Hard to tell if the PMs are simply trying to attract more web traffic to the PROMETHEUS sites or are attempting to facilitate progress in the game itself.

This implies to me that either there's a 'hidden' clue to the next photo solution online already and they're trying to get our attention back in the right area to find it, or they're simply stalling for time until they're ready to enable the next clue-for-solution in the game schedule by "pinging" the site to stay in fans' news feeds.

They mentioned the Weyland solar panel entry a couple days ago, now they're talking Sputnik today.

Are we supposed to solving for a clue related to "things in orbit around Earth" (for $500, Alex) perhaps?

Perhaps this is the key question that must be answered to move forward:

"Peter Weyland will make a big leap in technological innovations in the next century. What do you think are the biggest technological advances of the last century?"

Safe and Abundant Water - preventing the spread of disease, increasing life expectancy.
Electronics - vacuum tubes and, later, transistors that underlie nearly all modern life.

Interstate Highways - 44,000 miles of U.S. highway allowing goods distribution and personal access.
Space Exploration - going to outer space vastly expanded humanity's horizons and introduced 60,000 new products on Earth.
Internet - a global communications and information system of unparalleled access.
Imaging Technologies - revolutionized medical diagnostics.
Household Appliances - eliminated strenuous, laborious tasks, especially for women.
Health Technologies - mass production of antibiotics and artificial implants led to vast health improvements.
Petroleum and Gas Technologies - the fuels that energized the 20th century.
Laser and Fiber Optics - applications are wide and varied, including almost simultaneous worldwide communications, non-invasive surgery, and point-of-sale scanners.
Nuclear Technologies - from splitting the atom, we gained a new source of electric power.

Sorry, hopefully this will explain: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SummonBiggerFish (and i realise having to explain makes it unfunny!)

So, if we focus on things humanity has gained from space exploration; we're down to just 60,000 possibilities! come on people, we should have this solved by, oooh, 2081?!?[/quote]

From the hints, it is more likely to be about the beginnings of man's entry into space than about products developed a a result of it. Sputnik, Apollo, Atlas Rocket, Werner Von Braun.

"20th century: The automobile, television, nuclear weapons, space craft, Internet." (Text of P. Weyland TED talk)

I'm thinking more like Yuri Gagarin or Vostok 1 or something like that..
1st human into space.

or

In 1960, the little-known pioneer was part of an U.S. Air Force project called Excelsior, which was designed to test the effects of space on human beings — and, more important, to determine whether an astronaut could survive an aborted mission, even at 20 miles above the earth.

Kittinger had the right stuff. He traveled all the way into space via balloon — then jumped out
