Balance of Powers (new from PXC team)

Hi all,

My awesomely talented friends (and ex-colleagues) from Mind Candy, creators of Perplex City, have just announced that they're working on a new project. It's not an ARG; more an episodic story.

They're trying to fund it through Kickstarter, so I thought I'd post it here for everyone to have a look at. Sadly, it being ARGFest weekend, I suspect many of you are having way too much fun to be reading the boards (at least I sure hope that's the case) but please do take a look if you can.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/balanceofpowers/balance-of-powers

Enjoy your weekend.

We have an update:

Quote:
Project Update #2: Thank you!

Hello wonderful backers of Balance of Powers!

We're so thrilled that, with your support, we're going to be able to make our dark sinister imaginary world a dark sinister reality. We thank you, the provisional government of Bulgaria thanks you, and the brooding forces of darkness thank you too.

We're working hard to get the infrastructure set up that will let us tell our story. From mailing lists, to setting up a website with hosting and email management, to designing the physical products and, oh yes, finishing up writing the story, there's a lot to get done, and we're grateful for your continued patience, which, to be honest, rivals that of the calmly calculating government of the Kingdom of Texas.

We're planning to release some morsels of story as soon as we can to start letting you into the world. And we're especially excited that so many of you will be able to join us in our live online storytelling – we hope that you'll get as deeply immersed in this world as we have already.

For now, goodbye! Or, as they say in Constanta: помощ!

google translate
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
помощ means "Help"

I realized I didn't post the last couple updates, fFrom kickstarter, over here. They are over on the kck.st page, but in the interest of completeness, here it is. I'm only gonna quote the story stuff. There's other bits, like the part where they have this impressive document, and Anton Bogaty (aka ACB3) working fFor em ... anyway, ONWARD!

And why exactly does the modern girl find Prince James so compelling a
figure? Is it the winning smile, his always-polished attire? Is it the
charmingly open demeanor inherited from his Texan mother, or his
perfect gentlemanly discretion? (No scandals from the White Palace on
his watch!)

Of course not -- no American girl could fall prey to such shallow
fancies. No, our dear prince is more than just that. Beneath his royal
exterior, James is a man driven by a desire to see his country remain
pure to its spirit, eschewing the populist follies of Europe and the
Southern continents. No future king has ever shown such fervent
dedication to our founding ideals. Though if we're very honest with
ourselves, it certainly helps that the cameras love him as much as we
do.

There are two people sitting at the far table in the Cafe des Anglais, a man and a woman, both of them in their sixties, both dressed well but not obtrusively. Husband and wife? No, the body language is not quite right; they are neither at ease with each other nor obviously hostile. Brother and sister? Perhaps that, although he is fair-haired and pale and she is dark-haired and tan. Old friends, maybe, but they do not laugh. Colleagues.

"Do you know what they have?" he asks.

"The Prussians? Better question: do *they* know what they have?" she smiles, stirs her tea. Her voice is crisp, amused, cut-glass English.

"We're all looking for answers here. There's no need to pretend to be stupid." His accent is very faintly foreign, but hard to place. His face is perfectly impassive.

She meets his gaze, then drops her eyes. First hint of nerves. "It's evidence. Of whatever's going on out at sea and…"

"And?"

"And the last time it happened. And what happened afterwards," she speaks a little too quickly, as if glad to be rid of the words.

"Ahh. Yes, then we certainly do have to get it."

Her hand shakes a little, stirring her tea.

"Send Hausmann," he says at last, "he likes a little challenge."

Hey look! It's a name! I wonder if Haussmann also goes by Haußmann. Because the eszett is cool =)

It's here!

Hoody hoo!!!!

Balance of Powers is upon us!!!

The main site is unveiled! http://www.balanceofpowers.org/

We also have a Twitter fFeed, with nothing posted yet. http://twitter.com/balanceofpowers

I don't think we need copy every post directly (yet). But here's the About Page:

Quote:
Balance of Powers is a dark new alternate-history world from the team that wrote Perplex City: Adrian Hon, Andrea Philips, David Varela, and Naomi Alderman. Follow the free-to-read story online, or subscribe for only $17 for access to the story before anyone else, with additional exclusive behind-the-scenes commentary and extra content.

Our four main characters journey across a Cold War-era world a little like our own -- but also darkly different. Their stories converge at a strange city on stilts called Midway; a place between places, where the balance of powers will be decided.

The Bulgarian ambassador is found eviscerated in his London quarters, and Major Sonja Slade of the Prussian Army searches for his killer while trying to forget her own ties to the dead man.

Kitty Kinsey travels all the way from the 39 United States to clear her father of unspeakable allegations, and discovers that old powers are already lying in wait for her.

John Noon thinks he's just an ordinary insurance clerk, but as he investigates a sunken supertanker, his strange dreams hint at something he's not being told.

Hausmann, an ex-spy, thinks he knows just how to look after himself. But when he asks one question too many, he'll find out there's much more to fear from his past than he ever imagined.

Someone is pulling the strings to bring these four together. The Great Powers thirst for war once again. But for what purpose?

There was a war involving the Bulgarians, the Prussians, and the British. Prussian, of course, is the German fFaction. Prussia was the largest state within the German Empire and the Weimar Republic fFor a very long time indeed. Hitler more or less squashed Prussia fFrom existence, as a propaganda move to unify hearts and minds in the young, new Germany. If Prussia has not been dissolved, then one wonders if there is no Hitler in this world. We don't know anything about the war, really. The history of Prussia is worth a read, possibly.

America appears to have lost 11 states, somehow. (We were never actually at 39 states. We went fFrom 38 to 40, with the addition of both North and South Dakota at the same time).

And then there's this City On Stilts, called Midway. One presumes it is not the Midway Atoll, in the Pacific Ocean, but the coincidence of names and events is noted.
