I am having trouble completing the crossword puzzle.

We also have this, which probably relates back to the unsolved bits under the Sudoku?

Think abstractly.

Narrow down component pieces.

Things grow finer as you filter them.

The largest piece will come first. When you find the smallest, then you'll have your answer and we can continue.

I am sure you have questions. Some information can be compromising, however, and must be earned.

Hey everyone!

Despite starting the thread, I've kinda been lurking a bit. Finals came up and all. But in any case, I had a thought for the middle piece of the puzzle. It seemed that it could be related to the LaFontaine Industries page, right? One of the most classic ciphers I know of takes a book and spells out a message with it using numbers that indicate page and word numbers. Maybe it's a variation on that?

If anyone wants to check, go right ahead. I'm on mobile right now, so I'm pretty limited. Hope that gets some thoughts going!

A book cipher was the first thing I thought of as well, but I seem to be having difficulty either spelling out or putting words together to form a solution. There's either not enough paragraphs, sentences, or long-enough words that seem to match the puzzle or have a coherent solution. I'll keep at it and see if I can come up with anything.

In my frustration/boredom I've been solving the crossword puzzle and I think I have 2 clues left on that. Anyone else playing this? It's pretty basic and maybe I have some of the answers wrong but I think I'm pretty close. Here's the solution I have (sorry, I don't have a scanner right now, so I'll have to just post the answers I've got):
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Across:
3 - You can only get this from one place - ???
5 - Big money-maker - ???
7 - Heart of the nightlife - DOWNTOWN SOUTH
12 - Municipal periodical - TRIBUNE
14 - Place for recreation - GREEN SPACE
15 - The city's other specialty - TELECOMMUNICATIONS
16 - The big man's assistant - SECRETARY
17 - A step down from the top - FIRST CHAIR

Down:
1 - Capacious enterprise - LAFONTAINE INDUSTRIES
2 - Keeps track of the credits - TREASURER
4 - Get a degree here - TTU (Tungsten Technical University)
6 - Right in the middle - CITY CENTER
8 - Get from point A to point B - TRANSPORTATION
9 - Variety of our namesake we build with - CARBIDE
10 - What we're known for - TUNGSTEN
11 - The face of the city - PUBLIC RELATIONS
13 - Head honcho - GOVERNOR

I agree with your crossword solution, although I had "carbide" for 9-down (not sure that it will matter). I'll have to go back to see where you found some of the other answers that I had missed. Do you think there is more to it, or just a way to get people to read the websites more closely?

All the words in the crossword are in http://tungstencitycouncil.yolasite.com/
except for Niobium (or carbide for that matter, which is just as good an answer)
A clue to go Periodic Table ?

I can come up with CONeArPSi which will at least will anagram to Ace Prison and many other things.

Ah well, something to do...

Edit to add: I had the most problem with 3 across, till I found a possible answer here:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
and operates the city's private vehicle rental service.

I took a shot at it, and I think I found the right answer. Probably, anyway.
(2,1,3) | (4,1,3) | (5,2,3) | (7,1,10) | (5,4,6) | (8,2,4) |
That's what's given, right? Well, if you count the bullet points, there are nine paragraphs, and that would be the first point, then sentence is the second point, and the words are the third. That must be what he (I'm assuming "he") meant in the clue.

(2,1,3) Second paragraph, first sentence, third word: Franchises
(4,1,3) 4th, 1st, 3rd: Industries
(5,2,3) Nothing
(7,1,10) gets "to" but given the rest of the words I think it was meant to end up on "decision" and he accidentally counted the heading.
(5,4,6) Make
(8,2,4) Ethical

F I N D M E
Which I guess we did, we just hadn't solved the puzzle all the way.
I'm going to send an ask on tumblr and see what happens.

Great work, finnK!

So, you've successfully found the correct answer to the remaining piece of the puzzle.

This is good. We can now continue.

Watch closely the sources of information you already have, as your true goal will be revealed soon.

Because you have passed my test, I will be able to assist you. That does not, however, mean that anything will be easy.

If it were an easy Fix, it would be done already.

Await further correspondence.

The post was tagged with "Information gathering would be a pertinent course of action in the meantime" and a number of the other sites have been updated. Sam Marconi's posted something, Tribune has some more obits, the TungstenPSA's air level alert is yellow. Something seemed fishy about those 3 deaths of those 20-somethings that were reported in the Tribune, and I sent an email to Marconi and the Tribune about it. I'll see if anyone replies.

Greetings and salutations to all the people down this rabbit hole.

So, I've got a few thoughts.

First of all, maybe I'm missing something, but we still don't have a clear picture of what the Neo-American continent is or why there are city-states named after chemical elements there (I remember at least one other city being mentioned). Supposedly we are dealing with a dystopia here, but I'd still like to know the details, maybe we should ask some of our friends on the other side. I'd also like to learn more about the air in Tungsten city, because this issue seems to be emphasized, with the colour alert system and whatnot. I remember black smoke coming from some ruins near the city being mentioned, but why is it permanent and what are these ruins?

