[SPEC] The Operator: Protector? (I'm new here so anything I say is based on reading the wiki since there's no way I could get through the whole forum obviously)
One thing no one ever mentions (it seems) is that the Operator has NEVER been hostile. Menacing, yes, but in no situation has he been shown to physically harm anyone. Even when Jay attacked him and was clearly over matched, instead of physically hurting Jay, it "just" erased his memory. There has been ample opportunity for the Operator to hurt or kill people and it never has.
Some may say that it made Alex kill people, but we don't know that. For all we know, the Operator took the guy Alex killed in the tunnel and resurrected him somewhere out of danger and cleared his memory of the event. It would explain why there were no missing persons or death reports.
It could have done the same to Tim when Alex beat him in the hospital. Brian, Seth, Jessica, Sarah, and Amy could be fine and just not remember anything.
The operator could be there to protect people from Alex, who may be infected or possessed by something, which is why he showed up when Amy had the camera. Maybe she was fatally injured when she went out the window and he fixed her and she's now somewhere else with no memory of Alex.
He may not have the strength to remove whatever it is controlling Alex, but he may be able to temporarily overpower it to control Alex himself and keep them out of trouble.
Maybe he's just socially awkward.

This theory has been discussed a lot. But it really would ruin MH for me if he was the good guy. It's not a good twist to the story.
OOG:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I'm pretty sure Troseph have mentioned that they want to try and get The Operator to be more hostile this season.

Do you know where it was discussed? I'd love to read it but have no idea how to phrase such a search that would yield useful results.

The idea he didn't "get away" but was released after Slednerator had his way (like on those shows where they chase, tranq, tag and label, then release an animal) is very appealing as well. You think by now anytime there was a hint of paranormal they would start checking the time to make sure it's all accounted for.
You know what, it would be awesome if Jay appeared on camera next entry and there was mild distortion.

Merging "[SPEC] The Operator: Protector?" with "The Operator as a good guy?" and labelling the combined thread as [SPEC] for simplicity.
Do not take this as an indication to stop discussing the topic. However, I will say that all other signs point to this theory being false.

The operator as a drug / drug dealer? I know that it is not so literally, but it is a metaphor that occurs to me to see the reaction of the different characters to Slendy. In general all have psychosomatic symptoms vary slightly depending on the dose (exposure), but, while some try to protect others react fleeing or scared (Jay, Jessica) and Alex on the other hand, Alex is a fucking junkie! Alex needs his dose and he goes to look (at the park) or call their drug dealer (entry # 44 i.e.) If do not get it, then suffer withdrawal syndrome and is pissed, angry and pay it with others. .. Finally, the differences are in the knowledge of the facts and the acceptance.
More crap thoughts
Some have suggested the possibility that there were more than one operator, several. I've always called attention to a small detail: the tie. In some tapes seems entirely black, in others, however, appears red. I can not imagine the operator deciding what tie dress every morning, well, I can, but then, TO lose that point supernatural, would be more mundane. So there could be at least two operators? As the operator of Tim and Alex operator? Or the operator good and the bad operator?

Re: The operator as a drug / drug dealer? If I was a faceless freak I would change it up in every entry. Maybe a Hawaiian shirt one day, super deep V the next, then a sexy casual jacket.

I really don't think the Operator is a protector a good guy.
From what I can gather, he's neither on the side of ToTheArk or any of the people involved in Marble Hornets. In one of TTA's entries he says "You will lead me 'to the ark,'" which I assume means "safety," or a place far away from the Operator or out of reach of the tall man. Also, when Hoody and Masky attack Alex in that one entry, the Operator appears (albeit off camera) and Hoody and Masky freak and bail-- I highly doubt whoever/whatever TTA is, is in leagues with the Operator.

Hey, whatever happened to the "Ark is The Operator" theory?

Would make very little sense nowadays given that TO was right in front of both Maskies - or at least, this was strongly implied in #45...

It's possible the Operator is the ark and they just don't have the means to capture him or whatever they want to do. Which kinda goes with the "Jay is slightly immune" theory since they apparently need Jay to lead them to it. Just food for thought

I've always liked the idea that perhaps the Operator is a benevolent being, and he came here to try to do something good (prevent Alex from murdering people, for example). Unfortunately, eldritch abomination that he is, he's just too alien for our reality--this explains everything from his appearance to his effects on electronics to slendersickness and memory loss. His very presence just throws everything around him out of whack. Even more interesting is the possibility that the way things work around him is completely normal wherever he's from, so he can't even perceive the chaos he's creating or the damage he's doing.
That being said, I really don't think that it's the case in Marble Hornets. I'm pretty well convinced that at least in this corner of the Mythos, the Operator is a bad guy. I just like the idea of that version of the Operator--either a being trying to do some good, or perhaps a being with a childlike mentality that just wants to "play".

Still, the phrasing "lead me to the ark" has come up several times. They've been led to The Operator. I'd think a change of phrasing would be in order.
Same deal with "Where is the ark." Surely they know where to go to find him? The phrasing just doesn't match up with "Take me to The Operator."

Okay you make a good point with "Where is the ark". Overall I think Decay does show that whatever the ark is, totheark needs to find Alex to get it. Jay needs to lead totheark to Alex so that totheark can get to the ark. Maybe to get to the ark Alex needs to be dead too. Maybe the ark is a metaphor for freedom from the Operator, and Alex is the one sending the Operator to bother everyone. Maybe if they kill Alex the Operator will just leave them alone.
