Making a Marble Hornets timeline stream thing

Hey all,

Long time lurker occasional poster yada yada. I'm a web developer by day, and I've been thinking about making a webpage that would show the entire Marble Hornets timeline in one page in an easily readable format - sort of like a slideshow of all the tweets, videos and major events, laid out in such a way that you could experience the whole MH story on one page as it happened.

I've started a little bit of work, and am aiming to get it done by end of April (I've got a bunch of other work on at the moment, otherwise it'd be sooner). I was wondering whether anyone had any thoughts or ideas about that? I'm using the timeline on the MH Wiki as a source, so if there are any inaccuracies you know of on that page let me know (or just correct them).

I'll post some pictures once I've got something to show, but for now I'll tell you what I'm thinking. I see it working as a single page, with the timeline scrolling up from the bottom, and the different twitter and youtube accounts being coloured and positioned in a way that clearly identifies them (think iPhone text messages). You could navigate it by scrolling (maybe) or hitting a single button to advance each tweet/entry (more likely). *Possibly* with some kind of 'cinema mode', where the whole thing plays on its own, but I don't know whether it's possible to do that with YouTube embeds in a way that won't just bug out and be annoying to the viewer.

Any thoughts? Suggestions? I'll contact the crew before I start in earnest (as if you're not lurking this forum, Troy) in case they have any reservations about it, just want to pitch the idea to the forum before I put too much time into it.

Cheers

a comprehensive timeline is aleady up here. making it look fancy might be nice but i don't think it'd get the reaction you'd expect for all the time it would take to do that. good luck either way.

I sort of agree with pravado. There's already a stickied time line that includes all of the Tweets and TTA response videos, with order they were posted and the probable order of actual occurrence. Of course, if you'd like to continue with your slideshow version, I wish you luck. ^_^

haha why are y'all having such shitty responses

it's maybe a bit early for dude to telegraph something that you say won't be done for 5 weeks but if you do it people will love it, i think that what he's talking about goes well beyond any of the other resources you mentioned

I've been working on this for a while, but seeing your post made me want to finish it. I only have season 1 done so far, but here:

http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3E68217EC1EE7AEC&feature=view_all

It's a YouTube playlist along with videos that I made that showcase the tweets made between videos. Just hit play all, and it'll do everything for you.

@Xicon: Awesome! I've looked for YT playlists before but I've never found one that had everything in it. That was my other reason for posting here before wasting too much time on it - checking that something similar doesn't already exist.

@Pravado etc: I know there are forum posts and wiki entries already, but they're a little dry don't you think? If I want to introduce someone to the MH story for the first time, sending them a link to a wall of text with a bunch of links in might turn them off a little. I think that a seamless experience without having to click around a lot of different places would do more to get people into the series. Making things look fancy is a lot more important than some people think.

I made it sound like this was going to be a lot of work, but in truth I could have got it done in the space of a couple of hours on a lazy sunday - I just don't have any lazy sundays on the horizon for a while. I think we should promote Xicon's playlist to newcomers to the series, it's a great thing he/she's done!

An interactive timeline is an interesting idea. More visually oriented as opposed to textually oriented, yeah?

If I'm understanding it correctly, it's taking the content of the forum's timeline and utilizing it in a stand-alone, interactive web interface. So, instead of a list of text and links, it'd allow you to scroll through every tweet, picture, and video in the order they were posted, with TwitPics and YouTube videos embedded into the page (so no, not 'links' to the videos). Each element would be color-coded, so for example YouTube videos from the MH channel in blue, TTA videos in red, Tweets in orange, and pictures in green.

It seems like a neat idea, TheFuss. As you point out, it's a good way for people not familiar with the series to get a jump-in point with everything at their fingertips, rather than rummaging through the forums, trying to find their way through the wiki, or being given a list of links to follow in the form of the current timeline.

Biggest thing, though, as you are wise to say you'll do, is talk with Troy about this. You'd want to make sure a) that embedded content will still count 'hits' and show ads or b) that, if they don't, Troy et al are all right with that.

I'm a fan of the web designs and programming myself, so if you would like any assistance let me know. (PM me or go to my website for my email if you're interested.)

My playlist currently only covers Season 1 - those tweet videos are arduous to make - but I just watched it. 2 hours long, and it actually works pretty well I think. The tweet videos can be a bit tiresome at times, but I couldn't think of a better solution. The Solstice Twitter Watch works really, really well though - pretty suspenseful.

@redherring: Yeah, you've got the measure of it. Something that flows and jumps out at the viewer, with all the videos and twitpics and tweets embedded there, right on the page. Embeds still count towards page hits I'm pretty sure, I was thinking more about their DVD sales - they might not like something that could be seen as competition.

OK, what I'll do is sketch up something later on and post a picture so everyone has an idea of what I'm talking about. Then we can throw ideas around for colour schemes and layout and stuff and if people still think it's a waste of time they can say so.

I want to stress that I'm thinking about total newcomers to the series when I talk about this - the timeline that we already have is a great bit of work, and it's really useful for you guys when you want to settle debates and back up theories, but for an outsider it's just a wall of timestamps and links...

Go for it OP. Any timeline sort of thing I've ever seen is never really straightforward, easy to use, and/or convenient. I feel like you're gonna make something that makes it almost too easy (in a good way) to witness the legend that is Marble Hornets.

It'd be an easy way to get my friends started on the series. The sticky topic would probably make my friends have an aneurysm...no offense to the creator of that thread, it's just that most people would look at that (especially newcomers) and be like "TOO COMPLICATED" and leave.

Edit:

I wouldn't really worry about this, as the DVD has exclusive content such as commentary, deleted scenes, bloopers, etc. that wouldn't be on your site. Plus the DVD is a nice item to have because it doesn't require an Internet connection and comes in a nice box and all.

Once I finish editing the timeline article on the wiki... it will have all the information you plan on including in this thing.

Maybe I'm not understanding what its purpose is...?

@TheFuss: You could always provide a link to the DVD website on the page as well if you're concerned about it.

That's sort of what I was trying to point out in the post I made above, and that TheFuss was trying to clarify in his response. The timelines (at least as they are now) are text, links, and timestamps, which are useful for those of us familiar with the series, but might put up a wall for people not familiar with how the series works.

You're right in insinuating that anybody could technically go to the timeline and figure it out if they wanted to, but I think what TheFuss is going for is something that's all in one webpage, containing all the embedded videos, tweets, pics, etc. that can be scrolled through chronologically. Like a one-stop shop for the series that newbies to MH can be linked to and see everything there is to see in one place, without having to go back-and-forth between YouTube channels and the Twitter account.
