The Rook Puzzle

This was the answer I came to with the Rook Puzzle, which I sent to Pietro.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The morse code reads: Straight Lines for Rooks to the Moon

The J^ code is a substitution for the 0's and 1's of binary, and when
run through a binary decoder reads "binary in a different form."

This may be nowhere near the right answer, bit it's my first answer,
and I hope you enjoy following it along.

In another form, in that most beloved form of music, binary form
refers to a type of music where two sections of music are repeated in
some sort of A-B pattern.

Sonatas tend to follow this pattern, usually presenting a theme in
exposition, developing it, coming back to the exposition with a
recapitulation, sometimes with a coda, sometimes not. It's often
elaborations on that binary music form.

Beethoven was one of those who really, well, set the tone for the
shape of sonatas.

So with that, I present you with the first sonata I could think of
with my gaze in a straight line to the moon.

Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQVeaIHWWck

And Pietro's reply was:

Quote:
A very thorough answer: by blitzing through the answer, you would have missed out potential details that may prove more useful later on...
Enjoy your success. No prize, as another was faster, but well done anyhow.

The emphasis on "blitzing" seems interesting to me. Also the sense I get is that some of the details I hit on might be important later.

But there's that!

Congratz. Pietro also accepted my answer containing an addn'l reference for the Morse code. Believe he might be using 'blitzing' here b/c the WWII Coventry blitzkrieg was code named Operation Mondscheinsonate (Moonlight Sonata).

Had a chat with Sergei today. Not only did I give him Green's move but I tried to tease out a bit of a response about Vlad & their situation as children. It seems he's a bit bitter.

The chat is here: http://pastebin.com/1WbrE3DF

He has a point...why should one apologise simply for being? However, one can't hold grudges into the afterlife...can they? I wonder if it would be worth bringing Uncle Ruka up with either Vlad or Sergei...Uncle Ruka was the gay uncle of the brothers. Sergei idolised him as a child as he saw him to be everything he wanted to be - he felt a kinship with him. However Ruka essentially ignored him. On the other hand, Ruka idolised Vlad in his way - Vlad was abused by Ruka (Nabokov's book "Lolita" draws on some of this for inspiration) & Ruka made Vlad his sole heir. Teamed with a homophobic father, Ruka was one of the driving forces behind Vlad's almost fanatical homophobia. I wonder if making both sides aware of the root of their mutual discontent would help matters?

***in other news***
Pietro has sent an email. For those who didn't get it, it's below.

Quote:
Players: both ladies and gentlemen, are you sitting comfortably?
Yes?
Good.

Now listen.

There are two kings, and they are moving their sides around, having had their sides solve puzzles so far. The knights, bishops and rooks have all had their chances to impress.
The pawns of both sides will soon be engaged...

But this is where a simple question is now thrown into the mix, for everyone, aside form the chess game. A simple thought that will echo in your mind for a while.
I do NOT want an answer straight away. Think about it.

Then think some more.

Who are you?

You do not even have to reply, but, and this is important, I'd like you to ponder how much of your life is controlled by others.
And controlled by you.

Think.

Think some more.

Should you want to share your thoughts and ideas, put them up on my wall. You don't have to. But please, don't send them here. On the FB wall* for everyone, or just for yourself.

For every true answer on the wall, I will answer a question put to me by that 'poster'. Privately.

About anything.

The game, the story, the reasons...

There is no time limit on this challenge as it were. Apologies for the restless sleep it may cause some of you...

The Puppeteer.

*Hate FB? Get someone else to post it there with your name. It is a useful tool, but soon will be used less... when the game becomes more... intense...

It would be worth forming a list of questions to ask him so we don't waste opportunities on duplicate questions, etc. What do others think?

Due to a minor dental op have just now been able to dive into epiphany's update above & on the prev page. Both Superb with so much back story! A list of questions sounds sensible. Also mentioning below why the rooks may have gotten Morse from Pietro in our puzzle in case those "potential details may prove useful later on".

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Why I believe the Moonlight Sonata is the specific answer you are seeking is because Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata was translated into Morse code and sent to the moon via E.M.E. (Earth-Moon-Earth radio transmission). There is a beautiful 'moon–altered' score to hear if you wish that link or any others. Please just ask.

Had a facebook convo with Pietro this afternooon, and it was requested that I share.

Quote:

P: Good day to you sir. Are you well?

SV: As well as can be expected. I just got home from church and have an hour or so before work.
And yourself?

P: How was the religious organisation?

SV: It was great, as it usually is. My pastor is pretty awesome.

P: I have two companions, either side of me, who have differing, extreme views on religion. Id caution you in advance of talking to them wihtout hindisght about who they are wnad what they have endured..
Glad to hear about having an awesome guide..

