In image one, the boxes in the Decode section look like morse code close up.

If it was morse code the totals would be divisible by 8.

Now, naturally you would think with any ARG the point would be for it to spread, but it almost seems to me that The Courier initially only planned on working with select people that he initiated contact with.

Sounds to me like he had a target audience, especially since you know multiple people involved.

Regardless, here's something I noticed when looking at the two images.

Each row of letters has four letters each (and one with five), with those rows in sets of five, making a total of 15 rows. There is an additional set of letters on the portrait page with the same setup, making a total of 20 rows.

The blacked out part underneath the decode bit has sets of four rows, looking like they each have four letters. There are five of these, making 20 rows total. Sound familiar?

I'm fairly certain that rearranging the letters into a pattern similar to the blacked out boxes will lead to something. I'm at school now, or else I'd try to work on it. Hope that helps, though!

The First Additional Observer

We'll see how this goes...

My email just said "All that is gold does not glitter".

I'm a slight overachiever when it comes to Tolkien, so I responded with the full poem. Haven't heard back yet, though.

Edit: Speak of the devil, I just got a response. It said "Welcome, Observer", with no subject line. I'm really not sure what to do with that.

Hey guys! I'm the one Jonmkl was talking about who butted in on the game. Your emails are exactly like my first two. But as the game went on, the Courier included me in more. He sent me the same emails as the initial Observer (Jonmkl). I don't think he's planning on making more Travelers. I don't think he has the resources or clues enough for more than two. One of the emails I got that was identical to Jonmkl's had a subject heading his didn't though, a line from Keats' "Belle Dame Sans Merci," so there's a chance the Courier will give the new Observers something to play with, even if it's totally inconsequential. lol My heading just said, "And there I shut her wild wild eyes."

If we read the ae in DAEIL is æ then it comes down to four letters to match the rest.

Break each group of four letters into two groups of two then each pair of letters undergoes a transformation depending on if they line up with a dash or dots.

As to what the transformations could be I haven't found it yet.

Hmmm!

Both of you guys are correct in your observation (see what I did there).. when I first received the puzzle a couple weeks ago, this was my first approach, dividing the letters into the appropriate sectioned layouts, but I didn't come up with any leads. I did try several different layouts rotating the letters around in unison and also tried rotating the blocks (sort of going of the rotation of the Golden Ratio). I have a very long text file with probably 15 different variations of this approach, but it wouldn't make much sense to anyone just by looking at it lol.

This was the first layout I sent to my Observer and other Traveler a couple weeks ago.

One thing to take note of is how the first block of text have a lot of the same letters as the block of letters the courier wrote on the portrait page, as well as the second block of letters... it's almost as if you could merge many of the rows of letters based on the same letters they share in the same order... but again, there's no lead from this either.. just more speculation.

And with the morse code, I also looked at, but when I saw the letter representation (D, H, M, U), nothing jumped out at me.. so I moved on. I worked this one quite a bit as soon as I got it, but I haven't really had any time to look at it in the last week or so.

Just to add another dead end theory here.. After girlwhoruledtheworld brought up morse code again, I decided to go back and look at it all again with a fresh mind.

I pointed out earlier that the 4 different block types broken into morse code would give you the letters D M H and U. I couldn't think of how these could apply before, but this time around they jumped out at me as..

D = days H = hours M = minutes and U could maybe represent UTC for determining precise timezone discrepancy. So I thought the blocks and the letters could be two separate puzzles.. the blocks being a single or multiple times and the letters being an explanation or keyword as to what the time was pointing to.

But again it was kind of a dead end as there are a lot of D's H's M's and U's... back to the drawing board...

Ok, so after a few weeks of overcomplicating things and hitting a lot of dead ends, we finally cracked the puzzle. If you're still interested, you can find the answer in my blog update.
