the thing that's keeping me a bit distanced from great enthusiasm toward this movie is that jumpscare toward the end. it's just such a cheap scare, and if there's one, I'm sure there's more. That being said, It doesn't look too bad. I'll probably give it a shot.

Trailers aren't movies.

right, but a trailer is parts from a movie, it showcases what the movie is without giving too much away. I can get a good idea of what the movie will be like from watching the trailer, and form an opinion based off of that.

There are a LOT of bad trailers out there. Hollywood tends to create trailers for the movie the studio wishes it had rather than the movie it actually has. And horror movies are the worst of the lot when it comes to that.

Also, jumpscares get used a lot in trailers because it's fast way to scare the audience and say in a shorthand way "This movie is scary!" Really good scary moments are about the long game, building up tension and setting the audience on a knife's edge. You just can't do that in a trailer, so they choose the jumpscare because it sells the audience quickly and gets them excited.

I'm glad that Vincent D'Onofrio (the professor who was explaining how the demon functions) is getting more work.

I would have found this scarier, except for that incredibly lame mask. It's like Slendy bought a Scream mask and decided to go trick or treating. (For souls naturally.)

It's like they took Slendy's MO and slapped on the Weeping Angels' abilities. "The image of an angel becomes an angel" and all of that.

Wow, they seem to even capture the audio distortion you see in earlier Slenderman vids!

Sinister: 2012 Movie
Is this Hollywwod film a Rip-off of the mythos or are the similarities a coincidence?

So, a friend showed me this trailer the other day. It's for an upcoming horror film called Sinister. It stars Ethan Hawke and Vincent D'Onofrio. My friend showed it to me because he thought it was very similar to an internet series I'm a big fan of and wanted to know my opinion on it. I have a pretty strong one.

So, yeah. A lot of similarities to the Slender Man Mythos and Marble Hornets particularly. To me the most blatant are the looking for the monster in the background, and the symbol that shows up in the films. The monster's design also reminded me Slendy.

I personally think it's a bit too similar in certain areas to call it a coincidence. I'm also pretty sure the popularity of Marble Hornets and Slender Man have caught the eye of mainstream horror filmmakers so I wouldn't be surprised if someone involved in the production of this said "Hey, let's do something like that one internet show thing". It feels to me that's what must've happened. However, the Slender Man mythos didn't create many of the tropes this movie is going for so I can't say for sure.

What do people here think?
