1642: All finished.....

This day in 1642 this happend:

Parliament declares that the King, "seduced by evil councillors", is intent on making war. Henceforward, no order is valid unless it comes from both Houses of Parliament. The King declares that any obedience given to Parliament's Militia Ordinance is treasonous.

27th May: Piedro posted later on his FB page that he was again available to chat @ http://webchat.freenode.net/ [channel input Sinople]

Possibly the Red 'Bonanno' slide reffies 2Rooks(Towers): Bonanno Pisano = the attributed Architect of the leaning Pisa Tower plus the Leda & the Swan.jpg=William Butler Yeats' poem in his famous "The Tower" volume. Maybe also noteworthy is that G. Bonanno is pictured in front of Butler Library on the CU campus?

A group of us were chatting online earlier today, going over both puzzles & we think we have come up with a potential solution. I submitted a solution to the Innocence puzzle to Pietro. Haven't heard back from him yet but will let you know what he says. Here is the gist of our conversation...

First off...Pietro confirmed there was nothing hidden in the butterfly photos:

Quote:

[01:27] <Pietro> A free time saver - I am not one for steganography. It is too time consuming...
...
[01:30] <Pietro> I am more about word play, interpretation of information and decoding something that is obviously encoded.
[01:30] <LeviVoland> Affirmative, to the film quote.
[01:30] <Pietro> This does not mean I will not hide things within messages, but steganography? Too much hassle and hard work for such a simple puppeteer as myself...

As to what is expected as an answer...
From online chats with Pietro (this one is off IRC):
Quote:

[01:22] <Pietro> For each King, there are three places to find.
[01:22] <Pietro> 2 of these overlap.
[01:22] <Pietro> The places can be found by fining connections.
[01:22] <Pietro> finding*
[01:23] <Pietro> Between names, items, themes, concepts, art, etc...
[01:23] <Pietro> Once three places have been found, the court can be found centrally to these three places.
[01:23] <LeviVoland> Places and pieces are related but separate?
[01:23] <Pietro> One map.
[01:24] <Pietro> One set of pieces, cornerstones if you will, are your unique piece-place.
[01:24] <Pietro> The other two sets are in the same places.
[01:24] <Pietro> Three places, 6 pieces.
[01:24] <LeviVoland> Aha.
[01:24] <epiphany> interesting
[01:24] <Pietro> The Two bishops will be found together, the two knights will be found together, the two rooks will be found together.
[01:25] <Pietro> *two
[01:25] <LeviVoland> And our flocks, as it were...
[01:25] <LeviVoland> Are of our own choosing?
[01:26] <Pietro> Each piece needs to be named, to be understood and to be placed correctly. 1 concept = 1 piece = 1 person.

So...what is required from each frame is the name of the piece (there are two but they'll be the same), the location & the concept that embodies that piece.

Pietro also provided a clue...the Kings chose to find out a clue about the Bishops. It was:
Quote:
[01:41] <Pietro> Bishops ar true people of 'the cloth', moving unusally diagonally. hey embody ideas and when ideas are needed to be made more permnent, cloth doesn't cut it. Scissors beats cloh and what beats scisors? Up to you to decide...

More on that in a moment.

So. On to FRAME 1. This is specific to the Innocence puzzle:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The frame shows a moth (Amphipyra effusa...from the Mediterranean) & an image of Eos, Greek goddess of the Dawn.

Proposed pieces: Knights (play on the word "night" for the moth...& Eos' sons were warriors).
Proposed location: Mt Olympus (site of Greek gods+ moth comes from Mediterranean)
Proposed concept: scissors (see rock, paper, scissors clue above)

FRAME 2
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Frame shows the painting Adoration of the Magi by Botellici & there is a Bible verse within Piero's robe. The answer to the question is in reference to that: shelter. Note that Magi weren't priests...they were wise men or magicians, etc...often within a religious setting but they weren't priests themselves.

