Have you heard from The Courier
Seeking the Travelers and Observers of this ARG

A little over a month ago I received an email from someone named "The Courier". At first I assumed his email to be spam or possibly a late April Fool's joke. But what happened in the following days proved that it was in fact an ARG taking off.

This "Courier" has addressed me and two of my friends.. Two of us are Travelers and one is an Observer. Theres quite a few references in the material we've uncovered so far.. old english, runic poems, quotes from fantasy authors Tolkien and Pratchett, among other things...

As I said it has been over a month, but I have yet to see anyone post about it online. I know there are people out there because some of the links that we've uncovered and downloaded show that there have been a little under 200 people downloading the same files we were.

I didn't want to post my entire experience over the last month on here, so I have made a single post on a free Wordpress blog. I have no intentions of directing anyone there other than to read my story from A to Z.. posting your thoughts back here would be more ideal than trying to comment on the blog post.

Please have a look and if you or someone you know has been contacted by The Courier, I would like to hear of their experiences and be made known of their existence.

Thanks.

Here's the link to my story over the last month.

Well, I guess I wasn't incorrect about this not being very wide spread... I can't say that I'm shocked, but I expected to get maybe one person with the same experiences as us.

Once I have determined who is behind this ARG I will post back here, for anyone that was curious.

YO!

I'm the friend, the first one mentioned. I actually have a pre-existing Unfiction account (I was here a lot for the testsubjectsneeded but mostly lurked) but I could not for the life of me remember the username or password so I just made another.
I thought it would be good to introduce myself just in case anyone else who knows something DOES contact us through this forum.

For the sake of completeness, The exact text I received from the courier in the email (before the "decode" page) where he asked what I had seen was as follows:

Observer,

Tell me, what have you seen? What of the apparent and what of the hidden? What of the travelers, and what of the wilds?
You and yours are my eyes in this world, and the time has come for me to see.

- The Courier

There was also another friend of ours who received this email, she had previously sent an email to the couriers account and after a short exchange had been made an "observer" as well.

That would be an important piece of information, wouldn't it..

The Courier's email is ungewilde@gmail(dot)com.

Ungewilde (un-gewilde) means "not in subjection to". This was also one of the blacked out words that is on the first puzzle, the word-find.

Went ahead and sent an email to the Courier to see if anything comes of it. I'll post here again if I get a reply.

I love Tolkien, so I'm rather hoping that this turns out well.

Well, up to this point it doesn't seemed that The Courier or this ARG is favoring Tolkien or any other writer for that matter. But rather, he's using their works as references and pieces to his puzzles. All in all, this appears to be leading up to something new and not necessarily something we're already familiar with.

We'll see.

Oh, I totally understand that. What I meant was more that I love when ARGs make references to books and such. For example, I've played through a couple games that used the classic references to Alice in Wonderland. Something about seeing a familiar quote makes it more fun!

 I got an email
I had emailed him/her

Quote:
Deep in the heart alone murmurs the Mighty One his solemn undertone.

That's how he/she works.. you get a little clue in this case a quote.. if you google it you find that it's from an 1800's Irish song or poem called "A Call of the Sidhe"...

Have a look and respond back to The Courier with the next line. And remember, always google everything.

We'll see how this goes...

My email just said "All that is gold does not glitter".

I'm a slight overachiever when it comes to Tolkien, so I responded with the full poem. Haven't heard back yet, though.

Edit: Speak of the devil, I just got a response. It said "Welcome, Observer", with no subject line. I'm really not sure what to do with that.

Second edit: As for my other Observer friend up there, here's what I got out of that subject line, spoilered in case you wanted to figure it out yourself.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"Dream unto dream may pass" is a line from George William Russel's poem A Call of the Sidhe.

Full text:
TARRY thou yet, late lingerer in the twilight's glory:
Gay are the hills with song: earth's faery children leave
More dim abodes to roam the primrose-hearted eve,
Opening their glimmering lips to breathe some wondrous story.
Hush, not a whisper! Let your heart alone go dreaming.         5
Dream unto dream may pass: deep in the heart alone
Murmurs the Mighty One his solemn undertone.
Canst thou not see adown the silver cloudland streaming
Rivers of faery light, dewdrop on dewdrop falling,
Star-fire of silver flames, lighting the dark beneath?         10
And what enraptured hosts burn on the dusky heath!
Come thou away with them for Heaven to Earth is calling.
These are Earth's voice—her answer—spirits thronging.
Come to the Land of Youth: the trees grown heavy there
Drop on the purple wave the starry fruit they bear.         15
Drink: the immortal waters quench the spirit's longing.
Art thou not now, bright one, all sorrow past, in elation,
Made young with joy, grown brother-hearted with the vast,
Whither thy spirit wending flits the dim stars past
Unto the Light of Lights in burning adoration.         20

Yeah, about that.. My reason for posting all this in the first place was to hopefully find people that were already receiving emails from The Courier. Now, naturally you would think with any ARG the point would be for it to spread, but it almost seems to me that The Courier initially only planned on working with select people that he initiated contact with. I know of 3 people that have been added to this game that were not a part of his initial emails and they have all been made Observers. I have not seen any new Travelers added.

The Courier only contacted the Observer from my initial group one other time after the very first email... and he was just asked to report what he as seen. At that point The Courier gave him the latest puzzle to give to the Travelers.

So based on what I've experienced up to this point, I would say that your best effort would be to help solve the puzzle. Usually, the puzzles uncover a new URL or keyword or phrase. Thats where we're stuck right now and we need to get past it. I have it posted on my blog (in the first post), but I'll post it here to help. It consists of two parts. Knock yourself out.

Lmao I sent him an email and he replied with a completely appropriate response.

My message:
Quote:
Sometimes the uninvited come to observe.

His message:
Quote:
He met within the murmurous vestibule
His young disciple. "'Tis no common rule,
Lycius," said he.

Google the quote and you'll see it's a quote from Lamia by John Keats. The quote continues "for uninvited guest to force himself upon you, and infest with an unbidden presence the bright throng of younger friends; yet must I do this wrong and you forgive me."

The guy's well versed. But I haven't been beaten yet. Two can play at this game.
