe

Quote:
Being an occultist, Saint-Yves believed in the existence of spiritually superior beings. These 'beings' could be contacted telepathically. Apparently Saint-Yves claimed that he was in touch with these 'superiors' himself, as a matter of fact the principles of 'Synarchy' were partially received telepathically from these 'Masters'.

According to Saint-Yves these 'Masters' with whom he claimed to be in contact lived in the mysterious underworld realm which is known as "Agartha". Saint-Yves d'Alveydre was the man who introduced the concept of "Agartha" to the Western world, "Agartha" ( the myth of "Agartha" is also known as "Shambhala", as it was known in India), the underworld realm peopled by initiates and lead by 'the Masters", Masters who are the Spiritual leaders of humanity.

Agartha is the great Asian University of the Initiates of the Greater Mysteries. Their 'Mahatma' ('Great Soul') plays the part of the supreme spiritual leader of humanity.

Quote:
In the year 1885 Saint-Yves was visited by a group of Eastern Initiates, one of them being named prince Hardjij Scharipf. Their mission was to inform Saint-Yves on 'AGARTTHA' , a spiritual and political organization. Their visit lead to his publication, titled "Mission de l'Inde en Europe, mission de l'Europe en Asie. La question des Mahatmas et sa solution". Saint-Yves dedicated this work to the "Sovereign Pontiff who wears the tiara of the seven crowns of modern Brahatmah in the ancient Paradise of the Cycle of the Lamb and the Ram". But Saint-Yves did not publish the book but decided to destroy the work and tore it apart. According to Saint Yves he acted under orders of the Brotherhood.

The wisdom revealed would not be understood and therefore a publication would be like casting pearls before swine. Other sources state that Saint-Yves decided not to "expose the life of a saint" to the outside world, the saint being "Guru Pandit", the Eastern initiate who'd visited Saint-Yves. Apparently Saint-Yves overlooked one copy of the manuscript which fell into the hands of Count Alexander Keller, son of Countess Marie de Riznitch-Keller.

INFO: Wes's Recent Books - The Lost World of the Kalahari

Quote:
From his own childhood in Africa, Van der Post had been fascinated by the Bushmen, whose culture even then was rapidly becoming extinct. In 1957 he led an expedition over the Kalahari Desert in search of the remnants of this unique people. The expedition almost comes to grief over natural obstacles and certain human failings, but in the end finds a community of Bushmen. The author describes their circumstances, customs, lore and nature with affection and imaginative sympathy.

Also matches the French phrase on the scrap of paper. Here's the relevant bits excerpted from Sam's email:

Quote:
Speaking of Wes' place, one last thing I just remembered. I looked around for anything that might fit the "obscure book" reference Wes made about the dead eyes or "numbered ones." I couldn't find anything that looked like a book he had been currently reading, but this after all his office, not his home. There was one of those deskpad calendars on his desk, recently switched over to May, but the only thing written on it was the name, "DALE" and the words "CASTLE GREEN RD", which isn't an address I recognize from around here. I did manage to find the figurine people had asked me about, the one made by Sarah Wyatt. It was on top of his filing cabinet. Someone had suggested looking at the bottom of it but there was nothing there. It was sitting on top of a small piece of paper with this written on it however. "Mais si c'était vrai ?" I haven't had time to try and figure it out yet but I brought the paper with me to make sure I got it copied correctly.

TRIVIA The Great Secret (spoiler)

If you want to know what exactly Barjavel's
"Great Secret" is, it's given below. But if you ever
want to read the book, since it is supposed
to be kept hidden for about half the volume,
you might want to skip this.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

A contagious form of immortality, carried by a
virus, originating in India.

