I, too, have two excellent photos of Amazing Mazian. The man is not responding to my previous post! Stop being busy and tell your story! Wink

Sorry, flu

Thanks for the heads up. I was able to get my call from Melissa. However, I was not able to get to any of the Palo Alto Axons today. Thanks to yet another change in my work hours, I'm most likely going to be unavailable to get any of the PA axons again. ><

The Amazing Mazian story :P

Ok, sorry for being away, I've had the flu and it pretty much knocked me out. I didn't want to face the large quantity of messages and try to keep up while I wasn't feeling well.

Ariock has done a REALLY good job of telling the story here, but I saw several people wanting to get "technical" details from the story.

CAVEAT: To be honest, I'm not entirely sure that what I did is not against some rule or law. So I'd like to say first and foremost: I made no calls, I did not provide others with a means to make calls. We attempted to receive one phone call, and when it was unsuccessful (I know, ruins the story) Crying or Very sad we moved on to the next axon.

I went axon hopping with the SF Team on 10/12 and when we got to the 17:45 PDT say_please axon, we discovered that the site of Ranger_D's live call (from two weeks prior) was non-op.

(img care of ariock, I think)

We stared in dismay at the scene of carnage. A payphone had been extracted from the booth, leaving the copper pair to which the payphone connected exposed.

At which point, Ranger_D quipped (at least, I thought he was joking) "If only we had a buttset." (He later quipped that he had exhausted his telecom vocabulary with that one word Razz )

I had been planning on sending Melissa a photo of me in my company's PBX room holding the buttset to qualify for Communications & Navigation for that week's special challenge. However, between fighting the flu and a busy day, I was not able to get to the server room to take the photo before it was too late. (So I went engineering, and stood next to the power rectifier that converst AC power to DC power for our phone system.)

Anyway, in response to Ranger_D's joke I responded "Hold this" and pulled a buttset out of my backpack. I thought I was being funny, and honestly I didn't expect it work (I figured the owner of the payphone would have advised SBC of the removal of the payphone and put a temp hold on the number to prevent abuse). As I'm hooking up the tip&ring clips from the test set to the payphone, Ranger_D is standing behind me excitedly pointing out which cables are tip & ring.

Brief segueway in to technical stuff:

Analog lines carry the signal by passing modulated AC current. This is why your phone line at home can work when you have a power blackout. Because the power for your phone is provided by the telecom carrier.

In order to make a phone connection, you need a speaker and mic connected (with the right circuitboard to do the modulation of your voice to a signal and from a signal to a voice that you can hear.) and you need to loop the circuit.

The exposed cables made up a broken loop. The telephone test set allowed me to complete that loop.

If the telephone company is setup to provide services to that line, I would have received dial tone.

Back to the story:

As soon as I made the connection, I heard Melissa's voice. Shocked No dialtone. Shocked That means that the phone had been ringing while we were standing their joking about me showing off my "telecom skillz."

(img care of hmrpita, I think)

(img care of ariock, I think. This is about the same time, from the other side, you can see hmrpita's white shirt on the other side of me. From left to right, it's Ceantari, Me (foreground), hmrpita (nearly fully obscured standing directly in front of me) and Darkforge, standing in front of me, mostly obscured, a little to the right. Ranger_D is off to the left, you can see his arm Razz )

The line was fuzzy because the connection of the tip&ring clips to the cable pair was not solid (they were a bit corroded.) I heard the question, and attempted to respond, she didn't accept the answer and the line kept giving me static and cutting out on me Crying or Very sad

Meanwhile people start snapping pictures, I'm trying to get Melissa to understand me (make the connection solid by futzing with the cable pairs) and then it cuts out. Crying or Very sad

I just barely get it back in time to hear Melissa say "this message was not intended for you" crystal clear Evil or Very Mad and then it devolve in to the "I love bees! I love bees!" mantra.

I handed the phone to Darkforge so that someone else would be able to verify the veracity of my actually managing to do what I did (he was the closest, and directly in front of me at the time.)

