Email from Dale: Dale´s night at Wes´

That combination seems more and more urgent.
Dale had a horrible night:

Patrik:
Well, another damn sleepless night it looks like. 3AM here in Jersey and I'm sitting at the computer so exhausted I can barely see and yet, I just can't sleep. I don't know how much longer I can keep this up.

I didn't have any luck over at Wes' place tonight. I can't shake the feeling
that we are so close with the safe combination but are just missing something obvious. I even printed out and took along the image of the strange torus with all the numbers in it that I found by searching for that rodin + sunflower combination, along with the original pictorial clue Wes left us. Several of you out there sent the torus picture to me by e-mail as well. I sat there and stared at that picture for a long time, just hoping that I'd have one of those "Aha!" moments and the combination would pop out at me. But I tried everything I could think of from the picture with no luck, so we're still missing something! What's missing??

Here's the various combinations of digits I tried today:

9-23-97
9-25-97
7-43-70
12-48-70
7-48-75
12-43-75
12-48-7
1-24-87
12-4-87
12-45-78

I wanted to look around the place some more after trying the safe but wasn't able to, as I heard someone coming into the front door of Wes' shop while I was still sitting before the safe. Luckily I was in the back room of Wes' office so
I was able to get the flashlight shut off and hide behind Wes' desk before
whoever it was came in that far. I really wanted to try and sneak a peek and see who it was, but I didn't dare as I crouched there and listened to the footsteps come closer down the hall and then into Wes' office.
Strangely enough, whoever it was never turned the light on and only walked a few steps into the office before turning around and going back out. After a few minutes I heard them leave back out the front. I waited a few more minutes crouched behind the desk. As I emerged from hiding and turned my flashlight back on, I noticed that I had left the papers with the images on them lieing next to the safe. In the darkness, though, I don't think whoever that was could have spotted them. After waiting another few minutes, I got the Hell out of
there.

Unfortunately, Sam didn't have any better luck with Phyllis Willingham over at the Hollow Needle. In fact, I'd say he had a worse time than me. Sam said she was her usual charming self, only magnified 100 times. She did nothing but complain about his handling of the auction, the quality of the images, and even the amounts the items sold for. "Do you know how much I could have gotten for that Fairy book?" she asked me. By the time he got around to trying to talk to her about the manuscript page, she was in no mood to even listen to any of his ideas. He tried to get just a little insistent in hopes of getting her to give him a chance and she flew off the handle and began screaming at him to get out.
She even told him, "You're no better than that horrible Dale Sprague. He
probably put you up to this. That fool should be mourning his wife and child instead of running around telling ghost stories and acting like a loon."

With that, Sam said he lost it and started screaming back at her. I really wish he wouldn't have, but he claims he couldn't let her get away with calling me crazy. He said by the time he got out the door she was actually on the phone calling the Police! Talk about Deja vu! Oh well, I guess his little plan to get our hands on the manuscript isn't going to work out. Back to the drawing board.

I guess I need to try and get some sleep, as futile as it will probably be.
Stay in touch.

Dale