Proposed pieces: Rooks ("shelter"...members of the Medici house are painted in the image as the Magi...Piero (Peter..."Rock") is in the centre)
Proposed location: Florence (Uffizi Gallery, where this painting is housed, is in Florence + the Medicis were political rulers in Florence)
Proposed concept: rock

Alternatively, the pieces here may be Bishops. However, this is Innocence's unique clue & thus, unique location (experience has a different location). From Pietro's chats & his instructions to the Kings, it appears the Bishops & Knights from both sides are in the same locations...so by deduction, this is Rook...which fits in with "shelter."

FRAME 3
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

This frame includes a London area code broken into two parts (NW10 3PH) with a number between them. The area code directs to the suburb of Brent, London. The number refers to an inspection report for a nursery school on College Rd in Brent. Note that Pietro has mentioned in several chats that he works with children...& in one chat he specified he worked at secondary level (college?).

The Hebrew text under the image translates as "Evehn Ma'asoo HaBonim Hayesah L'rosh Peenah" or "the stone spurned by the builders ended up the foundation stone." This is in reference to Psalm 118:22 & 1 Peter 2:7, which both mention capstones.

Proposed pieces: Bishops (deduction, higher learning, capstone being the head or top)
Potential location: London (address)
Potential concept: paper

Potential alternative piece: Rook. "Capstone" is also the name of a Govt cryptology experiment "That was based around a PCMCIA card known as Fortezza. Which is Italian for...fortress" (according to Levi...site is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capstone_(cryptography)). However this clue is shared with Experience & therefore is a Bishop or Knight?

So from those three locations, once can deduce the unique location of the Court of Innocence.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

By triangulating the three locations...that is, connecting them (forms a triangle) & running a line from each corner to the middle point of the opposite side...the intersecting lines all fall at the location of Venice.

Therefore, the Court of Innocence is at Venice.

Confused yet? lol Thoughts? haven't heard back from Pietro but will relay what he says.

Another thing that kept coming up in our discussion was that cup of coffee & the coffee stains in the puzzles. You'll note they're slightly different in each puzzle. My 15 year old took about 30 seconds to come up with an idea...lol. I'll simply cut and paste the resulting Skype chat (excuse my incredibly poor spelling & slightly muddled thought process...I normally type as I chat):

[28/05/12 9:09:08 PM] epiphany_101_: I don't know when it was added

I don't know that it has any bearing on the puzzles at the moment...but it might explain some of Pietro's odd behaviour in chat at different time & it ties in with his references to time/"heat" (which are actually days)/cycles/8 levels etc

Something to think about for now?May tie in with timed moves in the future? Pietro mentioned that once the pieces were in place, time would be important...&, of course, Chess is often timed.

G'Luck on your entry, epiphany! Norman Bishop Hartnell was a man "of the cloth" to the Queen. EDIT: Is there now just an exact location left to find to position him?

Norman Hartnell spent most of his time making dresses for the Queen on 26 Bruton Street as I have stated in a previous post.

Sorry I haven't been helping much, got distracted as one does Wink

Ok...sorry it's taken me a day or two to post back.

I received an email saying:

Quote:

Incorrect, incorrect, incorrect.
ALL images and places are found within Albion's shores...

Which confirms all the places are in London or England.

I know Levi submitted an answer with the pieces based in London...will let him post his info.

I sent an email to PR detailing collected theories that some of us hashed out through Skype, IRC, FB chat, and G+. We tried to make everything as coherent and detailed as possible... Long story short, this is what we put together:

To: Pietro Radillo
Subject: The Court of the Crimson King
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"The time has come," the Walrus said, "to talk of many things;
Of shoes, and ships, and sealing wax. Of cabbages and Kings!"

I have, with the aid of my followers, found three locations that I believe answer the challenge that you have set forth.

Knights and bishops of both sides convene together as understood of olden days.

Their names will lead the way for locating their spaces.

Using your cornerstones of your palace, you will be able to centre upon your point.

Your first clue reads: Two pieces' "names" are here with you having to seek a little further - what do these two have in common? don't stand too still though...