SV: I would be very interested in engaging in a conversation with them both on the topic sometime. I love intellectual conversation, especially on topics that don't necessarily have any scientific basis. It's fun to hear differing views.
How have you three been keeping yourselves entertained?

P: 68 churches, quite a choice where you live...
http://kankakee.areaconnect.com/churches.htm

SV: But as of this week, only one in my denomination, and only two that are open and affirming to LGBT folks.

P: In regards to us 'three', both Sergei and Vladimir amuse themselves with images which require locating. Now, THAT gives me an idea as well...
Thank you.
Sergei is gay, Vladimir is heterosexual and defiantly homophobic.
Both were victims of sexual abuse.
Just a heads up to help others understand their voices as it were. Not to excuse any thoughts or words on their behalf, but to help anyone who feels they are 'aggressive' etc...
Perhaps this could be shared somewhere? A wiki or another UNknown FORUM?

SV: Of course.I will be sure to pass the word along.
;3
Pietro, are you or either of your companions familiar with the book or film 'A Clockwork Orange'?

P: Thank you. I have to go and instruct some now in the art of understanding balances in the world...
All three of us I'd imagine, for my own part, definitely - control, puppeteering etc. What's not to enjoy...
Book is quite different from the film, both good texts in their won right though

SV: It was good speaking with you again. And give my regards to your 'droogs' Sergei and Vladimir. I wish you luck in your endeavors.

P: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Clockwork_Orange and http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066921/
Ah the language of 11-19 year olds...
They are not my 'friends' though, please do not assume that. They are employees...
As such, I hold responsibility for their words, but not their actions after 'work hours' as it were...

Things have been quiet on the PR front - Pietro posted he was going to be away for 48 hours. That's up now, so hopefully more will happen soon. In the meantime, we were left with two images from Vlad & Sergei to interpret plus a question on Pietro's facebook page for those who had already answered the "who are you?" email (plus an invitation for those who haven't answered it, to do so...I posted this email a few posts previously for anyone who didn't get it).

Vlad's facebook page can be found at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Vladimir-Nabakov/387248714673289 and Sergei's facebook page can be found at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Sergei-V/230057837114255 (links to these were found on each sides room...although the link in Experience's room doesn't seem to be working?).

I haven't officially solved Vlad's image because he's the 2nd for Experience & I figured it'd be better if someone from Experience solved it...lol. But there are several copies of the same old map of London online that you can refer to...after that, it's merely a matter of correlating that with a modern day map (& bearing in mind some of the buildings & streets on the old map are now either gone or altered).

Sergei was requesting location, date & time his photo of London City Hall was taken. I managed to get it down to the minute (or very close to).

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
You'll notice an LGBT flag is flying on one of the flagpoles outside the Hall. Sergei has already told us the photo was taken recently. London hosted it's annual London (or World) Pride parade on 7 July (hence the flag). Therefore the date is 7 July, 2012.

Next...location. The photo has been taken from the Thames side of London City Hall. HMS Belfast is permanently anchored in the Thames but is too far round, so the angle would be wrong. The Tower Millennium Pier is directly opposite the Hall but this image seems closer than one afforded by the pier, plus the railings are different. Sergei also advised it was taken from "no fixed structure." Therefore, the only other place this image could have been taken is from a river taxi or one of the tourist boats. Most of the tourist boats are covered & it's difficult to get an outdoor view. The only one with railings similar to the ones seen in the bottom of the image plus the awning that we see in the top right side are the river taxis...specifically, the Thames Clippers (Thames Clippers provide the river taxi service - all others are tourist boats). Therefore, location is the back of a Thames Clipper river taxi (I hypothesised it was a Thames Star Clipper based on the style of the stair railings).

Finally...time. The Thames is tidal. One can see from the tidal line that the river was near low tide. A quick look on "tidetimes" revealed low tide for the Thames at London Bridge (Tower Pier) on 7 July was 11.42am. In the image, one can also see that a London Rib Voyages boat has just left the pier (this is the orange speed boat thing that is zooming off to the left). Their time table for Saturdays show boats leave Tower Pier at 11.15am & 12 noon (both either side of low tide). We already know the photographer is on a river taxi. The timetable for the river taxi shows there are two boats stopping through Tower Pier (the commuter service route is the only one that stops there)...the Westbound (Canary Warf-Central London), which arrives at 11.42 am & 12.02pm, & the Eastbound, which arrives at 11.45am & 12.05pm. Whilst it takes time for the boats to back out from the pier before leaving, it doesn't take particularly long - especially for the small London Rib boats. Therefore, the only time that coincides with the two boat timetables is 12.02pm (note the Rib has already set off & the taxi is either docking or about to leave).

