[META][SPOILERS] Halo: Fall of Reach timestamp analysis

I found a discrepency in the timestamps on the chapter headers starting with the chapter on page 155 of Halo: the Fall of Reach, and ending with page 211.

I'm putting this in a spoiler box for those who have yet to read the book:

I have the "First Edition, November 2003, OPM 13" paperback version.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Page 155, Date 0600 Hours July 18, 2552: The UNSC Battlegroup stages in orbit while the Marines attempt to retake the city under siege by the Covenant ground forces.

Page 164, Date 0600 Hours July 18, 2552: Meanwhile we discover that the ground forces have suffered near complete annihilation at the hands of the Covenant ground forces, so they are sent SPARTANs to destroy the Covenant with a HAVOC nuke once civilians are evacuated.

Page 175, Date 1800 Hours July 18, 2552: After the Marine's harrowing escape from the Covenant, the SPARTANs have landed and secured the drop zone, policed the survivors and then deploy to sweep the city for civilians.

Page 186, Date 2120 Hours July 18, 2552: Capt Keyes engages in the Battle for Sigma Octanus IV, culminating in the discovery of a Covenant spook ship which Keyes destroys so that he can intercept the Covenant intelligence signal about the Forerunner artifact.

Page 200, Date 2010 Hours July 18, 2552: John 117 deploys the HAVOC nuke and investigates the city per his orders to recon the enemy forces and activities. James, Fred, Kelly and he discover the Forerunner artifact and engag in battle with Hunters. James loses his arm, the Covenant transmission to the orbiting spook ship is interrupted.

Page 211, Date 0500 Hours July 18, 2552: Keyes does a second sweet of the system in search of lifeboats after the battle for Sigma Octanus IV.

Please note that the last chapter in the spoiler is approximately 15 hours, 10 minutes prior to the previous chapter.

I expect this is a typo, and not an indication of any kind of time loop ala Forerunner Halo: First Strike.

[SPEC wild="100%"] All previous spec about a time loop may be a bad mistake on the part of Eric Nylund's editor. [/SPEC]

[SPEC wild="10%"] The timestamp anomaly in Fall of Reach was unintentional, the timestamp anomaly in First Strike is intentional.[/SPEC]

Yeah, the date was probably supposed to change from the 18th to the 19th but someone screwed it.

I would put that at 0%.

I checked my copy that I bought last month. Same 'error', but I believe I have the same edition:
"First Edition: Novermber 2001 OPM 13"
ISBN 0-345-45132-5

Someone get Nylund on the phone! Call his editor![/SARCASM]

Nice work Mazian.Smile

could be an example of the overlapping storyline found throughout the books. follow storyline one from a to b, then jump back to follow storyline two from a2 to b2, which was happening at approximatly the same time

No, not possible. The battle for Sigma Octanus IV was in full swing on July 18 at 0600 hours, which makes it impossible for Keyes to do a survivor sweep at 0500 hours AFTER the battle of Sigma Octanus IV.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Actually if you look back up there, as of 0500 July 18, the battle had not even begin.

Help here!

A friend is borrowing my copy of TFoR, so I need some instant assistance with this. A damn while back I typed out excerpts from the novel regarding "... squares, triangles, bars, and dots..." I forgot to page one of them and wondering what page and what was happening prior to this excerpt:

Quote:
"The transmission that Keyes intercepted only makes sense translated this way," a man in the shadows said. A holotank hummed into operation. Tiny geometric symbols danced in the air above it: squares, triangles, bars, and dots.
To the Master Chief, they looked like either Morse code or ancient Aztec hieroglyphics.

I'm can't remember what that transmission they were talking about and on what vessel Keyes was aboard when receiving that source.
