The End of Marble Hornets

First of all, I just want to say hello. My friend first told me about slenderman in August last summer and I was fascinated by such a creature and soon found out about Marble Hornets. Since then I've been excitedly following the discussions that occur on this board but this is my first time actually contributing to one.

What I want to talk about is Marble Hornets in the context of the time that has passed. This June 20th this year will mark the 3 year anniversary of Marble Hornets and 10 days before that, the 3 year anniversary of slenderman's creation on SomethingAwful. With season 3 now underway, I'm sure Marble Hornets will run into this date. But think about it: from what we know from entries and tweets, this "investigation" will have consumed Jay's life for 3 years then. The original film Marble Hornets was filmed in 2006 I believe? Not mention, Entry 34, the first of the tapes Jay kept in the safe, was posted in Feb 2011 with 52 being posted at the end of Nov 2011. That is 10 months where Jay did nothing but move from hiding places and watch tapes. Add the 7 months where he just waited in hotels and followed Alex. I'm not saying Jay wasn't trying hard enough or devised an noneffective strategy, I'm saying that a large amount of time has been devoted to this without him really learning much or doing anything with that knowledge.

We have seen Jay do some pretty crazy stuff like breaking into houses, engaging in awkward conversations with dangerous people, and even bum rushing the Operator. But I think sometime soon, Jay is going to have a realization that this has gone on long enough. It is possible that he will finally find an ally that he can trust completely in Tim and together the two of them can begin using more aggressive tactics to find Alex, Amy, or Jessica, cure slendersickness, kill the Operator: whatever their goals are. Even if Tim ends up reverting back into full time Masky, I can still see an entry in May saying something like "I just realized that I have been involved with this for 3 years almost. I'm gonna start taking a lot more risks to get this over with."

On top of this, I think I remember some complaints about the gaps between entries towards the end of S2. I'm not sure, but I think Troy responded by saying that most entries would be shorter in length and with less time between them. I also remember him stating that S3 would be a combination of detective work and found footage. This allows for a faster paced season with Jay going out and actively searching for something rather than watching hours of tapes. With this pacing, we might see the ending or a pivotal point around the 3 year mark.

So what are others' thoughts on this? I know it isn't really important to the plot as of now, but do you think the 3 year birthday of slenderman and Marble Hornets will have any relevance?

First off, welcome! Very Happy

Second, I don't believe the date will have much importance in the series. After all, they did something for the second anniversary... A tweet and:

Although you make interesting points, I don't understand what there is to discuss here...

I'm not sure they'll be doing anything for the anniversary but I do hope you're right about Jay finally standing up and kicking some ass this season. I'm not sure how long the season is going to be but I'm hoping very soon the entries will begin building towards a climax. I'm not exactly sure what the climax of the series will entail but I'm almost certain it will involve Jay trying to stop the Slenderman once and for all. Whether this will involve Tim helping him remains to be seen. I'm sure a final showdown with Alex will also happen.

It will be the end of an era, hopefully a new series will fill the void.

I would love to see a dark ending. If I wrote the ending:

The ark will be a building where all of the missing people (brian, jessica, amy, sarah, others) are being kept. Totheark is revealed to be Alex who breaks free of his slender control and works with Jay and Tim to find the ark. when they find it, they open the door and find everyone chained up, only to have Alex reveal that he will never be free of the operator's control, shuts the door in their face, and they get locked in the ark forever. The last entry is uploaded by Alex himself.

Granted that only took me two minutes, I could think of a better ending if I put time into it. Something along those lines would satisfy me.

At least one person will have to be alive in the end to upload the final video.

I'm sort of hoping it will be a bittersweet ending. My theory is that Jay will be able to stop the Operator, at least temporarily, but will come with huge costs. Alex, Tim and probably all the other characters will die in the process. It would be silly to think the ending will be totally happy, but I do want Jay to succeed in the end. He's a likable protagonist, even if he's constantly doing dumb stuff.

Im sort of proud to be a fan of Marble Hornets because it's such a uniqueness to it. I mean, I know there are some blogs out there where the characters have discovered ways to "beat" slenderman but I havn't been able to get into any of them. I'm talking about stuff like "core theory" and I think there was a writer that goes by the name of "M" or something.

MH was one of the first slenderman stories created. With any kind of paranormal story like this, the heroes would use some kind of crazy magic thing or weapon or something to destroy their monster. But in MH, there hasn't been much information on any such counter to the operator. I really can't see the writers dumping something on us like "Jay, Tim and Brian combine their psychic powers given to them by exposure to the Operator to destroy the Operator" but at the same time something like that might happen because we already have strange things like teleportation.

What I am expecting, and would be a little dissapointed if I don't see it, is an explanation of what the operator is, why he follows/watches people, and what it wants or really does to people. The great thing about slenderman for me is that the entire concept is based around unknown information. Up until now, we don't know a lot about the operator, even after watching this series for nearly 3 years and that is what makes MH so interesting. Right now its like we are in the blair witch project, except no one told us the legend of the blair witch. I don't think coming out and stating all this about the operator would subtract from the unknown surrounding slenderman. Its the difference between Troy saying "This is where the Operator came from, what he does and how to beat him, in my story " and saying "This is where slenderman came from, what he does, and how to beat him and all things related to slenderman."

For that matter, I would also like all questions to be answered with no debate surrounding them. Some people like an ambiguous ending like in Inception or something but MH has just been throwing mystery after mystery at us since day 1 and I just want the answers more or less given to me. Maybe we will have to think about it and figure things out but I'd the conclusions we arrive to be non-debatable. I'd like to be able to rewatch the series once it's over and know for sure what everything Alex was drawing meant, what BONE means, what the doll is for... everything. I had the same feeling with Lost but I feel like even if I were to watch that again I wouldn't understand everything. It's been fun trying to answer these questions as we go but I think by the end, we should know everything for sure.

In regards to what the actual ending contains, I wouldn't be surprised to see Jay and other friendlies about to be whatevered by the Operator (like I said, we don't even know what threat he really has) and Alex has some change of heart and redeems himself by sacrificing himself to save them. It's a little cheesy but I wouldn't mind seeing it.

P.S. Does anyone know where I might start if I wanted to read those blogs I mentioned earlier in this post? I've looked into them before but all I've seemed to find is a mess of interlocking plots of blogs by different authors and I'm not sure where to start. I've read Just Another Fool and am currently reading Seeking Truth and both have been good stories so I'm looking forward to more.

Even when MH is over, we'll still have Angora chat and the rest of the Slender Man Mythos. Razz

You know what would be a really bittersweet ending? If Jay defeats the Operator, but in doing so everyone gets their minds wiped. (and the tapes all become hopelessly corrupted.)

It would be like nothing had ever happened. Crying or Very sad