Soooo...the photo was taken on 7 July, 2012, at approx 12.02pm from the back of a Thames Clipper (that had berthed at Tower Millennium Pier on it's way from Canary Warf to London Central).

Sergei has confirmed this is correct & that Innocence may submit another move but judging from the border on Pietro's facebook page (which he has indicated shows whose turn it is), the move is still with Experience? Will wait for them to make their move before submitting another one.

Hey all!

I was asked to pass along a message from Pietro, so here it is:

Quote:
When these words are silenced, I shall return with my brothers-in-arms...

"We have a pretty witty king, And whose word no man relies on, He never said a foolish thing, And never did a wise one"

Until then, my time is drained away by others, those of a foul and tiresome nature...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
This was said by John Wilmot, Second Earl of Rochester, about King Charles II of England.

"When these words are silenced" refers to John Wilmot's date of death, which is July 26th 1680.

Looks like Pietro will be back in six days or so.

I was politely asked to pass this along, so I did. Such a polite group of gentlemen.

Edit: It's actually hex, and it's a passage from The Golden Key by The Brothers Grimm.

In the winter time, when deep snow lay on the ground, a poor boy was forced to go out on a sledge to fetch wood.

Caught Pietro for a chat as I lingered on Facebook! Just a short chat. I'm going to bold the key points

---

Pietro: Good morning Player. How are things with you today?

Me: Good morning, Pietro! It's been a while! Things are pretty good. I'm making a dragon for a friend

Pietro: It has - unfortunately. But now I have returned.
A dragon? Red or white?
... or should that be red or green...?

Me: Purple, in fact, though I do like y ddraig goch

Pietro: Thorn or Firnen...
You like Myrddin as well then?

Me: Indeed!

Pietro: That is pleasance for you then...
For engaging with me, I will inform you of a little assistance. When a box arrives, examine both it and the contents carefully...
Not in the post but where you and your friends gather

For now, I bid adieu

Me: Have a good day!
(And, Thorn!)

---

Thorn and Firnin-->Reference to the Red and Green dragons of the Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini

Go Team Green! (Is it traitorous of me that my favorite dragons are red? I hope not...)

Myrddin-->Welsh madman and prophet, one of the figures who shaped the Merlin myth.

Pietro Radillo on his FB page wrote:
Both sides have been given an extra clue recently - up to them to recall, share with those they choose and spread any words - do enjoy. The room will be amended soon...
Coffee BIG Hi All. Possibly this extra clue was the above one given to (Go-Green-King) epiphany? My email was also titled ""A Boat Beneath a Sunny Sky", a poem from Through the Looking-Glass. It's partly well known for containing "an acrostic. Reading downward, taking the first letter of each line, spells out Liddell's full name".

EDIT: Adding at his FB Pietro Radillo just wrote:
whichever king can get to me the answer to my next puzzle, will move next AND move for their opponent. It will then return to green, red, green, red alternately...But where is the puzzle...? And what IS in the box?

M'kay! The box opened today.

Pietro had a chat with us in Sinople as we waited for the opening of the box.

http://pastebin.com/ahxv6U6B

As Pietro says, once you have the correct contents, you'll know it.

Have some boxy fun!

Reading through the posts and trying to wrap my head around this... Kinda wish I had caught this sooner but I didn't pay much attention till I saw Singer and Ink playing. XD So, catching up and hoping to actually start playing soon-ish.

EDIT: Okay, so I read all 17 pgs, but that doesn't really mean I understand. What's up with rooms/passwords thing? Something about phrases turning into urls, which are... interactive rooms? Flash stuff? But I can't tell which phrases... I'm assumng the box is in the room?

Also just now reading the FB stuff. Mebbie that'll clear some stuff up for me.

I'm willing to be a pawn, if you guys are still looking for one? Still need two, right? Or was that figured out but just not posted?

Finally got to the room and tried opening the box about twenty different ways, eventually ended up with a black screen, and now I get a black screen for the Innocence room too... ARGH.
I also tried forcing my way to the /life.php, /snow.php or whatever URLs, and still got a blackscreen.

I think I broke it, guys. Embarassed

I have a feeling I'm going to be totally useless in this game. >< I guess I'll just go back to lurking then. Since I can't even open a fucking box without messing something up. ARGH.

EDIt: I still can't get it to work, but before it went black on me, I saw a quote of some sort behind the box, anyone tried working it out yet? "...You can't just tip your hand...Then you have never (lived? Seen?)..."

Had a bit of a chat with Pietro just now, the only thing I think was useful was this:

Quote:
As regards to the correct combination to opening the box, as others have already opened, and indeed solved some aspects, I'll inform you that if you were to look through Merchant of Venice, loking for colours, you'll find an order...

I'll hafta look morei nto this later, right now i'm a bit busy with chores and such...