There is a photograph of George A. Bonanno at Columbia University. Heeding your advice to "look closer..." reveals a link in GB's left eye:

v=wmCmThpe5-U&feature=fvwrel

The link leads to a 17:00 minute video of Bonanno talking about "Life after Loss"

There is a painting in George's right eye: "Leda and the Swan" by Antonia de Coriggio.

Leda was impregnated by Zeus (in the form of a swan) while already with child from her mortal husband. As a result, Leda gave birth to one half-divine son and one fully mortal son. The half-divine son would go on to sacrifice his immortality to provide salvation for his mortal brother, whom he loved. Life after loss...

The connection, "Life after Loss," provides insight into the themes of grief, sacrifice, and salvation. These are intangibles, ideas that must be illustrated through tales woven like cloth.

We believe this clue to reference the bishops; men of cloth, men of ideas, men of faith. Our location for the bishops is the Collegiate Church of St Peter at Westminster (aka Westminster Abbey). We believe that this location embodies the themes of grief, sacrifice, and salvation as fully as any could hope to.

Bishops. Westminster Abbey.

Consilience: Innocence clue contains a painting, The Adoration of the Magi, depicting the three kings kneeling at Mary's feet, having come to see her newborn son, Jesus. He was born of divine means, and carries with him a theme of sacrifice (giving up his life to forgive the sins of all who would accept his forgiveness.). In the robe of one of the Magi can be found a reference to a biblical verse, Deuteronomy 32:37-38. The question leads "let them be your?" The verse ends with either "refuge" or "shelter" depending on the translation. The story of Jesus parallels that of Pollux (divine birth, sacrifice for greater good, Life after Loss).

Your second clue reads: Two pieces are here, both are the same though - the family will take you there: Where is it?

The graphic is eight squares in an arc around a central circle; the first and last squares are labeled "Father" and "Mother" respectively, and have arrows that point to the central circle. Beneath is a short phrase in Hebrew. The inscription reads NH (KCVO) 12/6/1901 - 8/6/1979.

The inscription refers to Norman Bishop Hartnell, Knight Commander of the Victorian Order (12 June, 1901 - 8 June, 1979), who served as dressmaker to both the Queen and the Queen Mother. Through following the connection to the Royal Family, we found ourselves led to Buckingham Palace. The translation of the Hebrew refers to the verse "the stone that the builders refused has now become the capstone." Capstone can alternately be read as cornerstone. The use of cornerstone, the outer squares being the rook squares, and the curious fact that Bishop is a Knight all lead us to believe that this is the Red Rook.

Red Rooks. Buckingham Palace.

Your third clue reads: 2 pieces are within this frame - their name will help the king with the map

Beneath this is the phrase "Automated Hospital Delivery and Asset Management Services"

A google search on this phrase brings back www.aethon.com as the top result. Their logo is a stylized horse head that looks much like a knight. Aethon is one of the four horses of Helios. All four can be found at a fountain at the corner of Piccadilly Circus and Haymarket, in the form of a statue called The Four Bronze Horses of Helios. This fountain serves as the location and symbol for our knights.

Knights. Fountain at Piccadilly Circus and Haymarket.

Consilience: Innocence clue one contains a photograph of a moth, Ampiphyra effusa. Clue implores "names are so important, no?" Inside the "o" is a painting of Eos. Ampiphyra effusa was formerly named Pyrois effusa. Pyrois is another of Helios' four horses. Eos is the sister of Helios. Another clue leading to the fountain at Piccadilly Circus and Haymarket.

Central to these points appears to be the Royal Academy of Engineering, which we are concluding to be the location of the Red King's court.

Hoping to control the storm,

LV (RK)

Good theories? Stretches? Absolute rubbish?

Pietro weighs in:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Rooks - incorrect.
Bishops - incorrect.
Knights - Correct. Who are to be your knights?

You asked for a bishop clue. Some things were mising thugh, no?
Enjoy.

Puppeteer.

