That's reasonable.

Honestly, I haven't read all the previous posts in this topic yet, but as the topic wants to know what freaks ME out, I can still write my personal view anyway. Razz

I'm actually quite hard to scare, most horror movies and games don't frighten me at all. But the Operator frequently does that, mainly for very clever story and staging tricks. Needless to say, explaining them will be OOG and you shouldn't read it if you fear illusions being dismantled.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

1) The "Where is Waldo" has a very creepy side effect. Spending that much time on looking for TO in the clips makes you see TO everywhere - even in real live. That wouldn't work if TO would always stand in the open and clearly visible. Every shadow is suddenly a potential danger, and you aren't safe anywhere.
2) His teleporting, which surely originated from the limited motivity of the OT doll, does also a lot for feeling insecure everywhere. A closed door is no longer something that can make you feel safe, even at your own home...
3) Most of the time, we can hardly make out the details of TO. He's either blurry, only visible for a tiny moment or the view is otherwise distorted. The distortion is not just a story element and a way to foreshadow his arrival. Not clearly seeing the danger makes your mind go wild. No crafted thing could ever look so scary as what your mind can potentially make out of something that you can't see clearly. It adresses your worst fears.

The third point is actually quite often used in visual horror stories of any kind. For example, gamers might know the noise effects and distortions in the Silent Hill games, which work almost the same.
But for that reason, I actually dislike an Entry that many of you love. Storywise, Entry 43 is quite interesting, but the visuals totally ruined TO for me. Ever since then, he's only half as scary to me. Why? Because for a far too long time, and most of it with very few distortions, we could clearly see him. You saw close-ups of a non-moving, lifeless puppet standing there for a far too long time to not notice it. They really should have arranged that differently. At least with more distortions, or better Alex leaving behind his camera in the distance so that we only see it from afar. Please don't hate me for this if you like Entry 43, that's just my personal view. Confused

Honestly without the distortion, especially the audio distortion, TO isn't as scary. The best for me was
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
#51 because of that absolutely grating noise that accompanied his "HAY GUYS WHAT'CHA DOING" appearance at the end made it much more frightening.
Some of the noises sound like TO is actively making them instead of just causing noise distortion, and that makes them stick.

A big part of MH is what they can do with sound. TTA's haunting audio tends to stick with you, especially things like "Sidenote" and "Reference."

I agree, it's not just the visual distortion. Should have mentioned that. Smile

Weren't there 1 or 2 times where The Operator mimicked Jay mockingly? That qualifies as a freaky sound, doesn't it?

Or Inquiry, which I still argue has the best soundtrack for any creative work ever made.

Inquiry was impressive in the way it transitioned from haunting ambiance to that distressed melody, but if MH was to really make a purchasable OST and release it, the most listened to thing on my playlist would be the reversed Beethoven track from Forecast.

I cannot tell you how freaked out I was when I went and rewatched that. I totally didn't hear that the first time at all.

I guess someone else could have been hiding in the basement before The Operator appeared, but it didn't sound like any other character.

well wasn't the "hello" that was murmured back to him from entry 16 or 18? i know in the basement he says it but i don't remember the hello repeated back to him sounding the same pitch

could have been tim

i dunno. it was probably the operator but an idea they scrapped since him having no mouth makes no sense for him to be talking

It doesn't make sense for him breathing either.

Or seeing, but it was established he could see in Entry #1. I don't think they've scrapped that yet.

Also there may have been some Operator noises in Entry #29.

We can't be entirely sure if it's "seeing" in the ordinary sense in Entry #1. He did notice Alex, but we don't know if he heard him, saw him smelled him or just felt/knew he was there.
TO turning his "face" towards Alex may just mean he wants Alex to know that he knows where Alex is...

On the other hand... if "Always watching" (and similar statements) refers to TO (and not to TTA), this would kind of imply he can see.

Maybe TO has sonar.

I mean, it had to navigate those tunnels without light somehow...