The Crock of Gold

This is a very funny story kinda convoluted but worth the read.(and if you can read it in an irish accent, so much the better)! Keep in mind this is just a synopsis. The story is more complex than this.

of the pine wood called Coilla Doraca there lived not long ago two Philosophers. They were wiser than anything else in the world
The Grey Woman of Dun Gortin and the Thin Woman of Inis Magrath asked them the three questions which nobody had ever been able to answer, and they were able to answer them it made the women so mad they married them so they could pinch them in bed.
They treated the women well and one had a boy and the other had a girl
The women switched babies cause each hated their own baby.
The philosophers would never shut up and the women hardly ever spoke.
The women were relatives of the Shee the fairy folk.
People would come to the wood and get advice from the philosophers. This went on for years until one brother felt he had seen everything and so he caused himself to die by spinning so fast till you couldnt see him and then finally he stopped and you could see his body again. His wife the grey woman did the same thing. So the thin woman buried them under their hearthstone took care both of the children.
The next day a farmer came in and said someone had stole his washboard. It was found out that the farmers cat had killed a Leprauchans robin so they stole his washboard. The philosopher told the farmer where to look for it but the farmer found the crock of gold instead.
He was instructed to bury it under a yew tree by the philosopher, ironically this put it under the protection of the fairies and the Leprauchans could not get to it. The reason why a crock of gold is so important to the Leprauchans is so they can buy their freedom if they are ever caught. It takes them a long time to get a crock of gold cause they sneak into peoples houses and shave it off their money. Well when the Leprachans found out that the philosopher told the farmer what to do they stole the two children and took them too their land under a stump of a tree. They discovered that the mother the Thin Woman was a shee and as such had to let the children go or the whole fairy kingdom would come after them.
In the meantime the god Pan inticed the farmers daughter away and the only people that would be immune to his charms would have been the children. The Thin Woman went after her children and the philosopher went after the farmers daughter thinkin he was too old to be caught up by Pans charms (he attracts his "victims" thru sensuality). He was unable to get her tho. At this point the Leprachans are so mad that they tell the constable that the philosopher killed the two people that had been living with him so the police went and dug up the bodies while the Thin woman and her children hid in the forest.
The philosopher decides to go look for Angus Og...the god of Love and happiness so that he can help he meets all kinds of people and does strange things along the way. All the time he talks talks talks.
He finally gets caught by the policemen in the dark and with the help of the leprauchans (because by this time the gold is back to them because the children find it by accident and give it to them by accident and the thin woman has made up with them) and all of his talking he gets away. But because he knows he is innocent he goes to the policestation himself. They admire him so much for that but they will take him to be hanged for the murders anyway.
In the meantime the farmers daughter is with Pan but she is not fulfilled. They are in a little cave and who should show up but Angus Og himself! Pan and Angus let the girl decide and Love and happiness won out over lust and desire and she goes with Angus, but not without bruises from the tight grip that Pan had on her.
The Thin woman finally finds Angus and he agrees to go help her husband for what God would deny helping his children when they ask? He delights in helping us. Along the way Angus marries the farmers daughter and each time he kisses her the kiss turns into a singing bird. (how utterly charming) and the singing birds fly off to the Shee and five clans of the fairy kingdom ( they come to help without weapons for the birds sing of Love) as well as many different fairey queens and kingsthey are members of the Tuatha Da Danaan as well as the Mother of Gods, Dana. They all go into the village and rescue the Philosopher and they were happy because they came together and there were many but they were all ONE.

There was much beautiful imagery in this story and many different metaphores I am sure and ssooooo much philosophy about life but the one thing that stood out for me in the end was that they gave up selfhood and looked beyond to help others and in doing so they became more complete.
Direct quote from the story

"The voices of free people spoke in her ears and the laughter of happy hearts, unthoughtful of sin or shame, released from the hard bondage of selfhood. For these people, though many, were one. Each spoke to the other as to himself, without reservation or subterfuge. They moved freely each in his personal whim, and they moved also with the unity of one being: for when they shouted to the Mother of the gods they shouted with one voice, and they bowed to her as one man bows. Through the many minds there went also one mind, correcting, commanding, so that in a
moment the interchangeable and fluid became locked, and organic with a simultaneous understanding, a collective action--which was freedom."