And another thing I found strange is this:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Inter-city transportation is handled by the Tungsten City Department of Transportation, and available transportation includes rail and/or streetcars, rapid-transit lines, and small personal vehicles that can be rented from the appropriate authority.

Why no private cars? Is it such a big deal? And "the appropriate authority" seems to be LaFontaine Industries, considering what booba had to say.

I also asked Mr. Marconi to investigate those mysterious deaths, but he didn't reply yet. I'm probably going to ask him about the aforementioned things when he does.

Still monitoring the various sites and twitters for updates. In the latest round of obituaries, we see another glimpse into their society.
Quote:
Leslie Derringer was born, the child of Margaret Derringer, Amie Lemaine, and Lucas Hoyt.

Three parents? It's not the first case of a multi-spouse marriage. (For example, Councilman Jesse Raymond lives in the East District with his husband and his wife.)

The PSA twitter feed revealed the new air quality alert system:
Quote:
Blue: Air filtration system is operating at 100% functionality. Air is safe, no precautions necessary.
Green: Air quality is high. Precautions need only be taken for infants, elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.
Yellow: Caution should be exercised. Report to a clinic if respiratory symptoms occur.
Orange: Air quality low. Precautions should be taken to avoid breathing pollutants. Stay indoors if possible.
Red: Urgent! Air quality hazardous. Stay indoors unless an emergency requires you to leave.

while Chairman Neilson adds his own commentary about those levels on his blog:
Quote:
Red - Filters are malfunctioning or pollution is too high for them to keep up and air could be really hazardous.
Orange - Filters are not working efficiently or are malfunctioning, and you should stay indoors unless there's an emergency.
Yellow - Filters are highly functional, but some pollution is evident. You should try to stay indoors as much as possible...
Green - Filters are working at high efficiency and no precautions are needed, which is pretty much the best case scenario.
Blue - Filters working at 100% capacity, as though that ever happens.

So the air is rarely safe, if ever? Sounds like a lovely place to live and work.
btw, the most recent condition was
CURRENT AIR QUALITY ALERT LEVEL: YELLOW Exercise Caution

From the Tribune (I mentioned this in my previous post):
Quote:

-2K790 ruins outside the city begin producing thick smog. Illness and mortality rates in the city skyrocket.

This also might be relevant:
Quote:

-2K899 Espinoza Industries' medical science team develops a vaccine that would effectively halt the centuries-long leprosy pandemic; unfortunately, the vaccine was very expensive upon development and it took several more years before the city's general population had access to it.

A centuries long pandemic? I'd really like to learn more about Tungsten's history.

Anyway, Mr. Marconi didn't respond to my e-mail yet and as far as I'm concerned, there were no updates anywhere. Hope it doesn't take much longer.

All's been pretty quiet in Tungsten City lately. The last I heard from Sam Marconi was last week (the 24th) when I emailed him. I asked if he was available to investigate these strange deaths of young people recently, who all have some sort of relation to the West District:

James Lowe Harrison, 22
Katheryn May Keillor, 21
Leslie Derringer, 21
Hannah Grace Smith, 18
Levi Zedock George, 19 (from East District, but killed in West District)
Jacqueline Kaitlin Schroeder, 19 (died in Eastside Memorial Hospital,
but from West District)

These names were all listed in the obits of the Tungsten Tribune. The first 3 were all killed on the same day, which I would think would be considered newsworthy, but the Tribune didn't report anything about it. I got an answer back from Sam the same day but haven't heard from him since.

A couple of new posts on the Tribune tumblr this morning. Naturally, I attacked the puzzle first:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
simple ROT-11 and the numerals don't change:
"There ain't a person in this city who hasn't worked hard to get where they are in life. I just want to make sure that everybody gets what they work for, no matter who they are. Equality is my top priority." - Governor LaFontine, from his 3K8 campaign speech.
(typo is part of the original text)

Just for historical reference, it is currently year 3K17 and LaFontaine was elected governor in 3K8.

This is also odd...

Leslie Derringer - West District
Leslie Derringer, 21, passed away D20M53K17 in the Westside neighborhood of West District. Leslie was born D21M92K995, the child of Margaret Derringer, Amie Lemaine, and Lucas Hoyt.
They are survived by their parents; two uncles, Jude and Korie Lemaine; an aunt, Chloe Hoyt; and six cousins.

3 parents? A Lesbian couple and the surrogate father?

Hey guys, I'm new to this ARG and it looks really cool! I was wondering, though.

Do we players have a chatroom to converse through, like an IRC room? Or do we just communicate through here?
