Re: Peter Weyland and Prometheus

If you read this far, thanks for your indulgence and attention. Cheers.

Interesting read that echoes my thoughts. One of the first things I wondered reading the WI corporate stuff was that the designers/creators/producers/writers etc. were not overly concerned with accuracy or reality. It's a bit like the writer of a sci-fi about time travel normally won't bother with detailed explanations of all of the what-ifs that surround the concept. In this example they're not explaining how, with enhanced age limits, the earth can provide enough resources and what all these millions of employees actually DO. There can't possibly be enough to occupy them - and even if there was the business model doesn't work because not enough of the company makes money and it would be like the government (NASA, defence, healthcare etc.) but without enough tax revenue. In summary I don't think we can read too much into the wider ideas of the film.

In terms of his aim I agree that all of this seems to be about extending his own life past natural norms and this is almost confirmed by the lack of a death date as well as the comments from the producers. The hypersleep idea is an often used one in sci-fi (see Alistair Reynolds for the effects of long distance travel and the time-dilation effects as a perfect example) and it makes sense that a large part of his life is to do with this one aim. What isn't clear is what the journey involving Prometheus adds to the saga. If he's there in the wheelchair, as seems likely, then his plans extend beyond a simple extension of life. But then, what's the point of living forever within a box, you'd want to be popped out occasionally to witness great events of course. Or is it that he believes something on the planet will provide a way to live forever in a way that is more befitting of his stature.

@darkkk: I'd agree that's where we're at.

One other point on Weyland - I had noticed the 'memorial library' entry earlier (I won't so far as to trout you because it was probably about 50 pages back!); however, he is still listed on the site as the CEO.

If he was dead (or an emotional construct within an android), surely he would be listed as honorary CEO or similar?

What is odd is the lack of any mention of his demise or conversion or any action in fact past the date of the memorial. As such a major corporation you'd think they'd have to be more clear about who's in charge (again, maybe only in reality!).

Oh Shit!!

A common belief that David ended up as a Space Jockey just got laid to rest. I scanned the TV spot #2 and came across this:

This goes a long way to explaining his condition where he's being carried and assisted on the ship.

So who is the evolved jockey?

Holloway?

edit: I guess it has to be him, as he's nowhere to be found in the clips where Shaw comes to trouble..

Off topic a bit, but if there's any graphics guys here who have been sweating it trying to ID the font used in the Prometheus production, its Proxima Nova.

https://typekit.com/fonts/proxima-nova

This is used for titles/sub-titles, with Arial as the body font.

I've been trying to spec that damn font for weeks..

Cool

The jockeys in that look like the same color as the stars and planets where David looks real color. I think the jockey's there are 'recorded' so to speak.

I dunno, you can see its reflection on the main sphere image as well. And you see a live one, in what has to be just before this scene here.

*shrugs*

after a bit of snooping around it would appear that the fourth image is either not yet available or not on the projectprometheus.com website.

Each image uncovered so far is located under the previously mentioned assets folder with it's picture id number as the folder name after it

eg

Code:
image 6EQUJ5 - <img src="assets/1/6EQUJ5.jpg" width="100%" alt="">
image 245409 - <img src="assets/2/245409.jpg" width="100%" alt="">
image TAS - <img src="assets/3/tas.jpg" width="100%" alt="">

so based on this i decided to try accessing the assets folder (again as previoulsy mentioned) and got the 403 error. proceeded to try folders 1 2 and 3 within the assets directory and again got 403 errors.

tried assets/4/ expecting a 403 message and actually got a 404 file not found error instead. The same with 5 and 6.

Not too sure how relevant any of this actually is but if the image was already available i would have thought it would have been uploaded to the server just not visible yet.

any thoughts??

I wish you'd asked. It was in the original source code... Wink

I tried this as well and I think all it means is those spaces are reserved for the next 3 images but without hacking we'll have to wait for the puzzles to solve to reveal them.

In other news, if anyone is able to put up with Russian dubbing, here's the International trailer in 3D, make sure to view the video on YouTube as 3D doesn;t work with embeds.

I'm inclined to agree with index - the images might be 'out there' for us to find, but not linked to the site as yet; when we find them (which we will.... Twisted Evil), they'll be uploaded to the site.

Or, they really are hanging us out and leaving us to twist in the wind...

Future World

So figuratively speaking...

Mr. Peter Weyland was born of two parents.

One who lived in the "Old World" with "Comparative Mythology".

And the other who lived in the "New World" with "Software Engineering".

Two diverse practitioners...one son.

Peter Weyland - "Future World"

Yes, and remember there's a brief scene on the most recent tv spots, where one of the characters (don't remember which) looks into a tunnel of sorts and sees a figure running away, but then it fades like a hologram. So it may as well be just a projection, even though the figure looked considerably small.
Furthermore I don't agree with the theories about someone turning into the Space Jockey or even using the suit, seeing as it's too big and the whole idea of a character "turning evil" for that purpose seems far fetched in my opinion, and it goes in hand (explicitly or not) with the alleged leaked script already debunked by Jon Spaihts himself (and which I'm sure it didn't include Peter Weyland anyway, nor the creatures we've seen, nor the ship crashing). It's more likely (in my interpretation of the trailer, that is) that whoever summoned them into that temple became aware of the kind of shit Weyland was getting into, gets really mad and seeks to get rid of him and his work. We still don't know what happens after that, because I remember Lindelof saying that most of the action happens in space, yet most of the action we see is in that planet, including the scene where ONLY Shaw and Vickers are seen running away from the Space Jockey model ship. It's not enough to piece things together, because something tips them off about the real purpose of that temple and I'm sure it's NOT the blue being.

Also I'd like to add something to what FilmEdge wrote, which elaborates some of the ideas I've thought about and others that have been posting here: When people talk about immortality and life extension, they often neglect brain deterioration, namely Alzheimer. It's bound to happen, after a certain age the braincells die and the thought processes are impaired. This is something not every sci-fi writer is concerned about, but even considering that Lindelof and Spaihts didn't have that in mind, I'm sure Mr. Weyland will be portrayed as an insane man. He may seem still smart, but having lived past his prime and still looking for ways to keep himself from dying might've turned him crazy about the idea, and in turn make him dangerous to himself and others around him.

Adding to that there's another company fighting against Weyland Industries in order to control the resources on Earth, which is most likely Yutani Corporation... This adds more stress to the already frail mind of an old man like Weyland, and the outcome will most surely be negative.