The bishop clue that PR refers to is the one in Amandel's post a couple of replies above this one.

It seems that we kings are to appoint our court as we discover them. I asked PR how much time I had to make my decision. I was informed that appointments are considered to be a part of the total solution, so for completion Experience and Innocence will both need to have their back rows in order.

So...green turn again so to speak...lol (& I should point out to RedMosquito that without cabbages, Kings would go hungry! Raspberry ).

From the letters missing in the clue about Bishops that Pietro provided, we realised all the answers we're looking for were:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
statues in London

We already have Knights, as confirmed in RedMosquito's email. That leaves Bishops & Rooks...plus the site of the Green/Red Courts.

So...firstly Bishops.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Experience's side of the puzzle provides themes of grief/coping with loss, virtue, divinity, art, professional pursuits. Innocence's side provides themes of divinity, convergence of nations (the Magi came from different locations), shelter, art. We know we're looking for a statue.

One that seems to fit with all these ideas is the Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Memorial. Queen Victoria seemed to display an almost excessive level of grief over Albert's death & she spent the rest of her life in mourning. From wiki: "the memorial consists of an ornate canopy or pavilion, in the style of a Gothic ciborium over the high altar of a church"...& this ciborium was designed "to protect a statue of the Prince." We have depicted...four virtues, four countries, muses, artists, professions, etc. It seems to fit with all the various references & themes the two sides of this clue provide.

So the proposed solution for Bishops on both sides is Albert Memorial, Kensington Gardens.

Next...Green Rooks:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Again, the clue for this is the postcode & inspection report. This leads to College Green Nursery School. There is a College Green in Westminster. In the middle is the statue Knife Edge Two Piece: http://www.henry-moore.org/works-in-public/world/uk/london/parliament-square/knife-edge-two-piece-1962-65-lh-516.

So the proposed solution for Green Rooks is Knife Edge Two Piece, College Green, Westminster.

These locations give us a nice triangle on a map. We know the central location indicates where Court should be set up. So, for Innocence, Green Court should approx be at:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Green Park, London

Still waiting for an answer from Pietro but will let you know what he says.

Regardless of whether it's correct or not, the Kings on both sides need to allocate players for each piece (2 bishops, knights & rooks for each side). Is there anyone who specifically wants to be considered? We'd hate to put your name forward if you didn't actually want to play. We have no idea the level of interaction required by the players...but we do have to nominate people. Can we have a show of hands? lol

I'll volunteer but if someone more deserving wants a spot and there aren't any left, they can take mine. Although I would like to be a knight, I'd happily step aside and become a pawn. So think of me as a volunteer substitute.

Possible Solution for Experience Group

Here a possible solution for the experience group. Since it is still speculation I will not use spoiler tags:

1. Bishops: As we know we are looking for statues. There are statues of "Grief" and "Leda" in the Bishops (!!) Park in London. So I guess this is the place we are looking for.

2. Rooks: The parents of Norman Hartell (Mother and Father) were publicans and owners of the Crown & Sceptre, a inn at Treatham Hill 2a. Oue second place. How the Cornerstones are related is not clear for me. I guess it is just a hint for the rooks.

3. Knights: Alraedy confirmed: Picadilly circus.

All three places form a perfect triangle and the center would be: somewhere in the Battersea Park (!?). Maybe there is a more exact location.

BTW, I would be happy to be a part of the experienced team, even though RL leaves not much time.

Oh wow, Azuz...good find about the Bishop. And a much better fit than the previous one. Pietro hasn't answered yet but I think you've found it - it just clicks.

going to resubmit...

Wow you guys are steaming along nicely, I'll put my hand up for whatever is available. Although I will be sans Internet the week beginning 23th July.

Wild stab in the dark I wonder if the only thing we only need from Hartnell's parents is the Crown & Sceptre which could lead to:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Lady_of_Westminster or

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crown_Jewels_of_the_United_Kingdom

EDIt: Crown Jewels are held in the Tower of London, does Tower = Rook?