By the time he hands it back it's almost ready to hang up Crying or Very sad

There ends the story. I put my test set away and we walked to the next axon (which worked, and several axons later, we finally got a live call! Very Happy )

So, to make a long story short, too late: Wink

We had a blast, and almost manage to "patch" a "broken" phone to take a call from a 26th century AI lost in our century. Like Kamal said, "An ancient piece of crappy hardware, half of them wouldn't even take incoming calls." Cool

Sorry about the flu, Mazian. That sucks Sad

Axon hunting today. Ariock and ONI Tech Alec at the 15:43, then I joined from 15:49 to the end. Darkforge showed up at 16:47 and Ceantari joined us for one (during her break from her class) at 17:00. ONI Tech Alec and DarkForge had a little trouble with a couple of the axons. They said REACH, but it wasn't accepted. I answered the very last call of the day and the connection was VERY bad (lots of static, I could barely hear her). The static increased when it was time for me to say REACH, and it wasn't accepted (no surprise). Other than those and the two broken phones, we hotted all the axons.

Ariock has a story about a live SP call today.

I will post a little something about "Mazian's phone" in a little bit.

Does anyone have a picture of the 643 Market payphone (Market West of New Montgomery), please PM it to me? Thanks. If not, I'll try to get a photograph.

Just the payphone itself. thanks again.

Sorry, Ceantari, I do not.

What I do have is a picture of the phone that Mazian connected to last week. This is what it looks like this week.

It is gone, history, smoke, dust, vapor. It's a memory, a ghost, a cloud, a wisp, a forgotten song. It doesn't exist in this dimension any longer.

note to self: always check recipe before stirring in axons.

The 9:25 burned_out_apartment in Berkeley didn't ring but good to see it was because it was archived instead of it being a different phone or worse.

First Timer

Hi All,

So I just started this whole thing since I read it posted to /. yesterday...

Turns out that the Palo Alto Axon is sorta near me, and I made it there at 5:06 yesterday.

First I got a call from someone who told me 10 questions and answers...

Then the phone rang again, and I got a live call. I answered a question correctly, and we won...so you can imagine I am really confused...but the point is...on the ilovebees page I guess I managed to get one of the soundbites to be unlocked.

Quote:
JR jr - veni, vidi, vici? Yep!!! With a little help and ice cream from Chris!! B-)

That's me...

I have a ton of questions about this and I have been reading feaverishly to try and catch up...

My main question is, how much information from my conversation with the person should I post, and where?

People have been saying that it is Melissa or the SP that calls....she said Kamal was her brother...isn't that Yasmine?

Thanks for the help,

-Chris

You spoke with the Sleeping Princess! Cool! Good job! Very Happy
Please post as much of the conversation that you remember. Post your story. Post it all. But, post it here. Please keep us (here in this thread) informed too (by linking to whatever thread you post your story in).

Welcome Chris and WTG!

Ariock the Stickler

Actually Chris, the Sleeping Princess IS Yasmine. She has finally realized that, though she doesn't remember him, which is why there was confusion in the first place. Essentially, her memory of being Yasmine was wiped when she became an AI.

She is also Durga and it appears Melissa. Durga doesn't yet recall where she came from, so that revelation may be coming next week...

We are still mostly confused about who/what the flea is, how Melissa Durga split in time/if anything can be done about it, where my pants are SOLVED!(in my shower??!?), how many licks to get to tootsie roll center of a tootsie pop SOLVED!(tha-reeee), why the apocalypso crashed in the first place, um...other stuff probably.

Way to go on getting the axon hot! Congratulations!

Check back here for helpful info that we post for bay area Northern California Axons.

live or not live

Did Berkeley get a live call this past Tuesday (10/19)? Did I miss a post? Please let me know one way or another, please. I want to add it to the spreadsheet.

I have Davis down for one live call on 10/5 and Stockton down for one live call on 9/28.

Has Stockton received any live calls as far as anyone knows?

Yes, but I don't know exactly which one, so that's not exactly much help is it. Rolling Eyes I met up with the gang at a later axon and heard that Melissa wanted a car picture, so that's why I did the dumb image that, although dumb, got Berkeley on the special commendation page.

Message to the PMs;

Since I know you read this, and I know that you get plenty of complaints, I thought I should send you a little lubbin.

Thank you for adding me back to recipe7.html as a named axon.
